Unless the current trait unlock system is replaced,
That has already been confirmed, though with no details on what it will be replaced with.

Read closer:
Colin Johanson…we’re going to be removing the current trait unlocking system currently on live and replacing it with a more simplified system that supports where skills-traits-specializations are going in the future.

No he confirmed that it would be changing -
“In doing so: we’re going to be removing the current trait unlocking system currently on live and replacing it with a more simplified system that supports where skills-traits-specializations are going in the future. We’ll go into more details between now and the release of HOT on how skills, traits, and specializations will work in the new Gw2 world.”

He clearly stated the trait system is going to be replaced.

Nice to merge the topics, how about an answer? Dont tell me this has not been decided yet, that makes no sense.
If I had to guess at the inner dialogue of the gnomes in Marketing, there will be a basic edition that does not have an extra character slot, and a deluxe version that — in addition to a ton of other whistles and bells to entice you to part with an extra 20 bucks — does have an extra character slot.
It’s just so perfectly one of those things that would be nice but isn’t strictly required for it be functional.

When the original Guild Wars added classes they included character slots with the purchase, so I hope the same will apply here.

I’m fairly certain Gail already knows the answer to this question. That isn’t the problem. It’s a matter of when she will be allowed to say anything about it. Most likely she will be allowed to answer either the day of release or…if we are lucky…the day before. I myself don’t expect an answer before the game is available to the public.
The information will be made available in the same front page essay/page describing the product levels (basic, deluxe, OMGCollectors, etc.) and price points.

Hi everyone, I’m pretty curious about this (but maybe not important for some of you). Do you think that buying an expansion for Guild Wars 2 will give you an extra free character slot?
I never buy or play Guild Wars before, so maybe some of you who played and bought Guild Wars 1 expansions have an answer to this?
Reason why I ask this?
I’m not rich in-game, and I’m not that good in making in-game money… So I probably gonna buy gem for character slost. But if we will have a free character slot by buying an expansion, I can buy gem for anything else (like skins. hahaha)
We are completely unaware. The devs have been abnormally quiet about this topic, when its actually probably the most important thing to let the players know so they can organize finances and such.
3 of the 4 GW1 expansions gave character slots. Eye of The North did not, as it was the only expansion that didn’t release a new class.
So no word from the devs so far. I have gems ready for HoT’s release. If they don’t give us a new slot, I can buy a slot. If they do, I can buy something pretty.

I very much want to know this. I would think it’s glaringly obvious that if you’re releasing a new class, you’d better give at least 1 character slot, but then again, we still don’t have a build saver…

As for EOTN, even back then, A-net said it was not an expansion (in the sense Factions and Nightfall was). Crucially, it did not introduce a new class.
You got it mixed up. EotN (leaving GW Beyond out of it) were the only expansion, hence why you need one of the standalone campaigns to play it. It wasn’t a new game in the sense Nightfall and Factions were because you actually needed at least one of the three games to play it. They even sold EotN bundled with Prophecies from day one.
There aren’t really any reasons to demand a free character slot. You’re paying for content, that’s what you get.
Why not? Factions introduced 2 new classes, it provided a character slot. Same for Nightfall.
No new classes in EOTN so no character slot. Fine.

the NF pre-order actually gave you a free char slot, so in the end you have 9 slots when you have all chapters.

The thought crossed my mind, and I had this discussion with my guildies and will we have to delete an existing character if our character slots are full of fully geared 80s just to make room for the new class if we choose to play it?
Maybe a half off character slot expansions?
I’m just curious as to what might happen.

In Guild Wars 1 Campaigns you received 2 free Character slots (total of 10 if you bought ‘em all) so it’s possible. It’s worth noting however, that Guild Wars Eye of the North, the only expansion for Guild Wars did not include a new character slot, though it did not include a class either.

Considering you’d get a free slot when a new class came out in GW1, and Arenanet is fairly consistent with stuff, I’d assume you do get one.

The Rev is a part of the x-pac. A slot will be included I am sure.

It would seem odd to pay for an expansion we would be unable to play unless we bought additional slots from the store.

I don’t know why anyone expects this, or would be upset if it wasn’t given.
It’s really not that hard to get a character slot increase..

Maybe not, but you’d expecting paying full price for an expansion featuring a brand new class to at least allow you to play that class without paying extra for the slot/deleting an existing char.

It’s a slippery slope when you start talking about all the things you could expect when you shell out cash for an expansion. For all we know, the expansion will be priced to exactly account for the resources going in to develop the new content, leaving none as compensation for gem store gratuities like character slot expansions.
However, Arenanet has proved to be pretty gracious and has typically never pushed the gem store on anyone, perhaps they will give a freebie character slot expansion to every account?

