What do you expect them to say?

The reality is the player base has plummeted and they’re desperately hoping folks that wandered off to play the parade of great games that came out over the last 45 days or so will come back (hint: a lot won’t). As long as they’re clinging to that hope they certainly can’t say things might not have gone how they like and they can’t really make good calls about how to reshape the game because they can’t admit publicly or privately that some of the blame is on themselves and not just a market filled with shiny new toys. Because that would take an honest look in the mirror and those are hard.

If you’re a broad and regular reader of these forums you’ll notice posting has also plummeted. The year of hype has become the 4 maps of reality and some really questionable balancing decisions. Roy has moved on from sheltering the Warrior from a righteous beating with the nerf bat to his new golden child, the OP Revenant of OPness. The economic rebalancing served some well but it also made a lot of people decide ‘screw it I’m out.’ Not with big showy I’m leaving posts but with the far deadlier silence. And really ANet is pretty much clueless about what to do about it because they don’t have exit surveys or really any surveys to ask people how they’re relating to the game.

Me personally, I don’t find the new rewards appealing so there’s not a lot to struggle for. The bladed armor is hideous, the leyline armor is meh, the Legendary armor is STUPIDLY ornate — because apparently the ANet character artists simply have zero appreciation for clean lines. It’s like someone took nice armor and then vomited spikes and squiggles all over it until you can’t see it anymore. The new stat combos are almost interesting, but their also gated behind an order of magnitude more fiddly nonsense than the established sets. Because These days the do want you to grind not just for cosmetics (a deal I’m totally ok with) but for mechanical advantage too (a social contract I can get in any of a dozen other MMOs, most of which made that arrangement clear up front).

I’d like to care about masteries, but the terrible piece of design that is the CoH exploit-we-call-acceptable pretty much just spits on anyone who plays the game as intended rather than sitting mashing 1 at a broken spawn point. Its pretty much an accelerated version of Liadri was awesome till someone found an exploit that ruined the sense of accomplishment. Only this took hours instead of months to break.

I log in. I do my dailies. I get my laurels and my AP. And I hope that maybe next year they’ll put out something I want to exert myself for. Cosmetic or mechanical.

I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”

Kind of strange that the Devs should be more active on an outside site then on Arena net’s official site for the game.
but we know from GW1 that the devs don’t give a crap about what we think.
You have to belong to the small faction that play PvP with the dev team to make your voice heard.

Sadly the 64 bit client doesn’t help everyone as people are still reporting crashes when they use it. It’s a memory usage problem, all the 64 bit client does is delay crashing by giving the game access to more memory to flounder in, so it’s more a band-aid than an actual solution.

Re the economy, they told us before HoT launched that the economy would be unstable for a period of time and then settle down. So the two things you’ve comment on, they’ve acted/commented on.

Price of T6 mats, for example is down almost across the board. People see what they want to see.

Oh you’re on a mac, that explains everything.

Anet is talking to us, they’re just not talking to you specifically.

Did Anet address the complaints about elites specialization points needed? Yes.
DId Anet address the complaints about hero point difficult? Yes, they made changes.
Did Anet address the complaint about the poison gating in the HoT story? Yes.
Did they address the complaints about Fractal rewards? Yes.
Did they tell the WvW they’re still working on a solution but it’s coming? Yes.
Did they tell us more balance patches are coming and gave us a road map for the rest of the year? Yes.
Did they give us a 64 bit client for window’s users? Yes.

In fact, they’ve been communicating with us all along. They didn’t answer your particularly concern. Well you know, there are thousands of people with concerns. You’re just one of them. Anet answered a huge amount of stuff.

Sorry, I don’t want to argue semantics, but any fix that doesn’t address the cause of the problem ultimately isn’t a solution.

I’m not denying that it might help, but nobody should be under the impression that “just” by using the 64 bit client is guaranteed to solve the crashing problems – which is the attitude I see too frequently when people dismiss crash complaints.

errrr not really…… memory fragmentation is a much more different problem than memory leak.

Giving more memory addresses to memory allocate to play with allows it to make better decisions by stop forcing it to aggressive reuse memory addresses.

Memory fragmentation is a natural problem with memory allocators. Sometimes, I wonder about giving Anet lots of flak that their game is so huge and expansive that they are easily hitting 32 bits limitations which are commonly faced by server applications.

