A game should be a game, not gambling
Jesus Christ. These are the times we’re living in. You can’t have a gambling NPC in the game without some people having a mental breakdown because of it.
I feel like nowadays, you can’t do anything without offending some obscure group which you then have to apologize to, include warnings, hell, do you want to sign an agreement every time you log in saying “What you might encounter in the game might offend you?”
This is getting ridiculous.
when you go to a techer it is suppose him will teach you
when u go to school it is suppose you go for study
when u go to baseball it is suppose u play baseball
when u go to casino it is suppose you will play gambling game
when u play an mmo it is suppose you play mmo, not gambling
why they will keep warning me after 3 years of game about salvage Yellow and exotic stuff and they will no warning when i can lose everything? if USUALLY for 3 years when i can do something wrong they warning me, and when they put an NPC he doesent steal me all what i have, why i have to suppose now he can do?
you dont care about that, i’m happy with you and ppl like you, but the world is made by 7 bilions of ppl and we are different from you!!
We should probably add a warning to in-game alcoholic beverages that this content may offend alcoholics.
We should probably remove all cookies from the game, too, because some ancient native tribe in africa considers cookies the root of all evil.
We should also remove female characters, or at least include a warning that “While the female characters in the game are objects, real-life women are not.”, right?
And by the way, when you play baseball, and you get injured, do you say “I was supposed to be playing baseball, not get injured like this! How dare they do this to me!”?
Just don’t go to the NPC. No one is forcing you to go there and drop 250 ectos + a gazillion gold.
I went there once to see what was it all about, I just couldn’t be bothered with it. If other players want to gamble their way in the game, let them. They will find out soon why gambling is not a profitable as they think. They may have spreadsheets telling them they have profit this much and that much, but in reality, they probably can’t see they are having a net lost or something like that.
If you lost 1000 globs and 100g, that means very quickly you knew what was going to happen and you continued to roll with it. The NPC does tell you and it is extremely easy to see what is going on with the NPC.
You weren’t cheated or betrayed, you played an obvious gambling game and it simply didn’t pay off for you. Whereas it did pay off for others. Sometimes in life, you discover these things for yourself and luckily this was harmless since all that was lost was pixels.
Don’t gamble if you are not prepared to lose. Even if there is gambling in the game, you are not forced to do it. There is no way you could have not seen that the skrit is exactly a gamble and not a guaranteed money making automat.
omg if someone told me it was a gambling I NEVER GO TO THIS NPC but no one told me, i see NO WARNING , in this 3 years i see no GAMBILG IN THIS GAME but i see something u will lose something than you wil gain agan so i was thinking this was the same, it is so hard for u understand it? is so hard understand no all the ppl of the world is like you?
Are you 12? And, no gambling in this game? Have you ever used the toilet?
I’m pretty sure this thread wouldn’t exist if this little feature payed off for you.
Gambling is riddled throughout this game;
- the skritt, which was implied in the NPC dialogue
- the new year festival
- black lion chests
- mystic forge
Much of the game’s rewards are based on risk and gambling. This is just another, albeit smaller, addition

I agree with the OP and many here seem to miss his point that he was surprised at how big the stakes of that specific gamble were.
And yes, given that we get a warning even when trying to destroy a minor sigil in our inventory, a warning wouldn’t be out of place.
Should we also display a warning each time you click an enemy?
“WARNING: This enemy may fight back. Due to previous complains, we must inform you that this may cause injury and/or trauma to your in-game character and your own person in real life. If you agree with these terms, proceed by entering the security code we have just e-mailed you.”
and for someone told about mystic forge, u cant lose so much money without know what r u doing, because u have to buy than mix it, in this place u will lose just with a click and u lose alot of money in just few seconds…
But it is quite clear that the result is unpredictable. The tooltips on the items say you get random back. If it was a way to make money outright, everyone would be rich now.
There are only so many pop ups and warnings and tooltips Anet can add. Someone will always not read them or overlook them. It’s down to the responsibilty of the user to think “should I spend or gamble 100g, not knowing what I will get back”

you are right but it is the first time after 3 years we see something like that, my mistake was trust on anet, i never think they will put a gambling NPC, is like slot machines, click and lose

