I know I’m late to the party here. Our PC crashed over a year ago and we just got it ready to play GW2 again. We have 6 level 80 characters and I’d like to get the expansion.

But here is my concern. I read a review where the reviewer was impressed, but noticed that just 2 weeks after launch there were not always enough players around to complete the big “events” that are needed to get mastery and specialization advancement. Its apparently not like Tyria experience, with hearts everywhere that I can complete on my own. Apparently its more like Silverwastes in this regard?

Anyway, now that HOT has been out a long time, is it going to seem like a ghost town in these starting areas and hard for me to grind XP? I really want to get the weapon specializations and gliding mastery, but not if it is nigh impossible because it depends too much on other players.

Please advise on whether or not you believe this to be a legitimate concern, or what Arenanet may have changed since the review in question to make things easier for “loners” like me Thanks.

Gliding mastery is easy to get – you train up masteries just by getting XP and just like the rest of GW2 everything gives XP. It’s quicker if you do the big event chains but you’ll get there either way. You can also train masteries in the new Living World maps.

As for the other stuff whenever I go back to the HoT maps there are plenty of people around. You might need to use the LFG tool to find an organised map for the meta-event chains and ask in map chat or LFG to get a group for the more out of the way hero points, but it’s definitely possible to do them all.

There are plenty of people around doing things in the HOT maps. People who say they can’t find anyone don’t try. Just use LFG to get a populated map and you will be fine.

Anyone who said that two weeks in didn’t know how to use the LFG tool or didn’t know how to be where stuff was going on when it’s going on. I complete stuff in HoT on new characters all the time. I help show new guildies around HoT a couple of times a week. There’s plenty of people doing HoT content.

You will need to rely on LFG to hop onto more populated maps.
Just like what you do with SW and other world boss events.

I play off and on. As of late I’ve begun to play more and have delved into HoT content. I also play at “off” times (2 AM to 6 AM) due to my work schedule. I can confidently say that there are always groups farming meta-events, people looking to get achievements, and in general a stable population. I’m sure it’s bigger during normal hours, but the point is there has never been a lack of players in my experience.

I find the idea of a geocentric universe sexually arousing.

Before you buy the expansion …

…you have to realise that you are really buying a DLC.

Oh and as for the episodes for Living Story 3 you may have missed if you didnt log in whilst they were on. Sorry but that isnt included, if you missed it then you will have to pay for each missed episode with gems in the gem store.

Complained about WvW before it became cool.
I used to be a PvE player like you, then I played Guild Wars 2

If the OP missed any, it would only be the one, Episode One. Episode Two is still live, and free of charge.

Just to note OP, that if I can remember correctly the first 2 or 3 weeks featured a unique problem with Anet’s megaserver system in which it was creating too many instances of the map making it so there would be too few people on those maps. Once this was fixed the maps were packed and everyone was playing.

Currently all of the meta maps still do very well, albeit a few of the Hero Points might be difficult to do without 2 or 3 others. If you plan on doing the final map Dragons Stand just remember to look into lfg before the map starts as groups organize before the event starts.

Happy exploring, the new maps are surely amazing.

The real answer is I think a little bit of both.

Of course when the expansion was launched everybody was playing in the new maps. In my guild I used to see about 10-20 guildmate on each of the new map and maybe 10-15 players anywhere else. Today, we are more spread out over all the maps of the game and it’s the same with everybody.

But there is still people playing those map. Enough to complete most of what you would want to complete. The specialisation, the weapons and xp won’t be a problem at all. You might have problem with some hero point that need a small group of people, but there is more than needed so you can skip those if you don’t want to wait for people to help you or find people with the LFG.

A problem with the expansion is that the new maps rely heavily on the LFG system, but they didn’t improve it. If you know how to use it, then you probably won’t have any problem. But it’s not obvious that you need to use it or how to use it properly in the game. So a lot of people just move around in an empty map, frustrating themselves, while there might be 2-3 map almost full that you could joint.
