I went to go change the stats of some ascended armor I got from boxes to the Thackeray’s stats. I made the insignia, had it in my inventory, but when I went to the mystic forge it wouldn’t pick up the insignia. Is it not possible or is this a bug?

just to be sure, you had an EXOTIC insignia right?

Thack’s stats are account bound.

if you didn’t make the exotic insignia again already, send in a support ticket – ask them to swap the asc for the exotic. They may be willing to help you.

Good idea! I forgot about that — I’ve seen post from other players saying that ANet was happy to help with a polite request to help out.

That would be ridiculous to assume, since the only difference to the stats in crafting the Ascended armor are the Exotic insignias used to make the Ascended insignias in the first place. That’s basically what you’re swapping.
