A good column about HoT
It’s too early to ask this question, because we don’t have all the information.
Look in the old days we might get in an MMO expansion an entire area that can be cleared in 3 weeks to a month. Anet might not be giving as many zones, but that doesn’t mean we’ll be able to clear those areas faster.
Here’s the deal. In order to get to all the parts of the area, you’re going to have to unlock many types of masteries. You’ll need gliding to get to some, mushrooms to get to another. You’ll need lore to access other content.
But you can’t level them all at the same time. You have to pick masteries to focus on and after unlocking them, level them by getting XP.
So it’s conceivable this area might contain less zones but as much content as other games. That it might take as long to clear as any other expansion for any other game.
We just don’t know at this point. We don’t even have all the information.
All any MMO really does is give us a list of stuff to do. If it’s not a raid, it’s a new PvP type or whatever. This gives us new WvW stuff, the new PvP map, and a least some new zones, plus new ways to interact with those zones.
But let’s not forget Guild Halls which need to be built and added to. Let’s not forget masteries of which there are likely going to be many and they can be added. Let’s not forget that there’s better AI with more challenging content.
We don’t know anything about that challenging content yet. It might not be a raid in the traditional sense, but it might be as hard to get through as some raids. We just don’t know.
Because of this, we have no way of knowing if the points in this article are valid or not.
If the game is fun and entertaining and challenging enough, people will enjoy unlocking masteries and playing through content long term and it will be worth it.
If not then it won’t be. But what we know now isn’t enough to even ask the question. And asking the question now isn’t really good journalism.
Way to early. I can’t comment anything on HoT till i actually see the magnitude of what it offers for myself. Even tho they are important bits of information they gave us so far…they are still literally bits of information.
You’ll need gliding to get to some, mushrooms to get to another.
I can’t adequately express how very thrilled I am about this. Especially the mushrooms. Given the options of sliding down a giant cheese grater naked into a vat of alcohol and having more Super Mario nonsense in an MMO, I’d go with the Super Mario nonsense, of course. But I’d be scowling the whole time.
Yeah gliding should be awesome, but I hope they’ll add much more NEW (not just rehashed) elements to the game. But like they said, HoT will be a frame to build upon in the future.

Good luck.
Most of the x-pac has me really excited. The limited scope of climates in the x-pac does not. I like variety, and the only variety this x-pac will offer in the way of diverse climates is Jungle: Canopy, jungle floor, and well, more jungle in the middle.
It would have been nice to have a section of this be in a snowy region, a coastal region, a volcanic region etc. just to break up the monotony of the scenery.
I really thought that was how they’d do it to when they started showing how widespread Mordy’s tentacles were reaching. Instead, we are getting only a few maps with basically the same climate.
