why do combo fields overwrite each other?
well except for the fact that it would be overwhelmingly OP, sure why not….
Imagine if 1 blast finisher gave you: 3 AOE stacks of might, AOE retaliation, AOE weakness, AOE Blind, and AOE 1.5k heal… all which could be stacked with multiple blasts in a row.
Everyone would just stack and spam blast finishers for victory.
Problem is likely due to WvW balance.
Imagine half of your zerg putting down combo fields (say 20 people).
The other half (20 people) are doing finishers.
So that would amount to 400 combo effects going off.
This game doesn’t need more lag.
That being said I would still like it. It would at least counteract the greifers in WvW. For example when a commander asks for a fire field and some other player puts a poison field over top of the fire field.
That would be too OP. The finisher should attach to the last field dropped. Then it becomes more a game of skill—don’t drop a field that cancels out an earlier one.
the whole overwriting mechanic is horrible though. if i have a combo that i like, for example poison field then blast finisher for AoE weakness on the mob, but someone else laid down a fire field what do I do? I have to wait for the fire field, and the water field to pass….when do I even get to do my combo???
it’s a ridiculous mechanic, basically denying people the people with lesser combo fields the chance to do anything to help the team for fear of overwriting the “better” fields.
No one uses combo fields in PvE anyway, so this doesnt matter. Only a rare few guilds have talked about it on forums and its mainly before a fight, to blast fire, which your out of combat for. If you cant control your teammates or coordinate 1 field while not fighting, you dont deserve the buff. In WvW it would be too strong. Thats why.

uh not really. every PuG I have joined used combo fields constantly.
I’d just be happy if YOUR OWN combo fields took precedence over those of others.
I run an ele and I have a might stacking combo I frequently start a fight with, and it is the biggest pain in groups because every time I lay down my fire fields and start my burst finisher combo some chuckle head lays another field over it and denies me the might stacks that are absolutely essential for my build!
It is a pain to have your intended field canceled by a later “wrong” field, even though the later field may have been dropped with good intentions. Maybe blasts should divide between laid down fields. So rather than a blast ramping two or three fields equally they get divided between the fields. If two fields are down then each gets 50% of the blast and so on.
Yeah, on the one hand it sucks when your combo field gets over ridden.
On the other hand, it is just about the only thing in the game that requires teamwork/coordination.

well the thing is that other people want to do their combos too….
noone likes waiting for everyone else to do their combos but they don’t get to do anything.

I totally agree with this. Especially in WvW. A skilled team or guild can lay down fields and finishers amazingly fast. It gives them a tremendous advantage.

Well then his fields can combo for him (and whoever else that doesn’t have their own field down, because he laid his second) and mine will still combo for me, and everybody wins. Then the only hurdle to overcome would be the situations where you want somebody else’s combo field to overwrite yours.

Haha. Same thing. The worse part is, my might combo always conflicts with time warp if there is a mesmer in the group. Which sucks because i need my 25 stacks of might to totally benefit from time warp, but i always end up with 15 seconds of chaos armor instead.

Used on purpose to gain tactical advantages and randomly spam skills and use them by nature of using a random skill is not the same

Yeah, in WvW, knowing when to do the right combos is a real game changer. And if someone effs up and drops a smoke field over your water field in the zerg, that would also be a game changer…except you all die.
So, it’s nice that succeeding/not succeeding in combat can actually be contingent on using/not using the right fields.

used on purpose to finish their own combos to gain tactical advantages i’d guess.
this is a serious issue, please revamp the combo field system ANET, it’s not working correctly right now.
It’s not a serious issue. Hell, it’s not even an issue; it’s an opinion.
this is a serious issue, please revamp the combo field system ANET, it’s not working correctly right now.
The biggest issue is people putting down the wrong combo fields at the wrong times…not the way fields work.
I was lucky enough to choose an ele for my first class, which is basically combo fields/finishers 101. If more people were educated on which fields to prioritize, it would be much less of an issue.
Like i said before, it sucks you don’t get what you want 100% of the time, but it is a good thing you need to interact with others for optimal play. Otherwise it might as well be a single player game.

