I find it strange that after spending nearly 4 hours on an organized SW map NO ONE looted a portal, and now I come to the forums and I do not see anyone posting that they got one? Whats up with that?

Saw soemone link one earlier this morning, said they got it at the final part of the VW event.

Few people on reddit posted a pic with it. Other than that i dindt seen anyone dropping one either. Instead i just dropped my 95 carapace coat box..go figure

You are assuming that everyone would shout in map chat about getting a portal, that is highly unlikely.

There have been multiple report of drops on reddit, as soon as 1,5 hours after the update went live.

Looks like it drops only from event chests. In 4 hours i saw only 1 drop.

My friend got it after… 5 minutes? I’ve been playing for 3 hours and nothing… Stupid RNG!

I’m not going to try very hard to get one. RNGeesus rarely smiles on me. There was the one time I got a Spark, but I’m pretty sure he meant to give it to someone else in my party.

I still would like to know if they can drop from event mobs that has no loot (base defense, VW)

If you get anything worth more than 10G in this game from a drop, you have most assuredly been blessed by RNGesus. You found a precursor. There are numerous people who have been playing since launch that have never found anything of much valuable.

What would be the point of making the portals common enough that 100 people would get more than 1 during an hour of playtime?

I just looted mine about 30 mins ago from a random Devourer in Silverwastes. Guess RNGesus decided to smile upon me today

Those are called OPEN betas.

I was in Silverwastes for around three hours from 0% to full, through four Vinewraths. I didn’t get any, but I did see someone link the portal once. They got it as a drop from a chest during Vinewrath.

A few minutes ago some one in dry top linked the portal in chat and said, he got it from a event bonus chest.

So, they are dropping. But not so often as a lot of people hoped.

Figured they’d be kind of rare. It’s a novel idea for beta access though, despite the usual RNG madness.

Judging that most people probably hoped they drop enough that they will get one on the first attempt (as first play period trying, not first enemy killed), I’d say that was an inevitable let down for them.

Anet did say it was a rare drop. Combine rare (ANet’s definition of rare) with something that will last a week or more to get the number of people they want and that means it won’t drop often. If it dropped frequently then they would get more people than they want invited during the week’s time.

6 1/2 hours of running nonstop in silverwastes, nothing, 1 person early today got it but no one on our map since then. Can not waste any more time trying to secure a spot as much as I wanted one.

They won’t buff the drop rate. They only have room for so many players. Increasing the drop rate will only cause that number to fill up faster, and thus not giving as many players a chance to get the portal.

They said they were leaving them in for drops for a WEEK so that there is enough people to fill a server… So yeah… the drop is probably around the precursor drop rate.

i guess arena net like 4 people in beta only :P ,but seriously joke aside the drop is ridiculous low

Anet said that you’d have a rare chance to get them. Rare does not mean guaranteed to drop for everyone in the first few hours of an event that spans a week’s time.

When you approach RNG with the mindset that you’re entitled to a certain drop, the only thing you’re guaranteed to get is disappointment. I suggest just thinking about the normal chest loot from SW farming. That way, should you get a portal drop, it’ll feel so much better as a surprise.

I’m not going to spend a week of my playtime in two zones out of the several available. I have more fun things to do than grind the same zone and same enemies over and over. I like variety and still have map completions to do. So I will not be ‘trying’ to get into the closed beta. Hope Anet gets good feedback from the 1% of their playerbase that only plays in Dry Top and Silverwastes.

Well, they did reference Dry Top and the Silverwastes pretty specifically in a HoT news article a while back (see link below). So I guess it makes sense the beta thing drops in those zones.

I’ve been doing Silverwaste for 10 hours and haven’t gotten one.

i got lucky, after 3 hours of farming in SW I got a portal from the reward for defeating the vinewrath (happened at 3pm EST). Could not believe my luck, since normally I don’t see much of anything when I try to get something.

I ran a few VW’s start to finish, got nothing. Knowing how crappy my RNGness is I’m not to going waste too much of my time for a closed-beta. We still have open beta and eventually launch to experience HoT.

I got one in Dry Top.

Didn’t get one in 2 hours. But I randomly met a truly random and awesome guild. They are EVERYTHING I wanted from a guild.

Thanks Arenanet for randomly making me meet an awesome random guild! No portals, but now I’m ready for FUN ! :P

And they even passed by Arenanet building once or twice at random, though didn’t manage to get in. They kept talking about a certain Ruby that’s awesome.

UPDATE: It just dropped for me! After 7 straight hours of nonstop farming. I don’t really farm, like, ever, just this time I really wanted to get into the beta, it seems my persistence paid off. I was doing all events and killing every mob on sight. It dropped from a skritt during an event in the Dry Top map. My magic find was 155% or so at the time of the drop.

The second is worthless, they are account bound and a second nets you nothing the first didn’t.

Wow this is soul crushing. about 14 hours spent today trying to get something… Still nothing.

Maybe they should have made it a 48 hour event and increased the drop rate. A week is a long time to farm something with a low drop rate.

Well, I have tried to get the portal. 3 times silverwaste from 0% to finished meta → no portal. Don’t think I’ll continue farming.

I am sure people with work and such would love to only have a couple of hours to farm for it.
When it is a week at least you can spend a few hours every day.

Nice carrot on stick anet. They probably notice number of online players drop so they made “special beta drop event” just to encourage people to return…Sorry i will not waist time for that grind rng shi*.

I actually agree with this….it’s pretty obvious the player base may have dropped in wait for HoT……

I played for a good chunk of hours yesterday and got one exotic. The was the height of my ring experience seeing how I only get an exotic like every other month. I knew I wasn’t gonna get the portal haha

This is interesting to know, though. I was wondering if it was possible to get more than one.

Pretty sure there is a seed value with these, which makes me go meh.

Got 1 today. Got it from 143. chest for doing events – only 3-4h of farming at sw

21 hours already.. over 250 bags of gear, 180+ seed punches, over 300 events done. No portal, gg wp