1000 globs? you would have had to use him a minimum of 4 times? why didn’t you stop after the first time again?
i take it you’ve also never used a black lion key

But it isn’t. This is just another NPC in a line of NPCs and other tricks that have done this. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. I actually won on this NPC, but I didn’t invest much, knowing I’d probably get shafted.
They exist for those who like a flutter. Next one you encounter (and there will be more I’m certain), just walk on by.
Dude are you serious? No one is forcing you to use the npc, if you wanna gamble for a CHANCE at making some profit, it’s your choice, worst case scenario, you lose some of your in game currency and that’s it, no real damage done. However if you choose to gamble and then happen to lose it, you can’t make a thread where you cry about it and ask for your money back, losing is part of gambling and part of life, just because things didn’t go your way, you cant suddenly change your mind and start crying about it.

Lol, what a post. You gamble and if someone doesn’t notice it after 2 minutes it’s his own fault.
‘would of been’ —> wrong
you gamble if U KNOW U ARE GAMBLING!!! the NPC of ram was something like that but u didnt lose, u bought items and when u open it u have a gain or in the worst case you didnt lose ANYTHING, i was thinking the same here, because of no warning, and no real difference from the ram NPC… it is so difficoult to understand for u?

i noticed you never answered the question of why you used it 4+ times
But this has been explained. It does say the result is random ie that you are gambling. It is there, at the NPC. And yes you could lose on the ram if you were unlucky. I know I did.
Do not gamble? If something says “it has a chance to”… don’t buy it.
If you don’t know what you spend gold on, or what to do with it, look it up online or ask people…
Well, at least this new merchant will introduce some variation on the forums.
We used to only get: “OMG I threw 3,000 gold down the mystic toilet and never got anything back!”
Now we’ll have: “OMG I lost eleventytwogazillion gold and ectos at the ecto merchant!”
It’s going to be great.
i noticed you never answered the question of why you used it 4+ times
because i was thinking this npc was the same of the olders, where sometime you should lose a bit, and sometime you will gain a bit more, so i was thinking ok, now i lost, next time i will take back what i lost with a little amount of gain
now i’ll make u a question, why this npc is inside the game? what is his purpose?

Hate to break it to you, but that is the EXACT DEFINITION OF GAMBLING. At what point were you confused again?
I hate to say it, but you just depth-charged your own argument, if you ever had one to begin with.

At the risk of argumentum ad hominem…you’re not a quick wit, are you?
differences is: if usually u lose a bit like 1g, then u gan 1,2g, is different from lose 500 gold or more, if the max trait is to lose 1,2 gold is different from lose 1000 globs and 100 gold…

No, your stated argument was that this vendor should not exist in the first place, not that his return rates should be different. Are you changing your argument now because you finally realize it’s flawed?

- You used the vendor.
- You lost money and items.
- You kept gambling anyway.
What warning would be big enough to get it through to you???

something like “this npc is a gamble game” should be enough, i keep CLICK, not gamblic because i was thinkis this npc was like the ram festival, he was not like that!!!!!! a warning should keep me away from this
but i’ll make u a question again, u didnt replyed, pls do it
what is the purpose of this NPC in this game?

It’s a (really obvious) gold sink. It’s probably programmed to give out a little less on average than it receives (just like slot machines). It’s something that every MMO ever needs, or its economy will become horribly broken very quickly. The mystic forge probably ate ten times more items in terms of gold value than it spit back out (or maybe a hundred times more, going by my own personal luck with that thing). Same principle.
The problem is this: You did not think before you acted. While this sucks for you, personally, and is a very human thing, it’s kind of on you that you spent your entire fortune on this NPC. If you immediately go for the expensive thing without even knowing what it does… Who does that? We have this nice little saying “Gier frisst Hirn” – literally “greed eats brain”. That’s what happens when you don’t stop to think for a minute before buying a pig in a poke.
It’s a game. While it’s supposed to be fun, its function is not to think for you. If you buy a 50g dagger at the auction house that’s entirely useless because your brain went “expensive = awesome”, that’s not the game’s fault, it’s human error.
One could argue for a better description of this NPC’s services. But.
“Double-click to destabilize and gain globs of ectoplasm and valuable junk items in random amounts.”
The item’s description literally tells you that the outcome is random and going to be junk. Granted, it says valuable, too, but the term “junk” should be a dead giveaway, in addition to the gambl-y nature of the entire description. That is your warning.
The fact that you “lost everything” is rotten luck; I bought a few cheap ones and came out even, then stopped because eh, not worth it. Buying one and losing, then blowing your entire fortune on this thing? Your own fault.

