Altoholics and The New Mastery System
I can’t find the blog post anymore, but they said a long time ago that mastery points will be account bound. Just like WvW ranks.
Immortal Kingdom [KING]
I had hoped it would work like WvW where points are shared but how you distribute them is character-bound. That would be best, I agree.
However, as far as I understand it both the points themselves and their distribution are account-bound.

“The Mastery system is an account-wide system that offers bonuses and abilities for max-level characters in Heart of Thorn”
As I understand it, it’s more like PvP progression than WvW. There are a set number of tracks that can be progressed and any one of your chars can progress a track (if they’re are in the right area of the world and have it selected).
ANet may give it to you.

Here is where they say the progression is account bound.

“…….since the Mastery system provides account-based progression, new characters are always welcome.”

More like a hybrid. You have to spend points (like wvw) but you also have to progress via xp like PvP.

Yah. Maybe so. I can’t find a quote where they specifically say one way or another and what they’ve said can be interpreted either way. I’ll try to dig some more but we may have to wait till they release more information to say for sure,

Ok. I’ve found this that makes it sound like the Mastery system is character based in progression and not account based.
http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/473/feature/9340/page/2
The WvW ability system is a bit of a parallel for what we’re trying to accomplish with masteries, so you can use that as a concept. We want to provide that same concept and evolve it even more with PvE. It’ll complement everything that you’re doing: combat, exploration, lore, building, crafting… all of those components will have elements that are supported by it, with combat being the most important one when you think about true, meaningful progression.
ANet may give it to you.
Thank you everyone who have responded!
Edit You can’t say ‘who + responded" without the + because of the ’kitten’ censoring system. Lol.

That quote says it’s pretty much the same as WvW. Which tells me, coupled with all the other links provided here, that masteries will indeed be account-bound.

You’ve misunderstood what we’ve been discussing and what I said there. We already know it’s account bound. What we were trying to figure out if the progression was character based like WvW or account bound based like PvP. What I was saying there was it looks like it’s character based like WvW and not account bound based like PvP.

Like many of you, I am excited for the new mastery system, even though we’ve heard very little about it. New flavor and new content is always welcome.
And like many more of you, I play multiple characters—all 8 of them (and soon 9—gear and tomes awaiting the revonant) and in all types of content PvP, WvW, PvE…
With new masteries coming out, will we be forced into “maining” one character to be able to progress their mastery enough to reach the new content? If maxing a mastery is too fast, we’ll just speed run and blow through everything and end up bored. If it’s too slow, we’ll have to pick a favorite to progress it to the end, leaving many alts behind.
Will mastery be similar to WvW Rank where it’s account-shared, yet you can spend your points differently on each character? This would be the best case scenario.
I have 24 80s and will have 27 80s when HOT comes out. So I probably would need everything to be shared or else it will take me forever to progress.

I don’t know. If it takes (arbitrary number) 800,000 XP and 75 MPs to unlock a full Mastery line, and a player can distribute the points as in the WXP lines, then it will only take once to fulfill every Mastery line ever, as long as you have an equivalent number of characters.
I guess that’s good for the game. I mean it’s either make and get to L80 a character for each Mastery line, or….one or more characters must acquire the XP and MPs for each unlock.
I suppose it is six of one, half-dozen of the other at this point, as we don’t know what all is involved in maxing out a Mastery line. (It will probably be much easier to max-level a character, what with Tomes, etc.)
Not sure which way would be best for the health of the game.
I know exactly how it works from participating in beta.
There list of Mastery Lines each with its own experience progression bar. Select the mastery you wish to level, i.e. gliding, and all experience earned goes towards progressing that Mastery. You can only progress one Mastery at time but the Mastery can be change while out of combat.
Level the selected Mastery thru normal game play, doing events and killing mobs. All the things that you normally do to level your character now will level your mastery once you hit 80. Keep in mind that HoT masteries can only be progressed in HoT.
Each mastery line has multiple tiers. Each tier grants you a new ability or increased proficiency in an ability. After you level up the a tier, you are able to unlock the ability by spending a Mastery Point.
The Mastery Points are earned by exploration, completing challenging events, killing bosses, getting achievements, etc.
All Mastery progression is account bound. All Mastery Points earned are account bound. Everything you unlock or progress is account wide.

This doesn’t tell us if the progressions are account bound like PvP or character bound like WvW, which is what we are discussing here.
For example on the day that the expansion opens lets say I have 30 points in Tyrian Masteries to assign from doing old content and it’s character bound like WvW. I could have one char put all those points on fractals, because it’s my fractals char. A second char could put all 30 points towards a particular precursor and a 3rd char puts those 30 points on a second, different Precursor. A 4th puts those points on another, completely different Mastery line.
If progress is account bound like PvP and I have 30 points to assign, if I put all 30 on fractals, then that’s it. I have no points I can put elsewhere for Precursor mastery on another char. It’s a much more rigid system.
ANet may give it to you.

At this time, it does not work that way. Once you progress a mastery and assign points to it, it is locked in for your entire account.
Maybe later they will let you reassign mastery points at will, but that wasn’t a feature in beta.

At this time, it does not work the way you are describing.
I described two completely different ways it might work. Are you saying it doesn’t work either way or one of those ways?
Remember, they have already said that the progression model is like WvW. In WvW points are assigned by each character.
Were you able to swap characters in the betas to know that they can’t each assign points?
ANet may give it to you.

I didn’t swap characters in the Beta, so I have no idea whether one could distribute accrued MPs individually by character.
Guess we can look next time, though Beta does not always equal what will be available on Live.
1. mastery POINTS are account wide and work like WvW rank points
2. you earn XP for a mastery track at X amount u can use a mastery point to progress said track.
3. all progress made on one toon is not shared with other toons. just like WvW
4. mastery system is designed to retain players
Fractal lvl 80 – 126 AR
3. all progress made on one toon is not shared with other toons. just like WvW
these will make no sense… you can spend 5-6times less time and open all masteries that way.
for example you need 30 points to open full mastery.
You earned 30 points and on different characters you can learn different masteries?
I hope these will never happen!
BEst way is like in sPVP or Hybrid sPvP with WvW.
For example. you can chose which mastery you want to learn(sPvP like) then earn mastery points and the you have to chose where so spend them in these mastery.
like:
You earn 20 masteries in languages and you should chose where to spend points from like 3 languages and these you can chose on different account different language.
Or Legendary. You earn points in it, but on different account you can chose for example:
Weapons
1 Meele weapons
2 Range weapons 2 Medium Armor
Armore
1 Light Armor
2 Medium Armor
3 Heavy Armor

Aww cute, someone thinks he knows the final result from participating in a stress test where they gave us what, from the very first glance, obviously was a VERY VERY early beta build (could even argue for calling it an Alpha build tbh), already from when that build was compiled to today a LOT of changes could have happened, and even more can happen before launch of HoT, so no you dont know anything more than anyone else of the community, the only thing you know for certain is what the devs are explicitly said in the blog posts (and yes i participated in that stress test myself as well)
it works just like WvW mastery. mastery points are shared account bound but each character can specialize how you want it to be. just like WvW mastery, if you know what i mean, unless you never been to WvW.
