A character slot is incredibly cheap in game. Sure it would be nice to have it included, but it’s not the end of the world. You’re litterally QQing about less than a day of farming to get the gems.

I honestly think that the base expansion not including a new character slot is fair. Sure, the old gw1 campaigns gave you 2 free slots, but they were stand alone. If you bought prophecies first that one gives you 6 while the others gave you 2 each. Same the other way around. However this expansion isn’t standalone, you need the base game (yes, packaging the base game with the expansion is questionable, but please don’t focus on that here).
What about people complaining that you can’t play content you bought? Well the same held true for the base game at launch, 8 character classes to divide up among 5 character slots. Finally, something a guild mate of mine said a couple of months ago:
There’s no guarantee that you will use a new character slot if it came with the expansion for a Revenant.

There’s no way the core game is “free” for 50 friggin dollars. GW1 expansions were 29.99, were a complete game, added 2 classes with skills, and added a character slot.
This is ridiculous.

I dont need character slot(i grinded my extra character slot with that portal),i want what they write,(gw2 original game included) so 5slots or separate account key code.

That’s not how GW1 worked. The first game wasn’t the “core”, it was just the first campaign. Each campaign was independent and usable and come with 2 character slots. Also, each account gets for free 2 complementary slots by default.
So if you bought Nightfall alone, you’d get 4 slots. Then you buy Prophecies and you’d get 2 more slots for 0 new classes (cause all the Prophecy classes were included in the other campaigns)

You can absolutely have a separate account key, just don’t upgrade your existing account. There, now you have a useless extra new account with HoT on it, exactly as they wrote. It does say new account OR upgrade after all, maybe some reading is in order?

oops, I must have been remembering wrong, but at any rate the first stand alone game you got came with more character slots than the second or third. And what we’re getting isn’t a stand alone game, it’s an expansion, and if we compare it with the one and only gw1 expansion you’ll notice they’re similar in the fact that neither comes with extra character slots.

just my 2 cents, but i think a free character slot in the basic version would calm down many people without hurting anyone. Then 50$ would still be a little high for some, but still we have something.
maybe not the best english EU/NA, sorry.

1 char slot
1 bank extension
1k gems as an apology for insulting us.
$50 for a below average expansionI’d start feeling better
This looks good, but I sure that will not happen.

And a Lamborghini for good luck.
GW1 expansion didn’t include a new class or race so no reason really to need a new slot.
Here I have 4 choices :
- fork an extra $10
- create a new account and leave all my 6 chars in the “dust”
- delete a char I spent time building, leveling and equipping
- just not use that new HoT feature, the Revenant, which in a way cheapens the value of the addon itself I’m buying

Which GW1 xpac are you talking about??
Factions and Nightfall both added 2 new professions and a plethora of new stuff/content…enough content to justify them as a stand alone game… HoT will NOT have this much content as factions/nightfall did…yet justify kitten price tag..seems logical…

You forgot about other choices like:
-Not buying the expansion (possibly buy it around Christmas)
-Grinding for gold to buy gems.
-Quit the game
You do not have to buy the expansion, the game will still work and all. On the other hand, I think the less people buy it now the faster packages will get better.

So they expect you to stump up £35 for an expansion pack with a new character class that you can’t even play unless you hand them another £10 or so for a character slot?
Way to alienate and flip the bird to your loyal players ANet.

There is one more option — don’t buy the expansion and continue to play what you’ve already bought. It’s something that must be considered when looking at the price and what is included for the price.
You forgot about other choices like:
-Not buying the expansion (possibly buy it around Christmas)
-Grinding for gold to buy gems.
-Quit the game
Well it was implied that if the 4 choice I gave weren’t satisfactory, the result would be to not buy HoT.
I’d like to note that the concept of “grinding gold to buy gems” is roughly equivalent to “shelling out $10 to buy a slot” but in a way that is more boring and cost me more time of my life thus a definitively less effective method and not worth considering.
We’ve seen a lot of questions about whether Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns will offer a character slot.
I’m merging the various threads so that when this information is available, we’ll be able to update everyone with an interest in this topic in a single thread.
This qoute is super shady and theres no denying it, you are confirming the fact that you are adding character slots but didnt feel the need to specify it was only for the heroic edition?

After considering my options I made this decision: I’m not going to buy HoT yet, not until at least an extra slot is included in the standard pack. Something else worth considering is lowering the price and EXclude the core game. If new people want to play GW2 + HoT they should buy them separately and old player can buy just HoT. However, if they don’t include an extra slot in the standard pack, I would probably still buy it but as a “new” player (the way I think most would do it).

Tera online have xtra character slot for the gunners class and didn’t have to pay 20$ it was free. No sub fee game as well. Now I know it’s not a game that gw2 is but it’s f2p. feel like I’m paying for new players discount. They need a character slot to make the value fair for veteran players. That way everyone is happy

EoTN was the only add on to not have character slots. No new class or race which the others did have which in turn gave slots

That many I’m sure you can delete one that is absurd…No justifiable reason for having that many.

I am baffled by the sense of entitlement. I am a veteran player been here since the start.
I have played the expansions for many games, SWTOR, Diablo, ect.
People did not blink at the digital Expansions of Diablo 3 that was originally set at 60$ and it came with nothing else. Nothing, no betas, no character slots, it was just a story line expansion really. Not only that but you still had to buy the original Diablo three Seperately. Which was really new player unfriendly.
Let us look at what Archeage charged with thier 200 dollar preaccess to Alpha. and it 99 for thier access for beta.
I am shocked at the double standard people are portraying here. Especially after seeing the amount of work and how much larger the expansion actually is in GW2. They are investing so much time and work into this thing and changing core systems, improving them across the board.
Just because they didn’t give an extra character slot? Just because they decided to throw in the core game for those that didn’t have it? If you want Veteran rewards that’s really a discussion for a separate thread and has nothing to do with the selling of an expansion.
If you don’t want to play the beta, wait and dont pre-purchase it, perhaps the price will go down.