Anyone, who has any experience of them, knows that it is when people stop posting you really have to worry.

While they’re still posting, it means they like enough things about the game to care, or did like enough things about it to still care.

They just have certain issues with it and/or its new direction.

I, personally, find complaints interesting (even the rude ones!), as I feel they shed light on possible issues and hold the most sincerity.

But, if I found them disturbing, or upsetting, I either wouldn’t hang around on the parts of the forums that contained most of them, or I wouldn’t click on them.

your statement about reddit is false. They only use it because it is populated by a large amount of fanbois that downvote anything that is not in their line of thinking, and therefore A-net has not to read it. It makes them feel good.
There is ABSOLUTELY NO communication the past few weeks. It is getting rediculous.

Is there a chance that you make a post telling us what the hell are you doing: concerning our complaints, the econoy, the DS crashes?

The community always complains a lot on the forums. ANet responding or not responding doesn’t result in fewer complaints. ANet addressing the complaints in patches and updates results in …more complaints. Basically, (some) customers like to complain.

And in fact, they don’t ignore our concerns. They make changes, sometimes quickly, while some changes take ages to test or need lots of design or mechanical changes.

What ANet is careful never to do is promise us anything they can’t deliver. So they wait until they are sure they understand the issue, sure they have a way to address the solution, and sure they can deliver it.

For me, the absolutely worst design change ANet made was when they required us to repeat identical challenges to level traits up. It ruined an aspect of the game that many of my friends loved and it discouraged me from creating new characters (and extending my interest in the game). They never admitted that entire concept went against their NPE principles or other design goals.

However, I am perfectly satisfied that they dropped the entire idea and made trait leveling identical to learning skills, even though it took over 18 months — they spent over a year designing the (in my opinion) horrid trait-challenge system; they weren’t going to be able to replace it any quicker than that.

So while I understand the frustration the OP has, I urge the OP to consider what it takes to change stuff in a game this size and wait it out. ANet will respond (although, as with traits, we have to be careful what we wish for).

They’re not ignoring anyone.

Good post

If you crash at DS just use 64 bit client.

Sadly the 64 bit client doesn’t help everyone as people are still reporting crashes when they use it. It’s a memory usage problem, all the 64 bit client does is delay crashing by giving the game access to more memory to flounder in, so it’s more a band-aid than an actual solution.

errrr not really…… memory fragmentation is a much more different problem than memory leak.

Thing is we still have people on 64-bit client and 8+ GB of RAM reporting crashes, so address limitations isn’t the only cause of this issue.

I was still crashing, to begin with, but then what (I would assume) would have previously been crashes, turned into really long lag spikes (or whatever you would call a freeze-type situation, like that), but no crash.

cough visual nerfs [merged] cough

They talked to us about visual nerfs. It was in the patch notes. In fact, they nerfed the visuals specifically due to long term complaints about noise in battles and not being able to see what’s going on.

The visual nerf complaints is a tiny minority of posts compared to the noise posts.

The visual nerf thread is now longer than other threads where anet have responded and it’s still growing when just a little communication from anet could soothe the savage beast. Curious, don’t you think?

I think it’s curious that you haven’t bothered to add up the dozens if not hundreds of threads over the years complaining about not being able to see. It’s been a major concern for a long long time.

And how many of the pages in that visual nerf thread are people arguing for it?

Except the nerfs they’ve done have done nothing to improve visibility, and if anything have made it worse because the particles are too muted for people to notice them. The impact particles, which are particularly awful, are also completely unchanged.

Players: “Please reduce the visual effects they completely obscure the targets!”
Anet: OK
Players: “I don’t like the visual nerf please revert it!”

Anet is obviously busy working on the game instead of replying to every post on the forums. Don’t forget Wintersday is right around the corner too.

For crashes – use the 64bit client. As for bug fixes and such – they already said there will be less small patches and fixes will be delivered in larger patches all at once.

instead of sighing they should answer: We will try and make it an option in the graphical menu, like a slider or something, seeing other games have it we can look into it at the minimum.

I don’t really respond well to the whole “Convert or Die!” approach.

Oh, you would if the ‘or die’ part was more vigorously enforced .
