I can almost guarantee that won’t happen. Elite specs are part of HoT. You want them? Buy the expansion.
Seems a little overboard to buy a expansion pack to play Reaper in wvw/pvp at this point. How about like $2 per elite specialization? Just a suggestion.
Do you often manage to close deals that amount to “out of all the work you’re doing here’s the thing I want the MOST… how about I give you some change I found between the cushions of my couch for it?”?
Seriously, you’d tip a waiter more for a bringing decent pizza to your table.
I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”

No. if you want part of the expansion, you buy the expansion . Nothing more need be said on the topic. Buy it or don’t. But features won’t be sold “piecemeal”.

What your asking will never happen. If you wanted certain skills from gw1, a stand al own campaign, you had to buy it. Not till 5 years down the line when all the skills have been totally added to the game, then they added it to the store in a special pack for pvp.
Games companies work that way, and have for since the past 15+ years.
Wow so much hostility LOL. You can buy GW2 for $10. How is $2 for 1 different weapon, 1 new trait line, and a set of utility bad? Its just a suggestion as seeing I don’t think I will buy a whole expansion for 1 small thing Anet can get to those people who only want some specializations unlocked. I’ve read Gw2 has sold over 5 million copies. Thats quite a pool of potential, seeing as a portion of those are second or third accounts. I have two accounts and might not even buy one expansion.

It seems more like people are giving you an honest answer and you don’t like it. But seriously in what world do you see that happening? Have you ever seen something like that happen?

What about any specializations that come along after HoT is released? How will they be implemented/made available? As freebies? Via the gemstore? Part of some new Living World chapter? Will we have to have HoT for them?

This might work well, actually. Of course, it’d have to be available only a while after HoT comes out to flesh out the people who really don’t think buying a whole expansion just for the elite specs is worth it, despite some complaints, and then make some micro cash on these Elite Spec purchases.
Not criticizing, just saying this’ll probably be a good way of going about things as a company.

If I were ANet, I’d sell them to you, but for like $8-$10 each.
…And then I wouldn’t give you any discount on the actual expansion if you decided you then wanted the rest of it.
This would allow people to buy 2-3 smaller pieces of the expansion if that’s all they really wanted, and would probably net them more $$$ in the long run.

Selling 10$ for a skin in Gem Store and then selling Elite specs for 2$ each? Are you trying to be smart or something?
Anyway, I think it was already confirmed that anything about Expansion won’t be sold in GEM Store. As you know any real company need real money not a virtual GEM.

That’s not how expansions work. Maybe much later on (after another expansion or two) it would make a bit more sense.

Because it would be a fair amount of work to set it up to unlock specializations individually. I doubt very much that they would be interested in doing the work unless they had a clear idea that there were large numbers of people who are not going to buy the expansion but would be interested in buying the specializations piecemeal.
ANet may give it to you.

Even though both games are Guild Wars, they are completely different. A lot of things that worked for GW simply don’t work for GW2.

Oh I know. I was just pointing out that this sort of thing is not without precedent. And since Anet is trying to make GW2 an e-sport…

Most likely they will be just added to anyone who has HoT, just as the new specializations are now. So yes, you will have to buy the expansion for them.
This is an expansion so the only thing that will be included for non-expansion players will be things that affect the base game. Anything new and added will be for the current game which is Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns.

Imagine the head-worry and micromanagement of all the checks for who has bought what…
Instead, it’s a binary switch with ‘Got the expansion? Fine, here’s everything. Oh, you don’t… here’s nothing’
And for all the development needed for that micromanagement solution that would take away precious development time of something more important – like game features or content – this request should be rejected.

Let’s be honest, $2 is laughable. And arbitrarily taking random things to seperate from expansions that you can buy alone is just a slippery slope that will give them more headaches from requests or people whining about silly things, and would hurt how much money they get. It’ll take (imo) atleast 10-30 people wanting this to make up for just one person who buys the expansion.
Plus their goal is to get people playing all parts of the game to help prevent it from getting stale and add longevity to the franchise, seperating PvE and PvP perks that you can select and buy kind of hurt their game. Why would they want to accept people will never PvE or PvP? That just leads to a more divided smaller community on both sides.

The problem with that suggestion is that the specializations are tightly linked to the expansion.
You unlock specialization skills by exploring HoT. In the long run each specialization will be associated to different regions of the world.
Asking for the possibility of getting specialization through gem store (without HoT), would be like asking to be able to buy 100% map completion through gem store.
But then, if you’re talking about pvp content, I think people will automatically be able to change to their respective specialization since people are supposed to be given the same tools to fight.
tl;dr :
Not happening in PvE and WvWvW.
Pvp might include specializations by default.

I recall hearing a dev say on stream (probably the chronomancer reveal) that buying the xpac unlocks elite specs in pvp.

How so?
There’s nothing binding these things to HoT. Even a new revenant will begin in the same tired old starting zones as every other profession, and this stage of his ‘story’ will perforce take place before the infamous ‘FIRE!’ command was given. How tightly linked is that?
Nothing about HoT really appeals to me as a player. Any chance we could buy specializations piecemeal in the gem store?
If you are willing to pay for the specializations piecemeal, then something about HoT appeals to you. Your post is literally self-refuting.

As for PvP:
In addition to these changes, the need to unlock skills and traits will be removed from Player vs. Player entirely, and you’ll automatically have all the specializations available to you whenever you’re in PvP.

As long as you’ve purchased Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns, you’ll automatically unlock access to all elite specializations in PvP.

Well it could be a problem say 2 or 3 expansions down the line when no one is playing HoT anymore and has moved on to fighting Bubbles or something. The old content might not feel worth buying or playing but the specialisations might still be appealing.
