Change to HoT Story Gating
Curiously it does that showing bug for all story steps. Ran through on my alt the other day and after completing the first story step (Torn from the Sky), it told me I had to get gliding mastery (for something that’s actually rather silly in the story – a single NPC you need to glide to in the open world).
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
We’ll take a look at the next step “Sign Cutting” being bugged out, as well as some or all of you having to jump through hoops to get the quest to update correctly. Sorry again for the inconvenience – we’ll have the quest’s designer and QA do a deeper dive on these issues.
This is still bugged. It’s been two and a half weeks and this story step is still buggy as heck.
Can the Story Mastery Gate removed completly ? Game Design has evoluate in the past years …
I’m really not enjoying the story because of this forced Mastery Grind.
So far I spent more time farming EXP than playing the Story …
20 minutes a quest, then 1h+ for Mastery Grind
How your designers really thought to introduce this hard flow breaker ??!
I did used LFG for group event
But most of the time I group for an event that I dont have the Mastery or Waypoint .. Oo

Try to pace yourself when it comes to story. Don’t try to do the entire story in one day. Problem solved.
Hmm…Gating on Personal Stories. I’m sure I’ve seen that somewhere before….
I don’t understand the complaints on the elite spec. I was able to almost fully unlock it (only shy maybe 10 points) as soon as I logged in. I had that many extra hero points. Did no one else? I didn’t do anything special. I had every thing on my character unlocked day 1.

Yeah, elite specs weren’t too hard (unless you really really want to try them out on characters you haven’t mained, like a lvl60 thief).
Masteries, on the other hand…

So, it went like this .. I started the Story, completed Torn From The Sky, I am not locked out from the rest of it by a Mastery gate.
Prey tell me how I progress at a sensible ‘pace’?
No, I don’t want to grind zone events for HPs, I want to play the Story, that for me is one of the largest aspects of GW .. I don’t PVP or run dungeons .. that and zone exploration, both of which are gated.
What is this ‘pace’ you refer to?
Hmm…Gating on Personal Stories. I’m sure I’ve seen that somewhere before….
Not in the base GW2 game,m unless you mean the LEVEL gating, but that was LEVELING to increase your character’s power, which of course doesn’t happen in HoT.
Elite spec?
Only if you want to play it, and frankly I level a Ranger as a ranged DPS, not a second-rate trinity healer.

Tons of things are now gated, unfortunately… vanilla GW2 was so choice-based, but now even loading out the skills you want requires unlocking skill circles instead of trees. Pretty hard to live with, since (most of us GW2 fans) came from GW1, which was very flexible about customization and playability. Not a lot of gates there, apart from tutorial islands.

Here is a new idea … need to fix the bugs that ‘gate’ my ability to finish the part of the story where you fight the dragon.

Which specific mastery gate are you locked out from after Torn From the Sky?
edit: it’s basic gliding mastery. Choose basic gliding mastery in your mastery menu and xp you’ll earn will contribute towards unlocking it. Once the bar is full you can spend 1 mastery point to earn gliding. It shouldn’t take you more than half an hour to earn the neccessary xp by doing the activities I listed below.
Doing the event chains in Verdant Brink are also part of the overarching story. There’s more to the story then just the story instances.
The pace I’m refering to is any pace that doesn’t include jumping from story instance to story instance without doing anything else.
If you find yourself at loss of what else to do you can try the following things in Verdant Brink:
- Doing one of the 5 big event-chains (In each corner of the map and the center of the map)
- Doing adventures. Try to achieve Silver.
- Doing Hero challenges
- Hunting Mastery Points
good luck!

I personally did not find any of the masteries a grind when doing the story and I was one of the ones who did it while needing the poison mastery. I had gotten as far as beating the Rata Novus instance that first day but ran into the bug with the Aric’s markings not appearing.
XP comes fairly quickly if you use boosters. None of these are expensive nor require you to purchase from the gem store. Just focus on doing the meta event chains and getting as many kills as you can. I personally did the Pact Encampment chain in VB until more people started doing the DS meta.
Only a small amount of time will be spent getting the requisite masteries to complete the story.

