I gave up on it, for now. P: If it comes back next year, I’ll make another attempt. I hardly have patience however, so once I notice I’m starting to get frustrated I stop and go do something else. I might make it one day, I might never. Either way, I’m having fun when trying it.
No use in getting frustrated over a game that I play to have fun ^^

Finished it within my first 3 attempts. Just try it once more, take your time there is no need to rush it. Make safe jumps and by now you should know the path.

The clocktower is the only thing I’m missing, but sadly I don’t think I will get it this year. I tried it for about a half an hour this morning, but the jumping puzzles are simply beyond my skills at this point I guess. Either I run off an edge, get stuck and the green goo swallows me up, or I hit space and my character doesn’t jump (which results in one of the first 2). Hopefully they will bring it back next year and I can try again for it then (cries really don’t want to wait that long to finish that achievement section! ah well)

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

I did, it’s just not for me. I don’t think and move that fast.

I think it’s pretty awesome, however, and applaud the people that could do it!

I’m ‘very’ thankful that something that challenging (from a dexterity-push-go-faster perspective) wasn’t part of the meta-achievement, but I think anyone that completed it should have gotten a title for doing so, like the pumpkin carving (which wasn’t part of the meta but granted a title).

Gave up after probably 10 total hours over a few days.

Mostly frustrated that keyboard-strafing makes the player slower when they walk sideways; I can’t turn smoothly//accurately enough with the mouse and I can’t turn fast enough with keyboard turning.

This game really needs analog-stick gamepad support.

Yep, I don’t really care. Tried it maybe 15 times. It seems based on having a very detailed memory and not losing it under pressure.

If it was solo I would beat it in 3 tries probably, but doing it with no visibility of my character is just not my thing.

Tried for about an hour and got no farther than about 25% of the way (or so a friend told me when I explained how far I got). I just suck at jumping. I’m not happy that there are things I literally cannot do in the game, but I suppose I’ll just have to accept it. At least my girlfriend is awesome.

I spent so long on this Clock Tower, it sickens me. I was determined to get it, but yesterday I made a realization. I suck. I cannot complete that puzzle. I never made it past 25%, and I probably never will. And you know what? I’m okay with that. I’ve made my peace with it. I can complete every other puzzle in this game, but the Clock Tower will always evade me.

Besides, the light armor exotic slippers look exactly like the exotics I’m already wearing. :P

Yeah, I gave up on it.

Too crowded every time I tried it, I’d always wind up having to jump blind and hope. Needless to say, that didn’t work very well for me.

I finally realized that I’ve got other things I’d like to do with my game time. I’d love it if this stuck around so I could give it the occasional try with fewer people, and beat it on my own timetable. Pounding away at it in a stressed rush to beat it before it’s gone, however, is something I’ll pass on.

I gave up, but not because it’s difficult.

Every time I try I get this weird bug where everyones characters are stuck in place on the roof of the building, then dropped into water several times before I find myself back in the lobby. I’ve only managed to even attempt it a couple of times. Which is a shame because I love the jumping puzzles so this was the one thing I was really excited about.

Gave up after 3 tries, realize that this CT is never my game.

I also hate the time limit. I want to start my challenge at my comfortable timing, take a few minutes rest after I failed a few times, then retry. Currently I feel like being pushed down from a bangee jump. If you jump at your own timing, it is fine, but if someone push you down, it is worst.

I think it should be divided into a few stages, even with a little bit more components, but would let you finish one by one, and take your time to rest between the stages. Also let you start from 2nd stage if you have finished stage 1. Then it will be worth challenging for many more.

I tried for 20 or 30 minutes and decided it wasn’t fun. According to the designer it was designed to have 95% failure rate. Apparently he didn’t make it hard enough. I don’t particularly enjoy this brand of console game so I don’t play them.

That said some people do enjoy them and good for them. I think it should have been shoved off somewhere in the corner of the world where people who want to prove how ‘leet they are can go do so. I don’t think an event designed for mass failure should have been a central feature of the Halloween experience.

For the condescending people claiming that people that didn’t find it fun should try one more time. Try and understand that I did not find it fun, if I ever did succeed I would not feel accomplishment I would feel stupid for having wasted that much time on something I didn’t enjoy.

Notice that I’m not calling for it to be nerfed, removed or anything else. At most I suggest it be shoved off into a corner like it deserves.

