No idea why but I thought everyone who pre-ordered got one, but it turns out it’s only for veteran’s and those who spend £80 on the expansion which I can’t do. Am I alone in thinking a character shot should come baseline for anyone who buys the expansion? Usually this is the case when an expansion adds a new class to play. It’s just a bit frustrating having to delete a character to make room for the Revenant

Here are the qualifications:

Free character slot

If you registered your core Guild Wars 2 game before January 23, 2015 and register a pre-purchase serial code for Heart of Thorns any time before the expansion is released, you’ll receive a free character slot! Once you apply a pre-purchase serial code, you’ll be eligible for the slot regardless of where you bought the core game.

If the serial code you used to register the core game came from a retail vendor (rather than buy.guildwars2.com or in-game) and was applied to your account between January 23, 2015 and June 16, 2015, you’ll also be eligible for a free character slot if you apply a Heart of Thorns pre-purchase serial code before the expansion release.

All accounts that become eligible by July 9 will have their free character slot applied by July 10. Eligible accounts that are upgraded with a pre-purchase serial code after July 10 will receive their slots on a weekly basis after that.

If you have a new account, then you got 5 character slots.

Yeah I know mate, but I’m pretty skint right now, I only have so much spare cash for my gaming hobby and a few big titles hit me at the same (Heart of Thorns, Uncharted Collection, Witcher III expansion etc). I just wondered if others thought the same as me or am I being unreasonable in thinking a free slot should be baseline for the expansion given they’ve added a class? I guess I’m just a bit bummed as I thought I was ready for the expansion and only just found out I wasn’t thanks to a Reddit comment.

All I can say is, check with support they can see when you last loged in and if you havent been playing during the time limit for getting the refund, maybe you could get one anyway. ( since you were clearly eligable for it)

Yeah that’s what I’ve done, it can’t hurt.

I agree that it was rather strange they did not include 1 character slot as a base reward, however sadly I have seen the marketing of this company for a while now and I actually prepared for the worst. Back when they announced the expansion a part of the community got a bit kittened off that the core game became free and veterans got nothing so they changed it so those would receive a free character slot. Since I am a veteran I got my slot that way, but I can definetely understand your situation. If I were in your position I would feel the same way.

Yeah, but that’s a bit different imo.

Folks are buying an expansion that comes with one new class. Any long term player is likely to have max level toons in all their existing slots and will be desperate to try the new class. Sure, those players will probably have enough gold to buy a new slot with gems but I’m thinking back to the expansions for GW1 where you typically got 2 new classes and 2 or 4 slots, depending upon whether you added it to your existing account or opted to use it standalone.

That’s the situation I’m in. My slots are full but my account isn’t quite old enough to be considered “veteran” so I don’t get a slot by default for my Revenant. It just seems odd that they expect you to buy the expansion to play the new class, then expect you to fork over more cash for a class slot to play it.

Customer support got back to me and asked for all my details so hopefully I’ll get either the core game refunded or just a character slot as that’s all I really want anyway.

Customer support wouldn’t help me as I bought the expansion from Amazon, even though they’re an official reseller which seems really unfair to me. So I guess my options are give them more money to be able to enjoy the content I bought the expansion for or delete a character.

I bought the core game directly from Anet, and that’s what would have been refunded, but because I bought the expansion from Amazon they wouldn’t, which is silly as they’re an official reseller.

And I don’t have anywhere near enough gold sadly.

Then they may have misunderstood what you wanted a refund for, possibly. They might have thought you were wanting a refund for HoT and not the base game.

A character slot currently costs ~160g. It’s really not that difficult.

Veterans got lots of content and enjoyment that new players either missed out on or must slowly redo. Your opinion is subjective, as is mine, but if one compare this mmorpg and anet vs other mmorpgs and companies theres little to complain about in terms of money. Personally id say its a pretty darn good deal with 50 euros for three years of free content and experience new players never will get, and im fine with them getting the core game for free as it would only hinder anet if new players had to buy the game for 100 euros and more as they add expansions. That doesnt make sense and would hinder growth. Theres lots of stuff ingame that makes us vets stay ahead.

We were given one slot per race to experience the different personal stories, not one slot per profession to try every profession.

Save some gold and convert to gems, the OP can buy a character slot without spending any cash. It’s another option most games don’t give you.
