Beta Key / Portal Drops
I’ve seen numerous people get three drops, while some of us who have been grinding the zone, have… well, as you may have guessed, none.
Why does it matter?
They don’t steal a drop from anyone else nor do multiple drops mean less total invites.
In fact this was probably the safest way to do it, because coding something that shuts off the drop after you got it the first time could lead to very dangerous bugs.

If you flip a coin twice. The first flip has no effect on the outcome of the second. It’s the same here. Also this is the 3rd-6th thread about the same topic from people who don’t understand probability.
Your not the programmer that sit in front of the computer doing the work.
It’ll probably take more time than you think to implement it.
In fact this was probably the safest way to do it, because coding something that shuts off the drop after you got it the first time could lead to very dangerous bugs.
oh you mean like what is happening now with people getting as many as 8 portals ! (sarcasm)
Sure, some may say it doesn’t affect anyone else, (sarcasm they prob already have their portal)
But all this [censored] aside my point is this:
A very minuscule percentage of people getting 8 copies of an item so many are after with such a low probability of dropping seems to indicate a very LARGE issue with a.net RNG systems.
Now come and tell me it is working as intended !!!
Just playing devil’s advocate here, but what if they DID make a boo boo with the code that suppose to make sure people only got 1 portal, and instead what the code does is keep giving them portal after portal ?

Access to the Beta stress test received a lot of complaints. Greatest of them was the language and how it was not earned. In the end, the poor RNG distribution of these portals pretty much equals that of the Newsletter invites. When someone can get a Portal within 20 minutes and another not get one after 40+ hours, then nothing is really being earned at all.
Expecting complaints now that the Portal drops are being removed.
Ok, so it is working as intended right ! [it’s not but let’s assume it is]
Let’s swap beta portal for the word precursor and now tell me the RNG system is working as intended !!!
I’m not here saying I want my beta portal or precursor, I farmed for it and didn’t drop that’s fine.
My point is:
If I was a DEV and one of my most precious items with some of the lowest drop rates in the game was being dropped to the same players 8 times. I would revisit my code cause there is most likely an elephant size bug hiding inside it.
Would I tell the player base ? prob not !
damage control right there just by saying nothing.

What designer thought it was a good idea for people who can only use one portal on their account to get multiple portal drops?
I got two, the second one doesn’t matter at all.
It didn’t stop anyone else getting one. Its worth 25 silver to an NPC, so no big deal.
Multiple portal drops don’t matter one bit, it was probably just easier for them to do it this way.
In fact this was probably the safest way to do it, because coding something that shuts off the drop after you got it the first time could lead to very dangerous bugs.

Good job, not understanding what he said and just repeating yourself.
Sure, some may say it doesn’t affect anyone else, (sarcasm they prob already have their portal)
You mean how Gaile has confirmed it (I think at least twice), and it’s how all other loot in the game works (besides, again basic probability)?
But all this [censored] aside my point is this:
A very minuscule percentage of people getting 8 copies of an item so many are after with such a low probability of dropping seems to indicate a very LARGE issue with a.net RNG systems.

Yes, that’s exactly how random distributions work. Guess what, there’s a chance that someone grinded without sleep and still wouldn’t get one, and a chance that someone can get it after 5min on their first kill. And with the tens of thousands of players we have, both are bound to happen multiple times; same as people getting more than one stone.
Just playing devil’s advocate here, but what if they DID make a boo boo with the code that suppose to make sure people only got 1 portal, and instead what the code does is keep giving them portal after portal ?
To go along with your ill conceived notion. If that was the case, on day 2-3 when someone reported that they got 2+ stones, they would have “quickly” resolved the issue. There is no benefit to them having less people in the beta. And as people have pointed out numerous times, in numerous threads there is absolutely no reason for them to have coded it the way you wanted them to other than to placate yourself. It is extra work for no benefit. Why do you think they have a vendor value instead of some item you “consume” to have your account flagged? They planned for people to get more than one of them and gave them a value so you get a tiny bonus (25s) for getting another one to drop. Where in this game does one person getting loot change another person’s chances of getting the same thing, it doesn’t exist.
Please go learn about basic probability before you say that things can’t possibly be working as intended. For example, there was a thread years ago during Dragon Bash of some guy dropping $100 on the gem store dragon coffers to try to get a skin or something and failing. He cried outrage over it, because he didn’t understand basic odds and was willing to dump money on something 1-2 hours old without thinking about it.
Anet is monitoring the drop rates, because after the first day they increased the odds of them dropping. They most likely have a target number of accounts they want to have beta access via portal drops, and plan to fill the rest with the newsletter subs.
In fact this was probably the safest way to do it, because coding something that shuts off the drop after you got it the first time could lead to very dangerous bugs.

