So I have some good friends who just started the game and currently have F2P accounts. They may purchase HoT in the future but my question is this:

If I purchase HoT and let’s say I specialize my ranger into a druid (or specialize one of my other characters) or I make revenant, how will this affect my ability to play with F2P players? Will I be able to play with F2P players in GW2 core areas that are accessible without HoT with professions that are HoT exclusive?

I just want to ensure that my purchase of HoT isn’t suddenly going to put me in position where I can no longer play with my friends who haven’t bought HoT.

Yes, players that can not access Elite Specializations will see, and play, with Heart of Thorns purchasers.

If you purchase HoT, you get access to everything; core Tyria and Heart of Maguuma. If you do not purchase HoT, you have either full access or limited access to core Tyria.

Your purchase allows you to get into the new maps, have the Revenant and have the elite specializations. It’s not going to bar you from the original part of the map no matter what profession or specialization. (How would the Revenant level to 80 after char creation if it couldn’t be in the old world?)

Oh I get that I’ll be able to go into the original maps. But then does that mean that my F2P and GW2 core friends will just see me running around with classes and professions that they have no access to? And will I for sure be able to play with people who have not bought HoT? That’s my concern.

Yes. If you are on your Revenant in queensdale then they will see you. There isn’t going to be old maps that only HoT people are in. Everyone will still be together on the old maps.
