Q:

I’m currently sitting at 4 stacks of Tomes of Knowledge and would like to know if I should save these for something (besides levelling a rev) when HoT comes out, or if I should just go ahead and use these to farm keys.

I don’t know of any alternative use for Tomes except leveling. Is there something coming in the future? Maybe, but nothing I’ve heard about.

Can use them for spirit shards can’t you?

Is that more profitable than using them for key farming?

you can’t (for spirit shard that is, since you no longer gain anything when you level up at level 80), but I believe they will be usefull for masteries helping you filling the experience tracks.

No core profession should be balanced around an optional elite specialization.

Sorry, wrong on both points. Tomes do give a spirit shard to level 80s and they will not be of use in training Mastery tracks.

“The masteries seen in the demo are just the tip of what masteries will be available at launch, and the team will have more surprises for players. We wanted to know if all those consumables, like Tomes of Knowledge and Writs of Experience, would help players unlock all of these masteries faster. The short answer is that they won’t. The experience bar is going away and is being replaced by the mastery training bar. This training bar is in no way tied to experience, but fills up by going out and doing stuff in the world. So any item that gives you experience won’t help you train masteries.”

Grants one character level if below level 80 or one spirit shard if level 80.

So do tomes do anything once HoT comes out?

AFAIK you can change them directly for an amount of Spirit Shards. I don’t remember where, sorry.

Just what they do now. Level a char up to level 80 or give spirit shards to a level 80.

If it were me with 1000 tomes, I would hold on to them for a while. If people are getting less spirit shards to spend than they were getting skill points, it might become more worthwhile to promote mats in the Mystic Forge or to make weapons in the Mystic Forge.

If you want to do key runs instead, 30 runs (about the low average to get one ticket) will use up 240 tomes. So 1k tomes will get you about 4 keys, if RNG is kind to you. If you sell the weapons right away at about 100 gold each, that’s 400 gold. However I’ve seen people say on the forum they get one gold per spirit shard doing promotions, so if that’s true and you can get that, then 1k tomes is worth 1000 gold (again, if RNG is kind to you and you do your research correctly). If however you wait to sell the weapons until they reach 250 gold then 4 tickets will get you 1000 gold, the same amount currently as doing promotions.

So, it depends on what you want to do and how much waiting or research you do.

Its true that you can make great gold from MF promotion. I’ve taken advantage of green wood planks → soft wood planks that topped out at 4 gold per skill point. But guess what. IT SUCKS! Its boring as all get out. Going thorugh 1000 spirit shards will take SO long. Lastly, I found that the best conversion rate tends to come from the end product selling at a high price. That means you run the risk of being undercut and having your items sit on the TP. In my case, those soft wood planks sat for 6 MONTHS. They did sell though. Currently i’ve got 1000s of cotton scraps for sale which ave been up for 7 months. Im’ undercut by an entire silver, so i dont imagine they are going to sell anytime soon.
Bottom line is I dont know what to do with my spirit shards either. What I have been using them for is making legendaries and ascended gear. those take up quite a bit. I still have a ton though. I wonder how the overall rate of spirit shard acquisition will compare to old skill point acquisition.