You wanting it to work differently doesn’t mean it’s not working correctly.

It allows any teammate to stop other teammates from taking full advantage of their build, that’s a problem, and an ‘issue’. If you don’t think so, you must not be much of a team player, and that is your issue.

how does it make sense to not be able to perform your own combos out of fear of overwriting another person’s combo?
at the very least, take out the whole overwriting because it just makes no sense and just let people finish their own combos without jeopardizing other people’s combos.
In soviet russia, combo field zergs you!
Own combo fields given preference over combo fields from others … sounds good actually, but I guess it would stress the system too much.
“Whose Charr is this?”- “Ted’s.”
“Who’s Ted?”- “Ted’s dead, baby. Ted’s dead.”

It’s called communication.
“Hey mesmer, at the beginning of the fight i’m going to stack 25 mights. After that, use your time warp”
See, now your fields wont overlap. Engaging in teamwork is a win/win and turns your issue into a non-issue.

I can imagine resource wise – server, it would just have to keep track of one more thing.

So it barely works with 2 people in the team. Now add 3 more and the system is completely screwed.
At the end of the day, having to wait for everyone else to finish their combos just so you can use your own is a PITA and is just not fun.

This is true, but 90% of the time it’s pretty straight forward.
Shadow refuge is crucial for me sometimes but i’m not going to drop it over a water field.
If the wvw zerg is about to move out, they will most definitely benefit from swiftness, but wait until everyone has blasted the static fields before you drop Symbol of swiftness or else everyone just gets retaliation.

It’s also a predictable mechanic that any coordinated group can properly utilize. If you can’t, then you need to L2P, and that is your issue.
Has everyone forgotten that you can just, you know, NOT overlap your combo fields? If you care so much about your precious combos, communicate with your teammates. That chat window isn’t there just to look pretty, and you’re not entirely incapable of voice communication either.

… you blast the poison field for weakness. Finishers proc from the oldest field.

Predictable how? Most combo fields happen as a secondary affect of abilities which do vastly different things and have many different potential applications, people naturally use those skills in the situations wherein they apply. No amount of ‘communication’ is going to get a person to play contrary to common sense or the games very design. When an ability is up, and the situation calls for its use, no sensible person would expect that the wielder hold off while they double check if four (or more) people are ready for them to use it, especially in as fast paced a game as GW2.
The system is flawed, stop making lame and ill-considered excuses and try doing something constructive, like trying to get it fixed.

Sounds more like your way of thinking is flawed, your trying to treat this as a rotation based combat system (Like WoW) when its clearly ment to be a situationl based combat system.

Everyone seems not to understand that this is true. The finisher will trigger on the oldest initiator; a blast finisher will give Might instead of Healing if a water field overlaps an existing fire field. (the last sentence in the paragraph at the top that starts with “The combo finisher…”)
Go ahead and try it yourself with a friend who has some fields and finishers.

Wow … 35 replies and only 2 of them knew that combo fields do not overwrite each other …
And yes, I’ve tested it myself. Two feedbacks at the same target. The later one gets the reflects credited, the first gets the combo field credited.
But at least anyone get his complain out
It’s still the same thing in the end. If you lay down one field, then noone else can do their combo because the finisher will use the oldest field.
The mechanic really needs to be changed for more cooperation among team members instead of first come first served system it’s using right now.

Lol … didn’t you complain that “last used priorizes” is a bad strategy ?
Now you say “first used priorizes” is a bad one. What else will there be ? “second used priorized” ? so much better.
And saying “your finisher priorizes your own field” is pretty much “anti-teamwork”.
Please, suggest a coherent way, as you think it’s a good way. And please to not say “better let us overwrite bad fields”.

The only solution is to make finishers activate all combo fields present in that spot. The current first come first serve setup just makes it so whoever plops down the first combo field gets to do his combos and then noone else can until the combo field is over. That’s just not fun for anyone and could hurt the team if the currently in place field isn’t what other people want.
