Thank you ArenaNet for this amazing game.

I appreciate all the work you’ve put into making and maintaining it. I appreciate that there’s no subscription fee smothering my enjoyment. I loved all the free content you added over the first two years, AND the expansion you can pay to play if you want it.

Your biggest fault is being too generous and making all these guys think they deserve more free stuff than you’ve already given us.

Thank you.

It was really nice, till you insulted part of the player base. I know it’s frustrating to see complaint after complaint when you’re having fun, but I’d edit this before it gets an infraction.

While I agree that a thank you is great sometimes, those free updates were “sold” during the pre-order of the game, it was a promise. It’s not being too generous, it is simply respecting what they said during pre-orders.

Most of those free updates weren’t specifically sold. It’s one thing to say we’re going to do updates, but when the game was sold, the living story hadn’t been conceived or described yet.

So if you liked stuff like The Nightmare Tower, the Marionette, or Escape from Lion’s Arch, as I did, then a thank you is still something one can offer.

Basically Anet took a huge risk and in many ways that risk didn’t pay off, but I enjoyed Season 1 more than I enjoyed Season 2.

Thanks for the heads up, I got a little fed up with never seeing anything positive on these forums. Especially the really sarcastic threads.

Negativity mostly thrives in discussion >

Positivity mostly thrives in action >

Thus, internet forums at bound to be 90% negative, allowing for the rare positive to slip through (but it doesn’t last long).

It’s a simple matter of, when people are happy and things are going good, there isn’t a lot to talk about. In fact, I think it’s safe to say that talking in general largely comes from the discussion of problems (whether problems in the sense of “malfunction” or problems in the sense of “question/answer”).

There is friendly banter too, but seeing as how game forums don’t like people talking about stuff other than the game, that sort of thing is limited. So in a way, game forums tend to force the negativity by design. They remove one of the few things that can go on for pages while being positive (friendly banter) by keeping things on-topic. The result is that game forums tend to be either really negative or really inactive. One of the two.

Compare hub city map chat when it’s busy, to any old thread on here, and you will see what I mean. That stuff can go on for hours, and be largely whimsical and friendly, because it’s allowed to go way off the rails.

Or words to that effect.

Last time i checked i payed for the expansion i didn’t get it for free. If someone in your family bought you the expansion, that doesn’t mean it was free. In fact i payed as if it were a full game not an expansion…..and it’s not even an expansion worth’s content all in all at this point. This putting aside how many things they’ve broken with their new systems.

Like this post and agree with it 100% maybe some can’t see it because like you mention they are used to get free stuff and I am not referring to everything is free, cause it’s not… in principle nothing is because most of us paid for the game…. but devs could just leave it there as it is and only release payed expansions… instead they add events like Halloween, winter, etc, give free cool looking dragon minis, living seasons were free initially and some other things that were added on the way that weren’t included in the original release of the game that we payed for.
We are kinda spoiled by them as they care about what community says and keep downgrading content for everyone or attending to suggestions…. Obviously they have limited time resources and can’t attend to them all as soon as they came out, fixes have priority yet we continue being so demanding as if we were own something just cause we bought our game as any other… I don’t see people being as demanding for the most regular console games, they have even worst commercial strategies like having half of the game as dlc.
kinda getting detoured, my intention was not ranting about community, I still love it, each has the right of having an individual personality and is free to complain about what they want, just wanted to spread some love with my spray and pray words… kinda am all over the place now -_-

Ignoring mistakes won’t make the game better, it will just get worse. So one might think you aren’t really interested in the future of the game.

Also I only see 3 free new areas. This is not exactly much considering how old the game is by now.

Holiday events happen in absolutely all mmos regardless of the payment model they chose. Compared to payed mmos, free mmos use these occasions to make money. It’s normal….but saying we should be thankful for something everyone does and is considered normal, is out of place. Hell..they even happen in some single player games (and most multi player games) nowadays via FREE DLC. You have to understand these type of content are vital to companies that want to keep their customers interested in their product and in most cases a means of making more money indirectly via other stuff.

LS updates are vital considering the amount of content they deliver is mediocre at best by any mmo standard. Without LS there is no reason to play if you are up to day with everything you are interested in. Again it’s an old excuse. You must not have played other mmos. Other mmos come up with very consistent content (even if you like that content or not) on an yearly basis. We had to wait for a mediocre full-priced expansion what…3 years? Yes LS was vital for them otherwise without it this game would have been gone long ago. Also through LS is a means of exciting players to buy stuff from the cash shop (again not a bad thing).

Problem about cash shop appears when the nr. of “stuff” we get in cash shop far exceeds the nr of “stuff” we get ingame just by playing.

GW2 started great…and visionary..and turned into a lackluster, with questionable goals, game.

You can not convince me an “almost exclusive cash shop” content game like GW2 makes less then a traditional 15$/month game unless you have actual numbers to show me. Until then google f2p and see how much of an income they have over p2p games and those statistics are made on games that are much lower ranking then GW2. If you consider GW2’s position the numbers increase even more.

You must not have played other mmos.

Have played many, got bored of them… without giving names I am familiar with different styles of mmos, ..lol kinda have to give names here to explain myself but yeah… WoW (got bored of it after reached max level and got all the needed gear in no time), Tera online (eye candy fest), Final Fantasy (repetitive, no revolutionary idea), silk road (good for a fully free one, lacked updates)..Kotor(…just won’t talk about this) … Ragnarok online! (maybe my favorite after GW1.. nothing bad to say about this one), maple story (that’s a true $hop game!) and the list goes, …the point never felt spoiled on those games as I feel here and I like it. (Yet I admit there was a period of no content being added, but those days seems to be gone)

You can not convince me an “almost exclusive cash shop” …….

