Q:

Question: do you think that this year, it will finally be possble to actually join up with friends, to see whose faster in finishing the jumping puzzle, or play together in a snowball mayhem?

and tbh, i think most of the yearly events are rather dull, will there ever be a moment where you guys decide to revamp the whole thing?

Premade teams for Winter Wonderland…

Yeah! Lets steamroll those filthy casual PvE loving Carebears in /everything!/

Obvious sarcasm aside… Like Vayne said, I doubt it will change.

You could do so with the Mad Clock Tower , maybe you could do the same with this, although it affects nothing.

They’ve never even hinted that they were considering that.

or play together in a snowball mayhem?

They said a month or two ago that this won’t happen this year.

I don’t see why they would. Lots of people really like Wintersday and festivals are designed as “comfort food” — predictable content that returns each year at the same time.

That leaves other ANet resources free to work on new stuff, such as Living World, new/updated fractals, and even take the occasional break from the “all hands on deck” required after major updates.

Here’s the most recent quote we have about this. For those who don’t want to read the full text, the short version is:

In 2014, the team chose to include Toypacalypse without grouping, as opposed to dropping it from the festival. To allow groups requires substantially revamping the instance; it’s not a simple change.

Hey guys. We wanted to let you know that unfortunately, changes to grouping in Toypocalypse won’t be possible right now. We spent time investigating ways this could be changed, and we are still investigating options that we hope will remedy this in a future Wintersday festival.

This is the reason previously given as to why Tix and Toypocalypse don’t have parties.

After the 2013 Toypocalypse there were changes to the game that broke the underlying functionality for Toypocalypse. For 2014 the team was trying to fix the bug (and really, they went up past the absolute last second to try and fix it) but ultimately had to decide between the activity working or being cut – it was that unplayable. It wasn’t a lightly made decision, especially since it had worked the year before and players liked it.

The team would still like to fix it but it isn’t a simple switch or anything. Reverting the change would break significant other parts of the game.

Soo…. I would rather queue with friends too, but I’d also like to be able to do the activity. It’s a rough tossup.

I just heard from the team about this, and it is an unfortunate but intended change. The alteration came about because code changes were required in order to stabilize PvP and some Instance Activities. According to one of our lead designers, the change cannot be revisited for this year’s release. Thanks for your understanding concerning this necessary adjustment.

Bottom line: This was not a “choice.” This was not a decision made without thought, or carelessly, or in error. This was a necessary change that stabilized the game, for both PvP and Activities.
We understand that you would have preferred that this change not be made, but the cost of not making this change was too significant to let it slide. The change was necessary and as much as we regret any dissatisfaction that you may feel in relation to it, according to the designers it must remain in this state for this year’s release.

(Thanks to Just a flesh wound for doing the research.)

I get that it’s a matter of developer time and priorities. I get that they are working kind of bare-bones right now and thus we get things like legendaries without the collections. I get it, and I’d rather have Toypocalypse as is than not, I’d rather have legendaries as is than not, but it still makes me sad for the game. The creativity and vision is, I think, exceptional, but they can’t implement their ideas effectively.

Ugh, I understand the limitations thing, but if they’re never going to do it while the game keeps changing I can’t imagine things getting anything but worse. It’s kinda like that stuff you sweep under the carpet. And as of late the holiday events have been increasingly underwhelming.

And it does make me sad, because the first thing to really get me into Gw2 was Wintersday because it was really something special and I’ve looked forward to it every year.

Pick something that they are known to be working on that you’d give up (or accept a lesser version) for a complete mechanics change to a single festival activity.

That’s a rhetorical suggestion; don’t feel compelled to answer it. My intent is to give perspective on the choices the devs must make about stuff like this.

I, too, would love to see a new activity every Festival, with ANet keeping the ones that people like best. I would love to see them spruce up the existing activities, too.

At the same time, I also want to see new open world stories & content more frequently than we have now.

If I have to choose, I’d prefer the open world rather than the short-term festivals.

Eventually things will have to be fixed if they keep breaking things. Look at Halloween and how this last year had the least content of any year. I think there is a difference between creating new events and some basic game maintenance. And yes, I would endure a content drought in order for them to get around to some maintenance and QoL changes. Like I said, this game is very ambitious and I understand that their vision cannot keep up with their implementation. I still see people complaining about broken events, broken code that reduces existing content, QoL changes that have to be done as a side project (like material storage), new content being buggy (grawl heatstones), etc. At what point to they keep pushing to create new content when there is a lot of existing content that needs to be looked at?

I’ve recommended this game to friends with the following qualifier – it’s a beautiful and interesting game, but there are a lot of areas where it’s not polished. If you don’t mind small annoyances, then this game is worth playing. Does that sound like a good recommendation? I do love this game and plan to play it for the forseeable future, but I can’t give it an unqualified thumbs up when asked about it.