I am also a keyboard turner. I can do the other jumping puzzles, but this one is a no go.
I simply get too stressed when I cannot have my fraction of a moment to fine tune my jump. Only once did I even make it to the beams, the rest failed shortly after the pause.
Not my cup of tea. And, I am somewhat bummed that this is an achievement I will never get. Oh well, c’est la vie.

from what i hear on the forums most of people’s problems with this challenge isn’t that it’s a jumping challenge, its that there are far too many people in the challenge with them. And i can see why. Jumping challenges are just like most puzzles, once you learn the cycle its easy to know what to do on the repeat.

The biggest difficulty for this challenge however is the large numbers of characters in there with you. This brings out several obstacles such as lag, issues surrounding the characters size, other people fooling around to put you off, and makes it extremely difficult to see where your character is half the time, let alone where you are jumping to.

For the next jumping challenge i would like to see changes to help overcome this. Every other aspect of the game (dungeons, story mode) you can enter the instance solo. So why not do that with this instance? Give the person the chance to decide whether they would rather enter it in a party or by themselves. If that’s too much then why not limit the instance to say 6 people like dungeons. This would help too. Or failing that… this instance really you only got the achievement and exotics for the first completion of the challenge. So why not just make it so you can only complete it once. Give everyone else a chance

I find the tone of this post very passive-aggressive… but looking past that and at the content of your post, they did exactly what you wanted. The tower IS shoved off into some corner. Nobody even gets there without going to the labyrinth first and then asking an npc for a port to the tower.

i gave up because there are parts that things like bricks or fences block my camera viewing angle so that my camera was instantly drew into some texture, and i have to re-adjust my camera angle to see my next step. very annoying. same thing happens during normal plays too, there are times when some tiny tree branches block my viewing angle, forcing my camera to draw back and forth at a five hertz frequency. thats a headache-maker for me btw, when concentrated on fighting.

I think it is unfortunate that they design an event that puts you at a disadvantage based on choices you made during character creation.

Arenanet is showing its bias and bigotry against large characters, by putting in an event which results in large characters, (Norn and Char) becoming the targets of derision and scorn because the environment of the jumping puzzle puts them at a disadvantage and obscures the puzzle for others.

I am still waiting for the schill to come out claiming to be a max size Norn who aced the puzzle first try, right.

A good game designer would not design a dungeon that required you to be a certain height to shoot over an obstacle, but Arenanet seems to have no compunction telling Norn and Char tough luck when it comes to tight spaces and jumping puzzles. New players ought to be warned that the camera completely bugs out in tight spaces for large characters, and the large character models completely obscure the path in jumping puzzles.

As long as jumping puzzles are optional, that’s fine, but requiring one as they did with the Mad King fight crosses the line. If they are going to require jumping puzzles to complete regular content, then they should fix things so all players have an equal chance.

Tried 4 or 5 times, then said “nope, I’m’a farm some more candy corns.” Been happy since.

When I made this map I was HOPING that people who aren’t into jumping would do exactly this. They’d see a fun Halloween looking environment, maybe get to the first chest and snag a goodie, then be on their merry way. I see now it was a mistake to make the hardest jumping challenge in the game part of an in-your-face update like a holiday event. I’m not going to stop making difficult stuff like this, they just won’t be so prominent in the future. I honestly hate making people upset and have a very high level of empathy. So it’s been hard hearing all the people that are so angry, frustrated and sad because of something I’ve made. But it’s just another lesson learned.

I am a norn and still have trouble with it. I have been trying since it was added. Primarily my problem is I am too reactive to others around me and they tend to mess me up. The tower is really fun, I just wish I could do it solo. Farthest I got was once to the leap of faith, but I was apparently slow, and landed in the goo. since then I had variable success but never the lap of faith, usually some cog, or 20-30 attempts at the beginning with some progress on one, then back to the beginning issues.

Would be much nicer if it was solo, I might be able to finish it.

I gave up after failing to get into the clockface 5 times. I read that there is a bug related to this, and that I’d have to change ‘rooms’. The thing is, every time I changed, the latency seemed to have changed, sometimes I got back into that annoying ‘stuck in the cutscene’ problem and died instantly before I could move. I endured this for about 10 runs on the first day it was available. On the second day I made it to the clockface over 10 times but was never able to get in, no matter how I changed my timing.

Heres some feedback for you Josh. IMO, the clocktower is very fun, but it is marred by technical issues that made me give up and hope by the time we can try it again next year (fingers crossed we can still do it next year) it’d be ironed out by then.

