Buying HoT for less than $50?
No there is no option and the price is fair considering no monthly fees for this game.
The price will undoubtably drop eventually. Since it isn’t even out yet it still has the new expansion price.
ANet may give it to you.
people still complaining about this, if money was such an issue, should have just saved when game was announced.
current pre-purchase price is for beta testing and bonuses. i do believe after launch GW2:HoT will be available at lower price.
I saw one pre-order site, but not sure about the legitimacy : https://www.g2a.com/guild-wars-2-heart-of-thorns-cd-key-preorder-eu-na.html
Archeage = Farmville with PK
Standard Edition boasts “includes GW2 base game”
This will be their ongoing way to sell the game. This one has the base game inside. The next one will have the base game and HoT free with the new expansion. The one after that will have the base game and 2 expansions free with the new expansion.
They want to bring new people in, new people to replace veterans who no longer play and to increase the game’s population. A game that has too high a price-wall can’t attract new people in the numbers wanted. Not with so much competition from the free to play and single player games.
The game is priced for the expansion. The free base game and the succeeding expansions inside in the future are not for us vets. They are there to keep the price-wall as low as possible to bring in new people.
ANet may give it to you.
You can buy just the expansion by purchasing it through the in-game store.
Other official retailers have already had the expansion on sale. Yesterday for example, one of the UK retailers had it down to $35 US, but sold out within hours.

Which retailer was it? It’s not cool to have a game on sale before its launch imo

Various (official) retailers have had the game on sale so far, most of which I’ve seen have been EU.
The sale yesterday was at funstockdigital.co.uk. They have it for 14% off, plus a special promotion for pre-ordering/purchasing which takes off another 25%. Under the official retailers, you can see them listed as GetGamesDirect under UK/Digital. Sales like this generally popup on reddit.
