If I buy the HoT expanison in the USA and give the code to my friend in Canada, will he be able to use it?

I believe so, so long as you buy from the site or a physical retailer (I don’t know about buying through the gem store). There is no region locking any more but the US and Canada were always in the same region anyway.

A friend of mine got me Heart of Thorns from the official website and you basically get a serial code that they can send to someone else to add to their account. My friend lives in the same region though so I don’t know if that would make a difference, but I assume Canada and USA are considered the same region since you both play on north american servers.

I doubt it would be an issue, OP. I bought GW1 EotN for a Canadian friend of mine as a Brit and there were no problems, just as I could choose an American server to play on in GW2 despite being European and paying with pounds sterling. A sale is a sale in the eyes of ANet and if there’s nothing to say you can’t then you’d have a strong case for a refund if it wasn’t possible.

Since Guild Wars 2 has a quite big community and it’s getting even bigger with HoT i honestly think that Anet should show some support to their Canadian and Australian players which as far as i know they are quite a lot (including me).
