One large map or a smaller map with multiple elevations?
(think lorner’s pass vs. verdant brink)

I would prefer somthing like Lorner’s Pass. I don’t like the different elevations, myself. My husband won’t even play HoT because he doesn’t like the jumping and gliding and all that stuff to get everywhere and he -hates- the jungle anyway so it was like two strikes against it.

Personally I like both style of maps. Map diversity is a good thing. I HATED HoT maps when I started the xpac. Enough to make me leave the game for around 8 months. But I’ve come back and a learned most of the maps and how they work and I enjoy them. Once you have the appropriate mastery for navigation it makes them much less frustrating.

I am changing my vote to map diversity. Reading the poster above me’s post made me think about it and I love things about LP as well. I do truly enjoy “more and varied” rather than “only maps like this”

I prefer the open style of the Tyria maps.

HoT maps are a convoluted, claustrophobic, cluttered mess, IMHO.

I love the HoT maps, but hopefully there’s room for both kinds of maps in the future.

I never even completed Verdant Brink and never saw one of the other HoT maps
and much prefer more flat maps like Frostgorge and Dreadgehaunt Cliffs.

But reading about all the gliding stuff in old and new maps now i guess its another
reason to never come back to this game.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

I actually prefer having a mix of:

  • A few massive maps (Maelstrom)
  • A few vertical maps (VB)
  • A lot of decent size maps.
  • A few tiny maps (Southsun)

If we’re limited to only one new map every [insert long period of time], I’d prefer to see them add one of each type, roughly in the above order.

I’d prefer a title more like “What Type of Map Would You Prefer?” so I would know at a glance what the thread is about.

Which for me is a map with lots of details, nooks, crannies, story, events silly and serious that weave a story, with some “safe” spots to stand and admire the view, preferably with some RP infrastructure in those spots. Large is nice, though Lornar’s becomes a chore to complete so maybe not quite that spread out. I like meta event chains but also want side-chains that tell the map’s tale or even just the tale of a few folks living there.

I like the variety we have. Even though I dislike TD the most, I still mapped it without writing it off like most people did. My only complaint about new maps is that there’s very little breathing room. I feel like I can’t look away from my screen at any time because a mob will spawn and gank me. Blood fly fen has been a big improvement. While I’m not a fan of the homing attacks, at least I have a reason to use glider 4. The high elevation of the map allows me to find a few safe spots where I can take a quick break as well.

I like Verdant Brink and Auric Basin as far as the map design is concerned but Tangled Depth I find too chaotic and Dragon Stand is just annoying to me. Also needing other people and high level masteries to complete maps is a turn off for me.

On the other hand, I do find the original maps/zones too big. I prefer them to be more compact also then.

All in all I would like multi level, compact maps where map completion is soloable for the average player and where the multi level stuff doesn’t get so confusing.

I will say that I probably would’ve liked Tangled Depths better if the there were a lot less mobs so I would actually be able to take the time to get my bearings instead of constantly running around not sure where I’m going. The mob density and agro ranges make it less enjoyable for me.

It’s a game forum. The truth is not to be found here.

A mix of both, and maybe some other types as well, like maps without the multiple levels HoT has but with lots of jumping/gliding, and makes with multiple levels but with clear paths between them (like the Grove).

Basically I just like exploring and a variety of map types is best for that. But I do find the HoT maps really fun to move through now I’ve gotten the hang of them.

I like compact, multi-level maps more. They’re so much faster and more fun to move through. Sure, exploration can be a pain – but once you know the map, getting from Point A to Point B isn’t as much of a chore.

I wish Central Tyria would get a mushroom infestation, though. I miss the Speed Boost, Adrenal, and Bouncing Mushrooms.

On the subject of map design, I started playing a salad to experience the unique dialogue and noticed the multi layers of the grove. I think this might have been an inspiration or theme ANET adopted while developing the heart of thorns maps. I hope every Xpac does something like this. Maybe not divinity’s reach though, honestly too neat for my taste.
