So, a low drop rate was a bug?

Wouldn’t surprise me. A decent drop rate generates a buzz and picks up active players. A very low drop rate generates frustration and dispels player confidence.

Not seeing any new reports of it dropping. Seems like a miniscule boost. Not wasting any more time on these shenanigans.

One of my guild members got it from the dust mite champions bonus chest in Dry Top sandstorm event.

RNG is RNG. I mean really what were you guys expecting. I also spent some time farming and didn’t get it, but doesn’t bother me much since I got a bunch of other stuff.

Well, the increased drop rate did the trick. Logged in this morning and got it from a Salamander Drake in the Silverwastes within 15 minutes of play . Dunno if MF did anything to help but boosted it to 466%.

Maybe I was just lucky, but that seems encouraging. Good luck, happy farming !

I have a question for anybody that got a Beta drop.

What class were you playing when it dropped?

I feel like this event is a major failure.
I love the idea of being able to get a portal to get into the beta.
But the rarity of the drop has me feeling like why should I even try?
I did not expect it to be super common, but I feel like it should has a rate like the carapace coat or boot boxes in SW. Not crazy common, but not so very rare as to make you feel crazy about not getting them.
With the drop rate what it is I lack motivation to even try and feel almost cheated. Sure I could try and farm for hours, but I have a RL job and and stuff. No one in my guild has gotten one and it sounds like the drop rate is crazy low, like getting an ascended item or less.
While a good idea I feel like it is a failure in implementation because of the rarity of the drops.

Agree. Five hours and numerous VW completes and nothing. Clever way for Anet to reinvigorate a stalled player base.

Yes, computers do not simulate a truly randon number generator.
But no, a correctly generated RNG is not distinguishable from true RNG in application. This has been proved over and over for computing purposes for years, if not decades.

Drop rate is really dependant on how many people they want in their beta. And it’s hard for us to know how many portal dropped so far.

For example : if they currently have 5 megaservers opened for the zone, and that 2 portals drop every hours in every megaserver, it means that :

- 10 portals are dropped every hours
- 240 portals drop every day
- 1600 portals drop in a week

These numbers are hypothetical of course. Only ArenaNet know the real numbers. Its only to show that even a very low droprate to our eyes may mean that ArenaNet will still meet their required number of testers they want to have, if for example, they want to have 1000 to 1500 testers this time. I doubt ArenaNet wants 200.000 players for the next beta.

So, even an “increased” droprate does not means that everyone will drop one, even if everyone farm it for 12 hours a day. The increase was certainly very small. Add two drops an hour to every megaserver and you double the number of portals dropped and you end up with 3200 players available for the beta.

And, as players leave the zone, either because they got a portal or are tired of farming it, the quantity of portal dropped will also drop. They may yet have to increase the droprate again to meet the quantity of players they want in their beta test.

No need to go pedantic over categorisation on release notes; it’s probably just put under that heading which is a general ‘Bug fixes, tweaks, etc.’

How would you feel after farming for 18 hours of braindead pve without any result while some guy comes in and says he got it within 15min? Nuff said.

Btw im calm, even if it doesnt look like that. After all i dont blame him but people behind rng wall.

My husband and I farmed silverwastes all day yesterday, at the end of the day I did the pacman maze and the tier 2 wiggle chest reward had a portal for me and I saw several others pop up that they got one too around that time. This was after the patch. My husband still doesn’t have one, but he’s happy that I got one at least.

Still going back to the Silverwastes this evening to have fun and do events, but now it’s just to have fun and not worry about getting a portal

I’m not going to try very hard to get one. RNGeesus rarely smiles on me. There was the one time I got a Spark, but I’m pretty sure he meant to give it to someone else in my party.

Luckier than me. Launch player and I don’t have a legendary yet or even had a precursor drop. Been at this for 3 days and not even a single exotic. x.o Wanna talk about bad luck, but you got a precursor which in itself is amazing as a drop. :p Also I am aiming for spark because my thief needs Incinerator >:3

Doesn’t this RNG logic apply to all games? You could get a great drop on your first few mobs or may take all day to get anything good and still might not. It’s a really low drop rate so that closed BETA isn’t super flooded. Open BETA will likely stress test it out.

Nice move Anet, granting access through mere RNG, rather than player “quality” (money spent, Hours spent, AP, skill level, pvp rank…). So a newbie with no more than 100 hours of playtime could get a portal and ppl with 2k+ hours of game (like me) will not. Why i won’t get the portal? Because 2700 hours and 3 years after the release, 2 legendaries and 0 precursors.

To the guy who posted that the RNG is affordable, 2 friends of mine got quip precursor from the forge, from the same ip with just a couple of hours from one try to the other. High level RNG (used in professional applications) may be almost perfect. The anet’s one is not (i don’t believe there is only a single algorithm in the world for an RNG function…).

No portal yet, but I’ve gotten two named Exotics, 70 Obsidian Shards and an Ascended Weapon Chest

Two nights and six hours and only one person pinged a portal in that entire time. They might have increased the drop rate, but they didn’t increase it enough to matter.

The past two days have been my off days. I really wanted the portal so I put over 20 hrs in. I decided to give up and give it one last hurah. I got a portal out of defending red rock it was in the bonus chest. I was squealing and shouting like an idiot on Skype.

Well i decided to continue today with “increased drop chance”. So far 27h of farming tagging kitten load of events and no portal still. Instead i got my 100th coat box and 130+ shovels. Ty for a slap in the face AN, youre welcome. Been doing sw way before all this “event” and cant drop one while random ddues jsut ging in and drop it within 20mins. And yes for that reason i feel entitled to get a portal.

Got mine few mins ago, was during vw which failed but got it from the first boss kill, so i guess doesnt mean that vw has to succeed to get it. Didnt farm much, maybe couple hours today.

I farmed for 10 hours. I gave up. This is a closed Beta, we just have to accept that not all of us our going to get in.

A full round of SW followed by a full one of DT and I didn’t, but my guildie in DT did (from an event chest after a skritt event). I think I’ll stick to SW from now on, I actively enjoy that map but DT was painful, even though it would be nice to have the geodes to buy recipes to match my four fossilized insects. I suppose I can always hope the newsletter invite option kicks in if no portal ever drops for me.

Did you see the question mark there? A question mark makes it a question. I was asking if it was a bug and not a tweak to the drop rate.

About 18-20 hours…. At least 5-7 of those hours after the patch and still nothing.. I’m going to go cry now. I hate farming, I detest it so much.

So. I just got mine maybe 30 minutes ago. And have been farming 14 hrs a day since this was announced.

Try boosting your magic find ( mine was around 530%)

Don’t give up, and tag as many mobs as you can ( I was on a necro with epidemic)

This event is making people really mean to each other. RNG is really a bad way to go about it. I’m none too happy myself.

True enough. I think I’ll pass. After a few hours, I too noticed the ugly growing in those zones.

I still don’t know what RNG means even after a Dev mentioned the word to me after I had said I was hyped to get a portal ^^
