Seriously. at least the main cities? Please? Ineedmoregliding!

Seconded. Thirded. Fourthed….
In the cities at least, pretty please.
forum dwellers would go nuts about the need to
“grind” to get exp, new swords, new potions etc

if not in the regular maps, cities would be great.
ANet may give it to you.
They can’t do that, especially in cities.
First, probably a lot of terrain not created with gliding in mind ( possibilities to end in places we’re not supposed to go )
Second, masteries are account bound, and cities map completion gives Transmutation charges. Soon enough people would find an optimal route using gliding to spam the cities even faster than they are doing now.

I can attest that Maguuma Jungle has places where gliding was apparently not kept in mind and you’re able to get to where you’re not supposed to be. This is understandable in a terrain as irregular as a jungle. In the far-more regular terrain of the city, it would be easier to cover structures with simple collision boxes. And even in the cities now (and indeed the world) without gliders, it’s possible to get into places where you shouldn’t. This particular point is not an argument against gliders in cities.

Terrain would be a problem in any vanilla map, so not especially in cities.
As to city map completion, maybe make for level 80 only. Many people have city map completion at level 80 and even if they don’t, not many are going to make a char and level it to 80 just for 6 transmutation charges.

Gliding? Fast? Every non-chronomancer mesmer is quicker by foot. ^^
And as for the grove for example, it wouldn’t make a difference if you jump or glide at all if you know the proper places. I mean really… DR wasn’t the city I’d spam for transmutation stones anyway. (Doing daily PvP I have enough of them anyway)
Rata Sum is the fastest one. Doesn’t even take 10 minutes to discover.
I’d love to see gliding in the main cities too, but that would involve a lot of invisibl walls they’d need to put in and other stuff so I don’t think that’d ever happen. Too bad though.

I think ANet should seriously look into allowing flight in the cities for HoT owners. I think it would be a selling point for the expansion for the non-owners to see people gliding around in the cities.
ANet may give it to you.
It would be much loved if gliding one day extended to non-maguuma maps, which I suspect they are planning to do eventually because otherwise, the feature is kind of a waste in the long-term.
I’m afraid I’m not seeing the specifics of where exactly gliding would have a significant impact on how quickly people can do old content. Jumping puzzles, I guess, is one, but that’s all I can think of and in most cases, gliding to the ground is not going to save your jumping puzzle attempt. It just might save you from a few deaths. There is no way to glide upward without an updraft that I know of and jump puzzles are usually designed such that you have to jump steadily upward.
Breaking the map… I can see that maybe being an issue, but it should be fixable. Has a dev actually commented on that or are people just speculating that the maps would not be able to handle it?
Labjax :: think of the LA JP’s with a glider. Then you will know. Also the Pig Iron one or w/e it is called where you go downward across the mine carts. Also a few others were you go up and down… Oh, and do not forget the racing one where you take the bomb through the puzzle from up high to lower through the birds. Imagine that one with a glider! Just… no.
If they were to enable gliding in main Tyria, they would have to make map changes and, within the region around JP’s, disable them so you cannot fly in nor fly while inside the space reserved for it. That would likely mean something akin to a large invisible-wall & ceiling box which is never a fun thing to witness.
Ultimately, we will just have to adapt to the overall theme of each map with its massive event chains (which does show up in the progress bar on the right) as an indicator.
Luckily, I have yet to be a victim of this outside of BWE1 when I tried to glide from the bank/TP of DR down to the repair guy. It only took once to learn my lesson. If I do not see loads of vines and mordrem, I do not use the glider. (Note: there are none in Dry Top and you can not get that high in SW outside the JP or the center fort for it to matter.)

These are not insurmountable obstacles. Don’t allow holding bombs while gliding – that’ll solve griffonrook run. With all jp’s, have a detection box around the start zone and end zone. The jp starts when the player enters the start zone. It ends when they enter the end zone, use their glider or leave the region. If it ends by entering the end zone (without using the glider beforehand) it’s considered a legit win.
This has the added benefit of allowing me to climb up to a high point in a jp and glide off for fun, without any intent of finishing the jp. Options are cool.
EDIT: This has another benefit: it could know when I’m running a jp and tell me how well I’m doing, so I can work on improving. Some kind of stats about my best run and how many times I’ve tried the jp would be fantastic.

Indeed. Invisible walls suck, yet Anet seem to sprinkle them around like candy. But there’s no need for invisible walls, as per my response above.

There you are, being trained to act unnaturally due to a design limitation. You should be free to glide to the repair guy. We all should.

You could still glide from the fort walls in SW. What harm could that do? And dry top would be amazing for gliding. As per my response above, things like the dive achievement would have a start box (at the dive platform) and an end box (at the pool of water) and if you open your glider while going from one to the other it wouldn’t count as a dive.

Eh, a little unintended soft nerfing of a few JPs is not the end of the world, as far as I can tell. The reward for completing them is just an achievement and a few basic chest rewards, right? It’s not like you’re getting a special title or something.
Even if gliding did make some JPs easy, it’s not like you couldn’t still do them the normal way. And as the game grows older, a few soft nerfs of old content isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
People keep asking for gliding in the old world and arguing philosophical reasons for/against when the chief issue, always, is that the maps will not work for gliding. You think that there’s a neat building there? Guess what, it’s a two dimensional facade without a foundation, just floating there, because they didn’t need to create a full building when its front is all anyone can ever see running and jumping around on foot.
They’d need a year or two of applying many resources to literally remaking the world, just like Blizzard did for Cataclysm, before airborne travel could be an option. And I don’t think players want to go a year or two without any content updates just to add a travel mode.
yep, I always hit space bar now when in tyria only to remember “wait…no gliding”.
And I’m JUST training myself to not hit the look key anymore

I have not yet fallen to my death due to a lack of a glider, but I have been in many places since the expansion release where I really wish I had a glider available.
…and maybe some updrafts south of Wizard’s Fief.

A year or two seems like a bit of an exaggeration. It can’t be that hard to remodel / fill out a few buildings, if they are at all organized with their assets.
I’m just not going to buy words like “difficult” or “1-2 years worth of work” unless they come out of the mouth of a 3d modeler who works at Arenanet.
Gravity still works as advertized in WvW.
Give me invisible walls and broken gliding. It’s better than nothing!
Seriously though, I think people would be happy with a gradual rollout too. Just rework maps as part of a living story. Maybe only take on updating one or two every 3 months or so and work towards an eventual global update.
Some is better than none.

I jumped off one of those really massive cliffs in WvW borderlands yesterday.
I went from confusion to shock to laughing like a lunatic all before I hit the ground.
