For months I’ve been keeping track of HOT. MONTHS. ANet preached about GW2 being unlike any MMO we’ve seen before and that community matters.

However, HOT is out and we veterans have to pay ANOTHER $50 for the expansion on top of already having payed for the “full version” of the core game (which for most was 50-60 bucks) without an option to just purchase the expansion for upgrade.

Why should those who have the full version of the core game have to pay ANOTHER $50 for the expansion that includes another “Core game”? It makes no sense.

I’m not asking HOT to be free for vets (although with as much as we paid for the game way back when it would make sense because of how it’s priced now). Too much time and effort has been put into the expansion. I simply ask that you create an option for those who have purchased the core game 6+ months ago to upgrade for $20-$30 without having to basically re-buy the game.

It just doesn’t make any sense to have purchased the game a half a year or more earlier and end up having to basically purchase it a second time.

Didn’t we have this discussion like 4 months ago?
Entitlement generation at it’s best, expansions are always paid in almost-every-mmo out there, you paid $60 or something around 3 years – 6 months ago, you got 3 years – 6 months of play time. That doesn’t entitle you to a $20 upgrade option.
Depending on how much you played that can be less than 5 cents per hour of entertainment. Get over it, game devs need $ to continue producing content.

If Legend of Zelda came out tomorrow, the usual
forum dwellers would go nuts about the need to
“grind” to get exp, new swords, new potions etc

If you already have core game you are just buying expansion. You do not get another core game. Core game free for new player. Old topic. You either buy expansion now for full cost like all other veteran player or wait for sale some time from now.

Also if you did buy core game 6 month ago anet did offer core game refund for people that buy core game between certain date and buy HoT. If you follow HoT like you say might know this. Too late for this offer though.

$60 is the standard retail cost of any game in today’s market.

I have thousands of hours on the Halo franchise, do I deserve Halo 5 at reduced cost?

Let’s say you put ‘worst’ case scenario 100 hours in HoT.

It’s not worth it?

i spent 60 bucks on the game and i got burnt through the story in 9 hours now i gotta deal with bugs (which ok it just launched) working on mastery trait line (already bored with it) and broken PVP also main a thief.

Im not impressed so for and with the fact that raids and guild halls were pushed back i dont know what else to do. just my opinion. wont lie the ending was pretty epic but that was about it for me.

Most mmo and/or non mmo game Expansions/DLC you have to pay for.
If you dont want to pay $50 for HoT dont buy it or wait for it to drop in price at a later time or go on sale.

MMO’s tend to charge full price for their expansions; look at WoW and its expansions that start off around the 50 – 60 dollar mark. FFXIV cheapened their expansion, but they’re still recovering from XIV 1.0 and are doing anything they can to retain a loyal consumer base (that and they have absolute control of their game, whereas Anet goes through NCSoft).

This was discussed 4 months ago and hasn’t changed.

This is a business, these people don’t eat from our love and affection.
Buy it, or stop playing until it’s cheaper.
But the price wont go away in the forseable future.

expansions are always paid in almost-every-mmo out there,

No they aren’t.

Most MMORPGs, the grand majority do expansions as automatic. You don’t have to pay for them.

GW2, WoW, and SWTOR are the few that are charging for expansion content, most other MMORPGs DO NOT.

I’ll just quote myself from an identical thread from someone else who was questioning the price.

This will be their ongoing way to sell the game. This one has the base game inside. The next one will have the base game and HoT free with the new expansion. The one after that will have the base game and 2 expansions free with the new expansion.
They want to bring new people in, new people to replace veterans who no longer play and to increase the game’s population. A game that has too high a price-wall can’t attract new people in the numbers wanted. Not with so much competition from the free to play and single player games.
The game is priced for the expansion. The free base game and the succeeding expansions inside in the future are not for us vets. They are there to keep the price-wall as low as possible to bring in new people.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

There’s your error right there. The vast majority of MMOs are not tripleA titles, nor do triple A titles account for the assumed majority of game actions and behaviors.

You can’t assume your small world considerations are applicable to the entire genre.

WoW is the anomily, GW2 is a Buy to play, most of the market are not like these.

Vindictus recieved a new expansion this past few months ago, TERA received a huge expansion as well. Eden Eternal was revamped and expanded, the list goes on and on with various titles that get consistent updates.

Triple A is not even close to the market standard for MMOs.

So you want to compare a triple A tittle to any other title out there?
There’s your error right there, those games don’t require an investment big enough to require a paid expansion, if that’s your cup of tea then you should stick to those.
My question still stands, please name a AAA title that released a free expansion this year.
You won’t, why? because there’s no such thing, low cost games can afford to do that, expensive ones can’t, your job as a player is to decide which one’s for you.
Another example: blizzard can’t afford to release a free diablo expansions, while other free action games like MU can. Is it ok for people to go whine about diablo’s price? no, because the game requires a big investment and without that price it wouldn’t be viable.

If Legend of Zelda came out tomorrow, the usual

i don’t think you truly know what you are getting to be complaining. look at how much you get. 9-12 hours of pve content. wasn’t this free in living story? oh no, wait, you also get a new class – aka revenant! now it’s worth that price. go and buy it and join us in this new adventure. you might enjoy the guild hall. wait, is that new? i thought it existed in guild wars 1. shouldn’t veterans of guild wars 1 get more entitlement?

Are people legitimately complaining about buying a large chunk of new content? Must be the MMO kids that never played sub-based MMOs before. Be thankful GW2 doesn’t have a sub or a P2W cash shop. This game has a hell of a lot of content for its meager asking price.

i agree with you comment above but the for 9 hours of content (which is how long it took me on my thief and could have prolly done it faster with another class) and a new class i dont feel that this expack was worth the 60 bucks i spent on it. im already burnt out. The pvp is lacking atm and i know it will get better in time. but 60 bucks really? i would feel better if the xpack was 20 bucks or even 30. I mean hell we got more content with free world event patches.

as it stands now, my call is to wait on it, yep might not be the first person to get the brand new profession, brand new specialization and brand new mastery but this is not the kind of game that you can rush it, it’s a marathon not a sprint kinda game. So what if you are late by a few month, you’ll catch up soon enough.

Considering the bug/ crash/ things to improve, things to balance. I rather hold my money till they actually gives me a good product for me to yet spent again another dollar on it.
