Let us all be honest, the game was ok, and nothing compared to GW1. I know, I know, it has been beaten down so much the horse has already decomposed. Sucks that Guild Halls are coming only within the 2nd part if the game (or expansion) and even so, GvG is rumored to come with t as well.
However, even if none of you all remembered how upsetting the Campaigns were for GW1, I, for one, and actually really excited for this new expansion. I have very low hopes for it being successful, and I am so hoping to eat these words someday, but the thought of Guild Halls really gets me excited. It is probably the best thing about GW1. Inviting strangers to see your amazing mansion or castle was just groovy. even having the ability to 1v1 within them was amazing.
I am just hoping this expansion brings back the elements that made GW1 successful and polish it up a bit to make it more fun. The whole “Hurry up and play the DLC or you wont experience it” really killed it for GW2 and forced many players to quit the game even before the good stuff came out. Scarlet was my reason… that thing just wouldn’t die and after the 97th or 98th “DLC” I just said w/e, time for TERA.
However, I did come back and realized my legendary weapons are now Account bound.. GG! My “ascended” gear is acct bound.. GG Again! You do not have to rush the DLC to experience it.. G-Frikken-G!
I guess what I am trying to say is, I hope this expansion brings more of us vets back into the game and make this game somewhat bearable now. I do miss the jumping puzzles and what not so it may be fun <3
Welcome back to all the people who are like me and are waiting for the new expansion. much love from Beast Gate!

i like how you start the post by shoving your own opinion as consensus. i for one prefer GW2, but both games are so different it’s quite silly to compare them in the first place. really couldn’t bother to read the rest of the post after that.
but no, of course you’re not the only one coming back for the expansion. assuming as much would be silly.
Let’s be honest. Guild Wars 1 had strong points and Guild Wars 2 has strong points and they only people who categorically say one is better than the other are people who came in here as Guild Wars 1 players and expected Guild Wars 1.5.
Guild Wars 1 had several glaring flaws that made it worse for me than Guild Wars 2. Lack of an automated marketplace, extreme pathing, and not having a persistent world.
Guild Wars 1 definitely had more build variety, though, and was centered around making builds. This game isn’t. Welcome to the dark side.
No, you’re not the only one coming back. There are lots of people coming back. More to the point there are a lot of people who judged this game coming in based on preconceptions, only to come back and find they like the game more.

Very well said, Vayne. Many forget the flaws of GW1. People tend bathe in nostalgia and forget the negative stuff. That’s human btw, helps us to overcome past traumatic events.

I personally expect more veterans coming back to check out the expansion. GW2 has always been a casual-friendly game because of the lack of vertical gearing progression. Even if you miss a few month you won’t get left behind. There are some minor balances and some new maps but the core of the game is unchanged.
You can login after a long break and enjoy it for a bit and then go wherever you want. GW2 is waiting for you.

Am I the only one that quit Guild Wars 1 and now can’t go back?
I used to love that game. But now when I try to play it, the combat just feels so blah. You just stand there using your skills while your monk keeps you alive and your heroes stand there and use their skills. Edge over one inch and you break your skill animation. Going anywhere is a matter of going down lanes with towering unclimbable hills on both sides. Trying to jump over a tiny curb in a city is impossible. The maps feel dead. Mobs wandering around but nothing happening and no one to see. The guild halls were nice, while the my guild was alive. Now it’s a barren spot.

I played GW1, just the base game none of the other stuff. And I quit before I finished the story (ring of fire half way done).
From what I can remember playing I’d say it didn’t even qualify as an MMO. Outside of the hub area, everything was instanced and nothing was really persistent.
So as far as I’m concerned they are two games that aren’t in the same genre, but tap into the same lore. And I think GW2 is a far better game than GW1 was, personal opinion of course, in fact I think it’s the best MMO at the moment. Again, personal opinion.
Also, no, you are not the only one coming back for the expansion. Devs have commented a big spike in active players after the announcement of HoT. Some of them would be new players who picked up GW2 with a hefty discount as well.

If you think this way about the game what is the difference an expansion can make you will find fault with it anyway. Not all the people who came from GW (the 1 does not exist) find that GW2 is a bad game. Quite the opposite we like it cause it is different. We did GW already. Myself I spent over 7.5 years playing it. Had a semi successful guild. Met quite a few people there in the game. Have three GWAMM’s, four full Halls of Monuments. I liked the ability to change builds and things like that. I farmed some my main was my sin. Did I over use my sin on farming no my sin was a title kitten using an Assassin’s Promise build which was epic. Did I perma? yes sometimes where it was useful, but didn’t like the pressure of the build much. I did tombs runs with my sin, ranger, necro, and monk. On my sin I usually used a shadow of haste sliver armor build. I found that more fun and I liked the ability to stop when I wanted to and chat without leaving. I had a lot of fun in GW
When GW came out it was not the game it ended up being. There were no sin’s, rit’s, dervishes, or paragon’s Tombs was done by warriors and it took around four hours to complete.
Then GW2 was announced in a magazine. The announcement was not the game itself but the idea of it. It came about because under the engine that GW is under it could never improve or be changed. So they made a new game over a five year period GW2. It was not perfect when it came out games never are lol. Over time GW2 has changed things are added, things are removed. Skills are changed buffed or nerfed. New areas are added like Southsun cove Dry top and the Silverwastes. The game has the potential to be the greatest MMO of all time. Ok that was a little over the top lol.
If people would of just stuck around played even some they would know the changes. Someone that quit for a time could of kept playing even some of the time. It is a buy to play game. How hard is it to log in for a bit and play. People like you are the ones that cannot stand change if it is not like their old game then it’s not good enough. I look at it like this. No its not like my old game and I’m glad. I like GW for what it is yes, but I like GW2 just as much or more, because it’s not GW or WoW or any WoW clones.
Point is try to enjoy the game for what it is not for what you think it should be, because of your other games.