Can I ask about the part in bold? What did you mean there? I know you get boosters from some achievement chests and such, but is there another source?

Laurel vendor has the +50% from all sources. The on kills ones are unavailable except from the NPE rewards from leveling a toon which can be converted. I always bring up the no gem store part because it’s inevitable that someone will in an effort to disclaim that everyone has access to boosters.
Edit: I think black lion chests still give out other boosters such as regen and such. I am remembering getting a bunch of boosters since HoT went live so it must been from them as you get a key once each time you run through the HoT story with a character.

Thank you.
Fix the Elite Specialization . I want to play my class not PvE for it.
Totally this. I bought the expac for new elite specs. Instead I got enforced BS pve grinds again and again and again for every single character.
Its not hard to get your specializations. Getting hero points is something to earn towards it and its part of the game. I am happy i got through 3 of my characters already. Not hard to do. Its a good feeling to have accomplished it. Why do you want everything given to you for free? Earn it. Its very rewarding!
I’ll drop this in the issue reports thread as well, but since there exists a thread for this specific gate, I thought it a good place as well.
While probably inadvertent given the size of the 1/26 update, the poison lore gate to “Sign Cutting” is back in place. I don’t necessarily have a problem with gating the story missions, I do when it doesn’t make sense. There’s no place in the story where poison lore is required to continue, and level 4 of 6 is out of place with the other story requirements.
A good move, but I don’t think good enough.
How about making masteries a progression, where you could make partial progress and have it mean something? That could make it less of a brick wall and more like beach sand.
Picture this: you get credit for the mastery for gating purposes once you’ve pulled in some percentage of the XP. You would be required to have the mastery points available, but not actually get far enough to use them.
This would allow players to partially complete several masteries, thus no longer being blocked. But, they wouldn’t get the benefits until they complete it.
Some of the gates might require story changes, though. I’m not sure all of them could utilize such a feature. But, it would certainly help eliminate some more of the grindiness.
Oh, another thing: allow Silverwastes and Dry Top XP to be used for HoT mastery progression. You might want to also include XP from any mordrem killed elsewhere in central Tyria.
NOTE: The player would have to choose which track the XP gets used in, Central Tyria or Maguuma.
This wouldn’t derail the story, because people would still be fighting Maguuma/dragon type bad guys. But, it certainly would help with having to plow through HoT just to move to the next step.
Er…what? There are 50 pages of complaints on that thread because you gated specialisations behind hero points for every single character we have. Not once have I heard anyone complain they couldn’t progress their story. This change solves nothing.
Then you are simply not reading.
THANK YOU!!!
Now just fix the Elite Spec gating and the game will be golden!!!
No, they also need to make a way to figure out where you are on the difficult maps. Maybe make the mini-map 3 dimensional or something. I’ve been to 5 different levels at the exact place where the storyline star is on my map, and I still can’t get to it. All I know is it’s up.

On the subject of not reading, the post you just replied to is from three months ago and is referring to a problem that Anet have subsequently fixed. Almost everything in this thread has been dealt with close to a quarter of a year ago. It only got necroed because the recent patch undid something relating to this subject that it ought not have.
Do NOT cave on Elite specializations. Everyone already gets access to the new weapon skills that can be used to further unlock the rest of the traits by PLAYING THE GAME. Unlocking your elite traits is no different than how you would progress new characters in other mmos. You get skills every other level by…PLAYING THE GAME. Just like in GW2 you get traits and skills by playing the game. You only need 40 HP…less if you prepared yourself for this expansion. Are you guys new to MMO’s? And once you unlock the mysteries needed to get to the HPs on your first character the rest of your characters won’t have to unlock anything.
GW1 was the same way. You had to go out and do quest to obtain skills or save all of your plat and buy your skills from a vendor. Everybody just wants to race strait to the end.
I think the people complaining the loudest about elite specs are pvpers. I can see their point. And, while I wouldn’t darken the door of pvp, there are many pvpers who think that’s all there is of value. So, gating pvpers for elite specs is, I feel a problem, even though it will never affect me.

I JUST noticed that myself. Sorry for replying. I’ll stop now.
