I haven’t played GW2 for a long time and i was going to come back and check out the expansion but im a bit confused about the pricing on this thing. If i got it right the simple standard pack that costs 50 euro will get me both the core game and the expansion and there is no way to buy only HoT? Basically someone who just starts GW2 will pay 50 euro for the full experience while me as a returning player i have to pay 90 in total since i already have the core game?

There is a mega thread on this topic. Happy reading.

You aren’t buying the core game again the core game is f2p you are buying the expansion. The game was 10$ before hot released, and that was after 3 years of the game being so 50$ over three years is more than enough bang for your buck

I have nothing against the price i just dont like the fact that i bought the core game for 40 or 45 euro (dont really remember) back then and now i will have to pay 50 euro more for the expansion and if someone else starts right now he will pay just 50 to get the exact same product as me… A bit unfair dont you think?
That link goes to the thread that has discussed this ad nauseum. People are tired of explaining it and hashing it through again and again, hence the tendency to link to it. Actually, this thread might get merged into it anyway.
Short answer: the person that pays for the “exact same product” isn’t getting any of the stuff you had access to. No LS1, many archived achieves done, several skins introduced that have never returned, many alts at max level/crafting, hours/years of play time for its own sake. It’s a good thing not to make new players pay a hundred bucks just to join the game — many of them won’t, and an MMO needs new people to come in, the players need new people to come in.
$50 is the price point. Per ANet comments, it wouldn’t be any less if the core game weren’t included. This will be the model going forth, so if you really don’t want to pay for HoT, well, one day the next expansion will be here and core and HoT will be included in the bundle. So wait another year, pay your 50 bucks then, and you’ll get HoT for free! (Also there was a big sale on HoT right before LS3 dropped, it was $25 bucks, so maybe some other big change or event will cause another sale).

A lot of MMO’s are going to the “buy the expansion and get the core with it”. No one has blinked an eye at other MMO’s doing this but for some reason this particular MMO people are up in arms over it.

Again i have nothing against the price and yes i agree that lower price is more attractive for new players. Still paying almost double price in total as a returning player doesnt seem right to me. Just my own opinion. Anyway im not here to start an arguement about this ,i just wanted an aswer and thank you all for your time.

No, I don’t think it’s unfair at all. Not even a little unfair. Considering that this is how games work in almost every instance, that they go down in price.
I bought Guild Wars 1 for about $200 all up and now people can get it for $50. Is that unfair. No. Because I had a ton of time to play, the option to play before this.
In what world do you believe new people who are just starting now are at some kind of advantage? For example, depending on when you started playing, you could have played the entire first season of the living world for free. New people can’t play it at all.
If you logged in during season 2, you would have gotten all of season 2 for free. New players have to pay for that.
I’ve had experiences that new players will never have. I have items in my inventory new players will never get. I have a boatload of wealth from before inflation set in, where new players are playing catch up from day one.
The idea of removing barriers to entry for ANY mmo is normal and good. EQ doesn’t charge for any expansion but the current one. WoW doesn’t make you buy every single expansion, just the current one. Why?
To remove barriers to entry because new players in MMOs are at a disadvantage.
If you bought and played the game, experienced stuff, accumulated wealth, you’d be at an advantage. Do you really think you’d want to start over now, not having anything you’ve accumulated before now?
Because I wouldn’t take that deal.

Actually yes when i return to a game after a long time i like to start all over again since i dont really remember how the game works and obviously after a year or two alot of things have changed. So a fresh start is how i approach a comeback to game…

You have no achievement points on your account? You deleted all your gold? You have no skins unlocked?
Because you can buy the expansion and get a free account by starting over with it. You don’t have to add the expansion to the account you have. Then you’d have two accounts, both of them getting log in rewards, which are pretty valuable.
Edit: Either way it changes nothing I said. ANY MMO needs to remove barriers to entry for new players or it dies. If the game dies, you don’t have a game to come back to you and your initial investment is worth nothing anyway.
All MMOs suffer natural attrition. People leave games all the time. So if you don’t do this, there is on game, whether you personally start over or not. You’re not losing out. More players means a better game.

No i dont but that doesnt mean i would throw a tantrum of something if i had nothing at my account. You seem to be a very competitive person since you think that every new person that joins a game is at a “disadvantage” . Its a game not a race. Believe it or not there are many people like me who play games only to have fun enjoying all aspects of the game.Leveling is one of those aspects i believe working to get their next gear upgrade is a purpose that keeps many people occupied and to be honest playing a game that i have few things to work for isnt going to keep me occupied for long. At least thats how i see it.

This has nothing to do with being competitive. This has everything to do with enjoying the game. I’d wager for most people, rewards are part of the game. People set goals and they go for those goals and they get those goals.
Goals might be stat based, like specific armor, or it might be a cool skin that I need to complete the look of my character, which is more my speed.
Leveling doesn’t keep most people busy, since most people in the game are 80. Relatively few people level and keep busy doing it, by percentage, at least from my observations. And there are probably as many people who hate leveling and just want to get to end game and look for ways to skip leveling or ways to level as fast as they can.
Anet isn’t going to make their decision on how to price the game based on any one person or any group of people. They’re going to consider what’s good for the game. In my opinion your style of play is an outlier style of play. I think more people do play for rewards and what they can get, even if they’re not actually competitive. Because I’m NOT competitive.
But, I am happy I got to experience the entire living world season 1, because it’s fun. New players don’t have that option. Or the Twilight Arbor forward up path which is no longer in the game. Or Orr before the nerf. These are experiences I have that new players won’t.
The difference between the ten dollar game that was being sold before the game went free to play is certainly worth those extra experiences.
I’m enjoying the game by doing stuff. I can do stuff new players can never do. That’s worth money, whether you want to admit it is or not.

@OP don’t buy the expansion. Play the game you own for a bit and see if you like it. If you do, then I’d recommend buying HoT. Getting access to autolooting and gliding is (for me) worth the extra cash. (And if the core game doesn’t appeal that much to you, then don’t bother — HoT isn’t going to make it more fun.)
@OP you can wait for another 3 years, and get HoT for free when they launch a new expansion (if there is any).

Well, not for free. He’d need to actually buy that next expac in order to get HoT.

Well it kinda is right, since OP is now complaining that people get base game for free.
So hot will be free in their mind.