Strangely, while I have huge nostalgia over GW1, every bit of that nostalgia really comes from things that were just not well thought out. Things like Frenzied Defense + Healing Signet + Vow of Silence or Melandru’s Resiliance + Foul Feast. Or, for the two-man combo, Arcane Langour + Equinox exhaustion-locking the entire defending team in Fort Aspenwood. All of these were frankly not good for the game, but they were immensely fun.
Guild Wars 2 is the better game for gameplay, but I won’t pretend it’s perfect. I have fond memories of GW1, but they ironically, are not for the good stuff in the game.
I really liked GW1. I really like GW2. I’m very excited for the expansion, and I have no expectations beyond what has been revealed, so not only will it be impossible for me to be disappointed, I should be pleasantly surprised by all the things they haven’t told us yet.
Feel free to use this approach if you wish, for GW2 and for everything in life. The people who have bad attitudes about the game (e.g. OP) are the ones who always think they deserve more. No wonder they’re always unhappy.

Just like anything in life, keep your expectations low that way you can be pleasantly surprised If things surpass your expectations. Theres not many things that i personally am blown away by that has been announced for the expac yet but thats not gonna stop me from playing it, im keeping a neutral mind set until it releases and i can actually play it.

I quit and resume periodically, typically playing for a few weeks every few months. The details of the expansion got me HYPED, as it seems like an expansion mostly catered to my wishes.
I’ve been playing ever since, and I am legitimately enjoying myself. No, I do not believe that this game is as good as the glory days of Guild Wars 1, but it has strengths of its own that allow it to stand out in the stagnant MMO genre.
erg I just hate threads that start with “Am I the only one…”.

OT: I’m sure several will come back. But why would you start your post like this, so negative and accusational? Read what you wrote, it doesn’t set a good stage.
I came back already in anticipation for it though. I have high hopes for Revenant.
I’m with all those who see the games as totally different.
I bought but didn’t play the original much. It wasn’t really an MMO. It was more lobby’ish and there were a few other things I didn’t like.
GW2 is generally much better in my books. Though it also never really hooked me. One thing I preferred about the original was combat design. I don’t like cooldown driven combat. I wish they’d stuck with an energy style resource like thieves and now revenants (hooray) have.

All I can say is:
Touch Rangers
i for one prefer GW2, but both games are so different it’s quite silly to compare them in the first place.
Not at all. Guild Wars 2 is a sequel to Guild Wars. Comparing them is only natural.

Lord of the Rings is the sequel to the Hobbit, they’re completely different works and comparing them isn’t all that useful either.
The only reason people say not to compare GW1 and GW2 is because they’re tired of hearing why one is so much better than the other. But it is completely reasonable to compare them on some level. It’s a natural thing to do. Even you compared them in a post above.

There are probably as many people who think Guild Wars 2 is better than Guild Wars 1. Do you have any idea how many people tried Guild Wars 1 and left because of pathing or the inability to jump. It may sound crazy if you’re a Guild Wars 1 fan, but there are many who tried it, found the limitations too great, and left.
Guild Wars 1 was a better game if you liked making builds. That was the big advantage it had. Making builds. But what percentage of the playerbase enjoys that aspect of gaming? Surely more people enjoy just running around and killing stuff. For those people Guild Wars 2 might be the better game.
For people who want a marketplace instead of standing around in Spamadan Guild Wars 2 is the better game. For those who want a true MMO where you can run into people in the open world, Guild Wars 2 could be a better game.
It’s not so cut and dried as you think. Bottom line is, one of the games is an MMORPG and one of them is not. There’s not much reason to compare them even if people think there is.
You’re comparing them again…while telling people not to compare them.
compare
estimate, measure, or note the similarity or dissimilarity between.
Also GW1 is an MMORPG. They just deviated from some of the more traditional ways of doing things in certain areas, but it is still an MMORPG.
BOTTOM LINE, people compare things, including GW1 and GW2. It’s fine if you don’t like it, but don’t expect everyone to stop just because you don’t like it. It’s pretty cut-and-dried.

