I don’t post typically but I keep finding that all of my characters run out of bag space and the bank is tiny. Is the deal that you just have to fork over real money to have a reasonable amount of space? How do people manage their bag space?

You can get up to 100 bag slots just from using 20 bag slots.
General way to handle things is asking yourself “do I REALLY need this?” and then either put it away, keep it or discard it.
Having some more bank space definitely helps though, so does more material storage. If it helps, you can buy gems with ingame gold once you saved up enough and feel like you can “waste” it on the luxury it offers.

I bought a second tab of bank space and it also filled up. I have about 100 slots and they too fill up. It’s a pain digging through all of this and managing the full everything.

I bought a lot of of extra bank tabs and a few bag slots back when the conversion was 50 silver for 100 gems. My sister only started playing the game after the game went free 2 play and i don’t know how she will manage her bag space, because it really is extremely expensive now to buy these things,

Have some strong rules of thumb. Sell or salvage everything unless you have a really good reason for doing otherwise. If you find yourself wanting more space, question whether the stuff you are keeping is really important to your enjoyment of the game.

My rule of thumb is to have 60 bank slots minimum at the start of every ‘week’ of play and at least 50 slots free in inventory before starting a meta or other sort of high-loot activity. That ensures that I don’t spend that much time managing inventory while I play. Valuable things go into the bank to ‘process’ later; everything else gets salvaged as I go. (During Halloween & Wintersday, I salvage and sell a lot more, since space is more precious.)

tl;dr most people don’t have a problem with too little space; they have trouble deciding to let go of things.

Different ways to get more space:
- infinite salvage kit: Normally I used to carry 15-20 salvage kits with me, now I only have my mystic one and the infinite one. As I placed it into the shared inventory slot, I have like 15-20 extra inventory slots on all my characters now = totally worth it.
- bag slots from gemstore: If you use 20-slot bags and still have trouble, this can be an option. You need gems.
- mule characters: You always have at least one character you only use rarely. Equip it with 20-slot bags (15 slot bags are a lot cheaper) and use this character as a mule for all the stuff that does not fit in your bank.
- guildbank: these days no longer a good option, back in the old days it was quite cheap. Still it is possible to create at least the first tier (50 slots) without aquiring a guildhall afaik. Not cheap and you sacrifice one of your precious 5 guild-slots.
- clean your bank: I do it once a week and it kinda saves me 2 slots each time. Some things can be sold/salvaged, others can be stored on a mule – e.g. seasonal stuff like continue coins from SAB. If you pick the stuff up once in a while, you start to realize wether you need it or not. If it lays in the bank untouched, you may ignore it for months.

tl;dr
If you have lots of space, you use lots of space.

You can max your bank tabs and bag slots on each character without spending any RL cash. What you cannot do is accomplish that without farming a bunch of gold.

If that does not work for you, then your options are RL money, or deciding that you don’t have to keep as much as you’re keeping.

Bingo! I haven’t spent a cent of real money for more bank and bag slots. And running Lab can easily get you enough candy corn to convert to cobs to get Pumpkin 20 space bags without much effort.

Veteran players came up with ingenious solutions for storing items way before HoT expansion. Create your own personal guild bank + Buy character slots from gemstore and create characters that you can use as your storage as 4x 20slot bags will give you 100storage each. If you do go for character idea you should consider creating a character that you may think about playing with in the future as older characters get better birthday gifts.
But with HoT expansion creating your personal guild bank storage is very hard now. You need to spend significant amount of gold and materials to enable guild bank and upgrades to get full 250slot storage.
Alternatively, you can buy 14 Bank tab. 30slot for each bank tab. We also use permanent bank access express with shared inventory slot making this combination the ultimate convenience for players with multiple professions. This combination allows you to access your bank anywhere and everywhere. No need to divide your foods amongst 9 of your professions.

I’ve used my spare character slots to make 100 slot banks

My fractal adventures pretty much spat out free 20 slot bags.

Post a picture of your inventory so people can help.

The first pic is my ranger’s inventory. It’s one of my characters with the least space and most clutter as I haven’t tried organizing it in years. You can add about 10-15 spaces for salvage kits and mining tools as I don’t need them anymore. This would amount to about 35-40 free spaces assuming 18-20 slot bags.

The second pic is my Revenant’s inventory. Being relatively newly made, I don’t have any alternate equipment sets so the inventory space is minimal.

But in general, salvage, salvage, and salvage even more. Also, I use invisible bags for stuff I want to stay put and not get accidentally vendored.

Also don’t open chests or bags until you are done for the day.

Of course, as for the gem store (just convert gold to gems over time)

  • Copper Salvage kit
  • Extra Bag Slot (Going from 100 to 120 is a pretty good boost, from 120 to 140 less so. I don’t think it’s needed especially since this upgrade is per character, skip if you have many characters. )
  • Shared Inventory Slot (if you play a few characters, skip if you have only 1-2)
  • Bank Tab for hoarding purposes; honestly just sell most of it until you can afford the rest.
  • Watchwork Mining Pick

In roughly that order.

Also note that quite a few spaces are taken up by siege blueprints, so if you don’t bother with WvW (and it’s likely someone else will place siege anyways), these spaces are effectively free anyways.

This is not directed at anyone in this thread.

Hoarders are everywhere in this game (my wife is one of them). Constantly running out of bag space. Taken every storage slot in multiple guild vaults and are always bemoaning the lack of space. She and I have played since launch, have roughly the same playing hours, same number of legendaries, characters etc. but I have fifty open slots on each character and only use four bank tabs (though I did buy a few storage expanders). As a game hoarder, she just won’t sell anything.

Until they can overcome their hoarding behavior, they will always be complaining about space.

i have 10 bank tabs, 140 slots in inventory on my main and a fully unlocked personal guild bank

personal guild bank is the most achievable if you are dead set on not spending any irl money although you probably wont manage to get it fully unlocked solo

Most wanted in game additions: Beastiary, readable books