Almost exclusive cash shop? you pay if you want, if you can’t live with what they offer you can just use gold you get for free by playing the content.

what? that they make good money? God forbids them for that…

And yes Gw1 is far better than GW2 for my taste, kinda not the point of this thread tho… they added less free content over time than GW2 from my point of view… no cash shop that is probably why.

Almost exclusive cash shop? you pay if you want, if you can’t live with what they offer you can just use gold you get for free by playing the content.

So let’s look at this objectively with reference to GW2:

WOW – your reason for getting bored with WOW applies equally if not moreso to GW2, where the BiS gear at launch was given to you at 80, once Ascended gear was added then it’s a huge grind, far moreso than BiS in WOW, and for a pitiful 5% increase in power whereas in WOW, for less time you could end up with significantly more powerful gear

Tera – ‘eye candy’, which is EXACTLY what GW2’s skin system is all about and largely end-game is about getting fluff like skins

FF – so ‘not revolutionary’ is now a reason to get bored with a game .. okay .. BTW, which FF MMO, there are two

Silk Road, Kotor – never played them so can’t comment

Ragnarok – a generic MMO of its type, not comparable to GW2 in several aspects IMO

Maple Story – yes, a straight-forward Store driving F2P of modern times.

Objectively GW2 is little different in those aspects you say caused you to get bored with those others.

To respond to game specifics even if offtopic (I am trying to keep it on topic T_T)

WOW – you reason for getting bored with WOW applies equally if not moreso to GW2, where the BiS gear at launch was given to you at 80, once AScended gear was added then it’s a huge grind, far moreso than BiS in WOW.

I wasn’t talking about grind, I said that it was too easy to get in WoW, I still don’t have full ascended in GW2, working on it and it’s taking some time … yet ascended is enough if you want fancy stuff well..work for it, completely optional tho.

Tera – ‘eye candy’, which is EXACTLY what GW2’s skin system is all about and largely end-game is about getting fluff like skins

Yes GW2 has lots of eye candy …and I love it… problem with Tera is that it was only Eye candy… game itself was not entertaining imo.

FF – so ‘not revolutionary’ is now a reason to get bored with a game .. okay .. BTW, which FF MMO, there are two

The last one, participated in the beta test and played it some.. but it was too generic ..lacked excitement for me…(still is a personal opinion, game is not bad at all)

Silk Road, Kotor – never played them so can’t comment

Not missing much

Ragnarok – a generic MMO of its type, not comparable to GW2 in several aspects IMO

Even if they are not graphically similar, there’s many similar features or other we can “learn from” so to say … for example the Guild vs Guild action. … crafting system, I like the class progression system (branches)… nothing out of the common, just well implemented.

Maple Story – yes, a straight-forward Store driving F2P of modern times.

yup yup

Edit: dang, with so much editing lost my previous post… was saying that Objectively yes the difference is slight, but that slight difference was the nice free content that was added over time that kept me occupied

I’m sorry,

but as a person who has purchased the game at release, found ZERO content at endgame (no fractals at the time, living story was not here yet, you had Arah and WvW.) then a purchaser of the full-price HoT expansion, I have to say you’re wrong.

all this stuff is not “free”.

Thousands of us have paid for this game, and its expansion, expecting a certain level of completion and content that befitted the original $60+ price tag, and the $40-50~ expansion price tag as well.

You can compare ANY triple-A or even independent title release of the same price and caliber and find that A-net has been playing the “catch-up” game since the beginning. The reason why people are upset is because right now in the MMO market, we have GW2, WoW, and a slurry of other low-tier MMOs as the entire market offering. The content they are releasing in the priced packages they are offering is generally lower than their competitors, and these patches, updates, bug fixes, and balance efforts are things that should have happened before beta was closed. Where are the entire new multiple sets of armor? locked in the gem store, weekly released past the expansion release. Where are the new raids? Oh wait, the FIRST one is being released… post HoT release ….. in an update.

Not to mention the other wings of the raid are where, exactly?

You can walk through maguuma faster than you can walk through from one end of a biome to the end of the same biome in core Tyria.

New “specializations” have one trait line and a handful of new spells, after 3 years of the game being out.

I’m sorry, I’ve played games like EQ 1, Anarchy Online, D&D: [Blank], etc. And those IPs have delivered more content in each subsequent release than the entirety of core GW2 alone, without the need for microtransactions. That’s right, older MMOs have released entire continents worth of content in a single expansion pack and more, followed by the patches, updates, additions, etc. For a lot less than what you guys have been asked to pay for with GW2.

It’s a business platform, not a gaming platform anymore. They want $, not reputable fun.

But that content wasn’t really free over other players were paying for it, in all honesty i would change this thread to, ‘thank you players who keep this game free for me’ since without those players chucking huge amounts of money at ever increasing items the game wouldn’t be around or it would go subscription (more likely the first outcome).

On a side note, you will get infracted for even generically “insulting” someone. They seem to be on point for that stuff recently and a bit to strict in my opinion. Good idea to edit the post, but I think it still could get infracted if someone decides they are offended.