The revenant will be interesting to play because it brings back some things from GW1. It’s not a mana bar exactly, but it kinda functions like one. And then there’s those sustain skills. And the fact that it’s similar to ritualist/dervish. It should be a lot of fun and really mix things up! I’m curious to see if the specializations will also do things like that.
Stronghold also. It’s not GvG exactly, but it can function in a similar way. They said they would have leaderboards for guilds in stronghold. I just hope that they aren’t like the other leaderboards, just slapped onto the GW2 site. I really am hoping we can get all the leaderboards integrated into the actual game someday!
It’ll be nice to have guild halls again too. I hope there’s as much variety as GW1 guild halls, but we will have to wait and see what they do.

Even Anet says Guild Wars 1 isn’t an MMRPG. The idea of an MMORPG is to have a persistent world. Not a lobby game where you go into areas with 8 people. They’re different games. According to Anet Guild Wars 1 was a CORPG. If you want to argue it, argue with them.

Really isn’t much point to it. GW and GW2 are fundamentally different games. They share lore, setting and business model. That’s it. Everything else is completely different.
It’s no more meaningful to compare GW2 to GW than it is to any other random game you’d care to name.

Yeah GW so wasn’t an MMO and that was one of the main reasons I didn’t play.
Part of comparing is pointing at similarities and differences. Saying we shouldn’t compare because they have differences makes no sense. But I’m not going to keep going on about this, this isn’t what the forum post is about and neither of us are going to change each other’s minds. We might as well be performing Who’s On First.
Just don’t tell people that they shouldn’t compare them. If people want to have a discussion about GW1 vs GW2 and so on, they’ve got no reason not to so long as they are respectful about it. There’s no reason to discourage that discussion.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but who has actually said, in this thread, that you shouldn’t compare them? You’re putting words into other people’s mouths.
Someone should be able to say, it’s pointless to compare them (which it is) without your saying they’re trying to tell you what not to do. They’re just disagreeing with you – which they’re perfectly entitled to do.
Obvious answer here. The question in the title seems to suggest that someone is surprised to find they are alone in something, while you might as well be asking “am I the only one who likes burgers?” Anyway, I’m hoping to lure back a friend or two with this expansion.

Am I the only one that hates this question?
I think it’s human nature to want to be part of something larger. When someone asks am I the only one to do something, what they’re really asking for is validation.
Because if you were the only one doing something out of all the people in the world, there’s probably a reason for it.
If no one else was coming back to the game the OP might question his decision to come back. By asking he’s asking for validation.
The question sounds silly if you’re following the forum or playing the game, because we see people coming back all the time, but you know, it’s not that big a deal to ask something like this…even if my first reaction was a bit more acerbic.

I super can’t stand GW1. It’s very disappointing because I want to play it. I need to play it even. It’s the only way I’ll get a raccoon mini and I REALLY want that raccoon mini for my main. But it’s just so bad, and I can’t do it. It isn’t even that it’s hard, cause it really isn’t. It’s just bad.

I disagree that GW2 is a sequel to GW1.
Its more like a continued of the IP.
Calling GW2 a sequel, is like calling World of Warcraft a sequel to Warcraft 3…. just saying.

Um, it is. WoW is actually more a sequel to WC3 than GW is. It’s more like calling Star Wars: The Old Republic a sequel to Knights of the Old Republic. They both exist in the same world, but spread out by so much time that the events of the one really have no baring on the events of the second, with only minor overlap.
WoW’s storyline is pretty much a direct continuation of WC3, so that’s actually a legitimate sequel, just in a different genre.

This would be a good time to do it. So much has changed already in the base game, and then with the expansion on top of that they’d have quite a bit to see and do.
Any idea how long ago they quit?

I absolutely love GW1 but not gonna lie, it’s hard to do anything in it after playing GW2 so long. It can be frustrating not to be able to do something as simple as jumping. But I think if you put enough time into it, you’d get used to it and enjoy it on some level. How far did you get?

Haven’t even gotten out of Ascalon yet. I have a pretty sound Ranger/Necro build that’s all about regen and fights are just boring at all hell. I think I’m level 14, so I’m at whatever part of the story fits that level range. But it’s been three years now, so I don’t know.

The early game is tedious, but once you get access to the Elite skills you spend a lot of time theorycrafting and tweaking. I got to a point that I had a different build for most areas I went in, depending on the mobs there. My warrior was a bit more generic but she swapped between a Dragon slash adrenalin burst sword/shield warr, a W/D scythe warrior, Triple chop/Cyclone Splinter axe warr. My ranger had a wider variety of builds, Triple condition ranger with BA/AP, Splinter/Barrage, Triple/Dual Glass Arrow/Splinter or Brutal, Incendiary/Poison Splinter, Melandru’s condition ranger for Jade Quarry anti turtle duty, Glass turret/pew pew. My elementalist had a few builds Sandstorm Earth, Renewing mind blast, Triple Echo MS, Renewing SF, etc etc
Elite skills opened up a whole new avenue of builds and it’s really where the game begins. Hunting for them was an awesome end game