I’d bet heavily on getting a character slot with the expansion.
Their generosity – eg. not having a subscription AND not having a stinky pay-to-win cash shop – has played a significant role in ArenaNet’s success. Why would they start being stingy now?
The only potential problem could be players who already have the max number of slots. They might need to alter a few database tables to accommodate them.
I don’t know if this has been stated or asked before, but I believe with a introduction of a new class we should get an extra character slot.
Having to delete a character or spend an extra $10 in gems would be pretty underhanded IMHO.
Again if its been answered sorry

It will come with a character slot. When they released new classes with Factions and Nightfall we got free slots. When they released Eye of the North, they didn’t release a new class so we didn’t get slots. They won’t charge you for a slot for a new profession that is included in the x-pac.

It has been asked million times already, but no answer was given, we can only speculate till they say/announce something official.
They really need to answer this question. They took the time to make a merge thread, and dub all other posts outside of the merge thread as spam, but they won’t take the time to just write “yes” or “no”. Its silly really.
They need to answer it, so people can prepare finances if we do need to buy a new character slot, or so we can put the money/gold towards something else if we don’t need to buy it.
EDIT: Again. Took the time to merge the thread into the big thread, but not reply. shrugs

Shouldn’t be too hard to change, just up the number of possible slots on any account by 1, and then give everyone a slot, should be fairly easy to do

I think there’s technical software reasons for the 64 number max. Plus one might just not be possible.
Otoh I’d imagine the number of people with 64 slots in use is fairly low. Low enough that those accounts might be offered something else of the same value with their HoT purchase, possibly just the gems, if ANet does intend to provide a slot to everyone.

It might not be that simple.
From what I’ve heard the current max is an ‘odd’ number, most likely the max number permitted by that database field type. So to increase the character slot max they’d need to change the field type.
Mechanically it’s not complicated to change a field type. But every time you go up a level to accommodate bigger numbers the size of every value in that field gets a bit bigger. That’s going to impact slightly on optimization and performance somewhere. But in an online game that’s slightly x every player, which can add up.
Would it be worth everyone suffering a performance hit just to accommodate that small minority of players? Possibly not. They might instead choose to refund the value of a character slot to players who buy HoT and already have the max number of characters.

It’ll come with a slot or my Asura warrior will eat one of her greatswords.

No new classes in EOTN so no character slot. Fine.
The addition of a standalone campagin with new slots (with the option to create a new account with four slots) doesn’t compare to the addition of an expansion for GW2. The marketing model was different, people arguing that “they did it in GW1” don’t seem to grasp that. That’s not saying they wont add a new slot, just that it doesn’t matter what they did with the old games.

It does matter because it’s the same company.
Their doing it before doesn’t guarantee they’ll do it in the future, but the reasons they did it last time still apply. Not giving an extra character slot would be stingy and ArenaNet’s phenomenal success has been built in no small part on their generosity.

When purchasing expansion packs in other games, they often come with additional character slots, especially if new classes are created in that expansion. I know I’m not the only one with at least 5 characters already created who would hate to have to part with an existing character or fork over more cash to not have to do so. Since we’re buying a new profession in the xpac, it would be nice if we would get an additional character slot to go along with it.
Any plans for that?

GW2 comes with one slot per race. Since there is no new race in the expansion, my guess would be ’’no", however, nothing is set in stone yet. The merged topic for this subject is here

That would be because whoever they contracted to build these forums did a kitten-poor job and left a bunch of bugs everywhere that nobody at ANet can fix.
On topic, I should very much hope they will include a character slot with the expansion. They’re releasing a new profession, which means a lot of people will want to make a new character, but many of the more dedicated players will have already filled all their slots, so making them buy an expansion and then another character slot just to experience something that comes with the expansion would be pretty Scroogey on ANet’s part.

No official word but given ANet’s history of generosity towards players, and their GW1 expansions with a new class including a free character slot, I’d guess yes.
That said I think a lot of players intending to make a revenant have already gone ahead and bought a character slot to make sure they get a name they like.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Given that this “expansion” is mostly game mechanic “fixes” and very little content, I’d say they need to add a slot or two to justify a price tag.
We have to get 1 expansion slot.
I REALLY don’t think that ANet want to put people into the position of having to decide which of their beloved toons they want to delete to make way for the new profession on day 1 of HoT.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Guild Wars 1 used to give +2 slots on each "campain", and although gave none on GW:EN, which would be the corresponding expansion, Eye of the North did not added a new profession to the game.
I think it would be most fair with the players (and those very dedicated to the game that have 5+ characters already) to be given one additional slot for the Revenant.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Id say they probably will add 1 extra slot with the expansion it would be kind of harsh of them to say here buy the $40 expansion then another $10 on a char slot to play it, or go and delete a char you’ve been playing for the last 2 years.

I would really hate to have to delete my fully geared lvl 80 just for the revenant- I meant yea I want to try out the rev as do alot of people- now if I stick with it not sure, but that’s why an extra character slot is best here, so those who don’t have the space and would benefit from an extra character slot.

Not sure if this was already asked.
When we purchase the HOT do we get extra character slots? And if we do how many?
I would be happy with only 1, for revenant ofc ^^
It’s been asked a lot.
Personally I REALLY don’t think that ANet want to put people into the position of having to decide which of their beloved toons they want to delete to make way for the new profession on day 1 of HoT.