You want a hypothesized reason for the NPC? It’s an ecto sink. There. Boom.
The NPC in the ram festival was also a “gamble” NPC. Sometimes you won. Sometimes you didn’t. How many clicks did you expect it would take for the skritt to “pay out”?
Honestly, I don’t think any amount of warning would have stopped you. And no one is changing the NPC or refunding your fake money.
A very good lesson to you.
Don’t put 30 chilli peppers into your mouth at once – you take one and taste a little bit to see how ‘hot’ it is.

Exactly what I did as well. I bought a single purchase of the cheapest option, saw what was inside, and said to myself, “Oh, that’s what this guy does.”
so just to make it clear…
this topic is about a guy who bought some unspecified containers for all his money and globs without trying it at first or thinking about it, opened them, got nothing and now he cries he got robbed, right?
I think someone should create a meme or something for it, it could be funny

If you didn’t know it was gambling, why did you spend 1000 Globs without knowing what it was for? Seems pretty stupid to hand over all those mats and gold without knowing why or what for, lol. Which makes me think you DID know what it was for and are just kitteny that you lost out.

if u know this are chilli peppers, but if u think are candys… that’s why of the warning… i dont say it’s anet fault, i know no one forced me to go there and click, but:
1) i was suppose to play a fantasy game, not a gambling game, and i never found something like that inside a mmo i’ve played
2) if your mother give you something u trust her, onestly i was trusting anet, i never immagine that they can add something like that
it’s definetly my fault, but onestly not for clicking but for trust on them, i’m more carefull if i go in a bad place in the real life, but i will not when i sleep, or when i’m at home, i was thinking gw2 was like home, just a game where u have fun with friends, not a gambling game, i’ve bought a fantasy mmo, not a gambling game….
i hope to not found also some porn in the future, because i have children who play this game…. but now, everything can happen….
One NPC alone simply does not make this a gambling game. There is other gambling in this game and has been since inception and on a far larger scale than a completely innocuous NPC. Examples have been given many times now. The mystic forge people “trust” to give good results and they often lose thousands of gold. It is no different at all in any shape, myth or form than this NPC. Except this NPC is of less worth and has less impact on the game than the forge.

I’m going to guess you did not participate with the Moa Racing. You placed a bet and if you won you got money, if not you got no money. That’s how any type of gambling works. Losing, Breaking Even, or Winning. Anet should not have to spell every single thing out so that you don’t make a mistake. Also, you didn’t have to use this NPC. This NPC isn’t part of any story and is in a cave with a hidden entrance so its a use are your own risk.
Edit: Funny thing I typed Gambling into the gw2 wiki search bar and it popped up the page for the Mystic Forge xD

The Jotun have a very old and revered saying:
“He who give shinies to skritt get no sympathy on electric webs.”
How did you even loose this amount of money in one go? Are you that blind?
You should have realised it was a gambling NPC (wich is really obvious btw…) and stopped immediatly when you started loosing. But you kept going on and lost your money and ectos.
Bad for you, you made really bad choices and you have no excuses. I don’t see why Anet should refund you the gold. This is just ridiculous.
You have got to be kidding. You knew after the first pull of the lever what was going on. In you own words you said you knew there would be a different return and you hope it would be for the best. Now yoru QQing over your inability to control yourself. And want to blame someone but yourself. Sad

Different strokes for different folks OP.
You don’t like this NPC because it’s gambling, that’s fine. It’s not your thing. Other people do like it. They have lots of gold and are having a little bit of fun. Let them.
I’m sorry you have a bad experience with this npc, but lofl. You really should have “figured it out” well before you “lost everything.” You compare this to the NPC from the lunar festival, and that is actually relatively accurate. You could take a loss there as well, and some people did.