Sure, ill tell you, it is working as intended, in fact i would be more concerned if something like that did NOT happen, is what you call outliers. Go learn some basic statistics before you start complaining about it
By the same measure of statistics you claim the system is working as intended.
It is also showing that it is NOT and something is off.
You are just content ignoring what is staring you in the face.

did you read my WHOLE post, all 3 of the lines? it is the very concept of outliers, and if that did NOT happen then something would indeed be wrong with it… jeez do i really have to repeat myself?
Lol. The amount of multiple Portal Stones one player obtained goes up with every thread. Some people must have truly farmed for them, just to irritate others. Haha.
What some of you are missing out on, is that once a player got a portal he/she should have been removed from the player pool.
What some of you are missing out on, is that once a player got a portal he/she should have been removed from the player pool.
And then that system bugs out and people get removed from the pool without having gotten a portal. Something that would be basically impossible to discover due to the low droprate and thus someone might spend hours upon hours without even a CHANCE of getting the drop.
Building a system like that for might very well be a single event when it is quite possible that it could lead to quite bad bugs is stupid. Simple as that.

and ironically enough those bugs would actually make a lot of those conspiracy theories circling around true

I don’t think any drop in the game works like that, meaning they’d have to program a way to stop the item from dropping for people that already have one which would cost time (no clue how much as I can’t program and don’t have access to the game’s code) and give absolutely no benefits whatsoever except for stopping these nonsense threads from showing up all the time.
You are right, no drop in game WORKED like that before, but this is a special item that is for beta only. All other drops in game will drop after portals are removed from game.
Here’s how it was advertised:
Starting tomorrow, April 28, heroes adventuring in the Maguuma Wastes have a chance to find a mysterious portal to the heart of the Maguuma Jungle. Looting one of these special trophy items grants you access to the next Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns™ PvE closed beta event!
I’ll point out one bit of that section: heroes have A chance to find A mysterious portal.
A chance to find A portal. Not multiple chances to find multiple portals.
This is why we complain, why we post “nonsense” threads as you claim. Anet should have been a lot more clearer in the detail. The reason they haven’t been is because they didn’t think that this would happen.
This is confounded by the fact Anet have not responded to any of the threads.
So I fully understand and agree with everyone who says it should be one portal and one portal only. It’s how it was advertised. So if you want to say we are talking nonsense then I’m afraid (that after you read the announcement for it) that it is you talking nonsense.
If it had been advertised as many chances to get many portals there may have been moaning, but at least t would have been expected.
Really?
There is nothing at all in that statement that says anything about “a chance to only ever get a single portal”.
A chance refer to the fact that it is not guaranteed. A portal refers to the fact that you can only ever get one portal per chance. Not that there is only ever one chance to get a portal and that you can only ever get one portal.
It all seems to come down to not fully understanding the language used. Which isn’t really all that uncommon seeing as many of us does not have English as our native language.

Finding multiple portals is irrelevant; there is no fixed limit on the number of portals that can be allocated. The more people loot, the more portals are handed out, no matter what. Worrying about people who got multiple portals is based on a misunderstanding of what is going on – they are not assigning a number of portals, they are setting a drop rate.

Perhaps, reading the threads with an ArenaNet Dev icon next to the title would alleviate your fears that ‘Anet has not responded to any of the threads’. In fact, an ArenaNet representative created a thread, for the sole purpose of responding to Portal concerns.

Good luck.
RNG is your friend. Any suggestion to the contrary is treason.

please be consistent, if you go by that logic (which is totally not how the English language works, but lets assume for a second it does), then you would only ever get a chance on the very first event or mob (whatever happens first) you kill/complete in SW or DT, and if you didn’t get anything there… well tough luck, you want get another chance
Regarding players who recieve multiple drops, Anet has already come out and said its a limitation in their sytem. Let this be a lessoned learned not to design beta key drops this way in the future.
Let this be a lessoned learned not to design beta key drops this way in the future.
The playerbase is the one that needs to be taught a lesson here. We have people literally asking for a string of code that stops multiple drops because it hurts their precious feelings.
Maybe we should do the same to Precursors; you can’t thread through Lion’s Arch without getting triggered by all those shiny weapons these days.
When do these portals stop dropping?
When do these portals stop dropping?
noone knows, they only said it would be running for at least a week, well geuss what that about 2 weeks ago and it still running, so basically when ANet deem they got enough players for the beta

They did say this weekend was the last for it, so it is quite likely that they will stop dropping with the patch today. At the very latest it will stop on Friday.

Well RNG is RNG :P some get 100000 some get 0. It depend on ur luck. Well today guy dropped it so i guess it is not disabled yet.
