why is there a cooldown on weapon swap?
im so cooldown. there has to be a way.
I’m not sure what you are talking about. when you swap weapons the new weapon skills are NOT on CD, which is why the swap itself has a CD, to prevent spamming super short CD moves between weapon sets.
^that post didn’t make much sense. higher cd skills might be on cd when you swap. what makes low cd skills special in that their spamming has to be prevented? atm you are incentivized to rotate your skills and swap asap to access low cd skills
There are sigils that trigger all kinds of cool stuff when you swap weapons.

with internal cooldowns.
maybe its there for spvp. So you can see an enemy swapping to a specific weapon, and play around it knowing he’ll be stuck with that skillset for 8 seconds…
other than that, no idea
Roll a warrior, spec 20 in discipline, and enjoy 5 second weapon swap cooldowns.

To annoy everyone…no other reason…

Don’t forget to add runes of the warrior for an additional -1 second.

devs? what is the point of this with individual skills having cooldowns? it just locks me into rotations and encourages spamming.. maybe something friendlier – 4 seconds – I could understand
If there wasn’t weapon swap cooldown, they could have just gave you 10 weapon skills on a 15 slots long skillbar. You are supposed to swap weapons both strategically and tactically, but you are not supposed to swap spam.
Also remember, that the ele equivalent is the attunement swap. Do you really want eles to be able to swap attunements without any significant cooldown?
Remember, remember, 15th of November

There is no cooldown outside of combat.
There is a cooldown in combat to prevent repeatedly getting the benefits of “On weapon swap” weapon upgrades.

no. eles are fine. mostly because they have 4 attunements. also engis have no cooldown on their kits.

if so, this is a major oversight, because all of those sigils have internal cooldowns so this is unnecessary.

This is the only logical statement in this thread, I’m honestly baffled by what I’ve read.
Of course weapon swapping needs a cooldown – saying weapon swapping shouldn’t have cooldowns is like saying no skill should have cooldowns, or that you should be able to dual wield a greatsword or some other sort of absurd equivalent ideas.
Cooldown on weapon swap exists for balancing, limiting your spamming ability – not encouraging it and so on.

what the kitten can’t you spam now that you could spam with no swap cd? lol @ saying that this is equivalent to no skill cooldowns
I think it is more to prevent any crazy ‘back to back’ skill uses. Since I only play Ranger, my example would be applying poison with shortbow, insta-switching over to torch to start a burn, then coming back to shortbow to do other condition work.
There are probably far better ‘OP combination’ examples of why swap cooldowns exist, however you get the general idea. That is, there are most likely a lot of balance issues solved by having it there.
Cooldowns on weapon swaps make me happy that I main an Engineer. Then I realize I’m an Engineer and I’m back at square one.
Same reason you can only dodge twice but swing a giant two handed sword and swing a giant two handed sword again. You have ultra arm muscles in the GW2 world but geriatric leg muscles

“probably” and “most likely” doesn’t cut it when it comes to balance

It’s only probably on our end. Devs have actual reasons for making it that way.

At this point in time, i’m not convinced ANet knows what those words mean.

O RLY
Because it takes 10 seconds for someone to think about swapping a weapon back – serious brain power right there
Because anet hates you.

wow that sounds almost fun, we could use more of this
I think weapon swap cooldown makes a lot of sense, it creates a limitaion for people, to either remain in their current weapon set if they want to use the weapon skill immediately after cooldown or to swap to use another weapon and wait 10s to go back.. If they remove the weapon swap cooldown, I think they will have to modify the current cooldown of the individual weapon skills to account for that.
For example on my warrior with fast hands trait, I think it is quite overpowered for me to be able to use all my burst skills on my greatsword(hundred blades+third skill) then swap to the axe for the best autoattack skill for warrior every 5 seconds. Imagine if u can do that on every class -_-. The greatsword autoattack is weaker as compared to axe to compensate for the fact that gs weapon skill 2-5 are more damaging than axe weapon skill 2-5, hence u are supposed to be stuck with a weaker autoattack by choosing to swap to gs for 100 blades. But fast hands circumvent this limitation, and hence allowing my warrior to use the best of both weapons.
Hence if weapon swap cooldown was removed, we will have to most probably autoattack most of the time or have our individual weapon skills nerfed to account for that matter.

Theyre not going to remove it no matter how much you complain, if you cant see the kitten that would happen if they removed weapon cooldowns then you must be playing 1 class.
I’d wager it’s to make it somewhat consequential to weaponswap.
“Do I really swap to other weaponset now knowing I have a free stun on this just in case it doesn’t play out…Do I take that hit?”
Not saying it’s perfect, just that along those lines are most likely. Sigils and traits mostly now have hidden cooldowns, so that doesn’t seem like the reason.

bad weapon balance. you can’t fall back to that when making decisions about things like this.

I wouldnt call that bad weapon balance. The weapons are rather balanced if u use a 10s weapon swap cooldown. They only become inbalanced if u remove weapon swap cooldown. And for warrior they need to take a 15 point minor trait to reduce weapon swap to 5s cooldown which is pretty closed to overpowered for a axe/mace+ gs combo.
As I said, if they were to remove weapon swap cooldown, most weapon skills have to be rebalanced to make them weaker or increased cooldown. Given a choice between the 2, one being a nerf to weapon skills due to weapon swap cooldown removal, the other being the current system, I prefer the current system.

Welcome to ele life, nerfed skills and weak autoattack.
So OP, what’s your beef against cd on weapon swap? BTW, how does it encourage spamming?