Oh, don’t fret too much! My frustration came from my own shortcomings. I spent many hours trying to complete your puzzle, and just as much time swearing up a storm, but I had fun doing it. I love the puzzle and I love seeing other people complete it. It looks fabulous, and I know if I had more time I could eventually reach the top. Like you said, it probably wasn’t the greatest idea to throw it into the Halloween event, but you can’t learn if you don’t make mistakes. ^^

Gave up as well. Not proud that I did. My biggest concerns of this puzzle were:

  • Other people obscuring your own player.
  • The wait in between attempts.
  • Small fragments that “snag” your character (also very obscured at times).

Honestly otherwise it was fine. Good fast pace and some unforgiving segments. Would like to see more hard stuff, even though I feel like punching the wall as I do it

Thanks Josh – this is exactly what I hoped you’d take away from this. The Clocktower is awesome content, and if you’re going to do more jumping puzzles I’d like more in this style. But this level of difficulty needs to come with time to explore it; trying to beat it under the time-pressure of a seasonal event was just really stressful.

Bring back the Clocktower as an all-year-round zone, or more like it. But make the seasonal instances something casual that everyone can enjoy.

Also I didn’t mention it explicitly elsewhere because the difficulty was the big issue, but the concept of the map was really great and inventive, particularly the clock-face finale.

I hated and didn’t do jumping puzzles before this, but it being seasonal, I felt obligated.

I rejoined until I got one without charr or big ol’ norn. Me and a bunch of the others formed a sort of support group and became quite good pals, all rooting each other on and giving advice at certain parts. Ended up being a couple of hours to finish that I didn’t really mind spending. A fine evening all told.

Please don’t feel bad. You created an awesome level. I just spent the last two hours attempting it and only ever made as far as the leap of faith part. I was frustrated as hell, but I felt good about getting farther and farther every time. At one point I found myself not really paying attention because I had memorized it. That was pretty cool and kinda zen. So, it’s not for everybody, so what? People are going to talk about this puzzle forever and I think that is wicked cool.

Also, everyone I was running it with were having a really fun time in chat. That’s got to count for something too.

My goodness. What a warm and compassionate response. I’m genuinely impressed, Mr. Foreman. And I empathize powerfully with how much you’ve personally invested in designing this jumping challenge.

If my opinion counts for anything, I really thought it was a remarkably challenging and punishing puzzle, sadistic in a good way that was entirely in keeping with the holiday theme. In fact it reminded me a great deal of Bit.Trip.Runner, in that it is a jumping puzzle that sort of teaches you by punishing you. The puzzle features a number of “false positives,” and part of the trick to beating the jumping puzzle is understanding which paths are viable and which ones just trap you.

To that end I honestly believe it was a polished and devious jumping puzzle, and definitely the most challenging in the game. You shouldn’t beat yourself up too much over this—because while I can’t comment on the release of the puzzle in tandem with a big event like Halloween (that’s really more of an argument for the marketing department, isn’t it?) I honestly believe the puzzle itself is a brilliant piece of work.

Gosh, I was just so pleasantly surprised by your response that I just had to offer my 0.02

So it’s been hard hearing all the people that are so angry, frustrated and sad because of something I’ve made. But it’s just another lesson learned.

As someone who is not hardcore at jumping puzzles, I was left with the taste that I was not good enough to enjoy 100% the content this halloween had to offer. The tower is the best puzzle I’ve seen so far in this game, when it came to aesthetics and design, and I really wanted to complete it to make the entire halloween event even more satisfying. It was possibly my favourite part of the event. But I was left disappointed that my favourite content was not targetted to the type of player that I am. I feel a bit empty that something I expected to be part of my sweet memories in a few months/ years actually had to be ignored, because I simply don’t have the dedication for extremely hard jumping platforms.

It might be harsh to hear, and I do think the tower was genius at everything else, but I agree that this kind of very difficult content should be left to optional, hardcore stuff, and not to an event where everyone want to join in and have fun with the community. (That being said, I don’t think it should have been “easy” neither, the difficulty is part of the fun, I just found it too much for me).

Sorry for sounding so negative!

Post here if you GAVE UP on the Clocktower!

No! and I want to repeat this loud and clear DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING YOU ARE DOING. I loved the challenge and just the reward of beating it for the first time was an awesome feeling. Killing the Mad King was by far the best thing this Halloween, I have waited 7 years to do this, but my second favorite thing about this event was indeed that clock tower!