Is the additional character slot really worth almost the same as the Standard version of the HoT expansion? I mean, all the useless digital stuff aside, is additional 30€ really what you want to charge for something that costs 10€ (800 gems) in your own Gem shop?
It also boggles my mind how anyone with marketing experience could decide to make such a discriminating decision towards the old players that probably have all of their characters slots used up. I mean the original GW1 expansions came all with an additional character slot for every new profession that got introduced. How hard was it to just say, here 50€ for the standard version including a “free” character slot.
I am not questioning the pricing politics just how badly it sounds to break from a tradition that got introduced so long ago with the original Guild Wars expansions. Yeah sure, people can just buy a slot from the gem shop but a token of good will would have been much appreciated and actually expected, even by those who understand that nothing is free.

Please show one example of where anyone said they’re entitled to anything. I don’t see any. Instead what I see is largely a community consensus (between this and the other threads) that the value being offered for the asking price doesn’t match up in the minds of the player base. It is completely reasonable to let arenanet know that their sales won’t match their own expectations if they don’t get on the same page, value-wise, as their current customer base.
No entitlement. Just a bunch of people with 50 bucks, or more, that they’d be willing to part with if Anet meets them on that very basic free-market principle.
And, by the way, Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls came with an additional slot (it actually came with 2 slots and an additional 3 for a total of 5 if you bought the digital deluxe edition). Way to get your facts straight. But thanks for stopping by.

I too would like to add my voice in favor of a new character slot included with the base expansion.
It feels pretty underhanded to offer a new profession as part of the expansion content, and then require another purchase before players can try it.
The expansion feels a bit overpriced as well, but it would feel less so if a character slot was included.

Correction: many people blinked at Diablo 3 in its entirety, on account of it sucked. Your other factual errors have already been addressed.
Just because Archeage’s preaccess was also not worth the price tag, does not make this expansion any less overpriced. It’s wonderful that people paid $200 for Archeage, it really is; I did not, nor will I pay for this at any of the currently offered amounts.
As far as your advice not to buy it, I believe that is precisely our intention. We are voicing our reasons why we are choosing not to buy it, in case Anet opts to come around. It’s a case of Capitalism vs. Sanity and is one of, if not the primary point(s) of this thread.

Does anyone know if the extra character slot with the $75 version is usable on our existing account or just on the phantom “copy” that we can not use?
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

I am personally fine with the price, but it is ridiculous to not include at least one character slot with the base package, especially since newer players are getting five right out. It just does not demonstrate a commitment to the existing user base. I have been with the game since the original betas but I am holding off on my preorder in the hopes that they come to their senses, so that then I can pull my wallet out and let them know monetarily that this is the thing they needed to do.
Does anyone know if the extra character slot with the $75 version is usable on our existing account or just on the phantom “copy” that we can not use?
There is no ‘phantom copy’. You use the code you get to either create a new account or upgrade your existing account with HoT. If you upgrade, you’ll get the slot in your existing account.

Another slot? Most people in game can farm enough gold or use real cash to buy the gems, then buy the slot. Unfortunately, dropping the price would be a better option for those who already have GW2.

Alright, alright, I get the goodwill gesture of trying to attract new playerbase, but let’s face it, it came to bite you hard in the bottom.
But it’s not like it’s that hard to fix. Really, just add that character slot to standard, and/or give old players some gems on the side. Or at least make the core game a separate code, christ, so veterans have the feeling they actually bought SOMETHING. Either to make a separate account for different server play, or to give it to a friend (that way, you get a new player = you win some) or whatever.
Just use the round thing on top of your neck, sheesh. You made an awesome game in the first place, don’t ruin it by shiving those loyal to you in the eye. If we played this long, there’s a solid chance we’ll just keep playing. And dishing out gems to pay for more.

Since the core game is included it would be reasonable to create 4 empty chr. slots for every account where the expansion is added.
I dont want to delete any of my 8 characters ,to be able to play the new revanant class, new character slot should come as standard with the expansion.
I don’t get it. I have 2 accounts already.
If I go for the 1st option I get a 3rd account with HoT access OR I add the key to existing account and get no slots???

However this expansion isn’t standalone, you need the base game (yes, packaging the base game with the expansion is questionable, but please don’t focus on that here).
That’s not true. You can’t buy the core game at all right now. Pre-purchasing HoT is the only way to access GW2.
And according to their updated FAQ, HoT includes GW2 core. Not bundled together as a gift, the “expansion” includes the core game. That’s as standalone as it gets.

It’s different. Each and every player was able to potentially access all classes with GW2. They could end up rolling 5 Mesmers, but it didn’t matter, what I mattered. Nobody was locked out of a class, even if they couldn’t have one of each at the same time. They could make a test character and delete it, but it was their option.
With HoT and without an additional slot, there will be people who are unable to access Revenant in any way, unless they delete one of their existing characters or purchase a new slo. Even if they would have used the slot for a core class, they were still given potential access to the Revenant.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Heimskarl Ashfiend.9582
What I cannot believe is that they didn’t even create an option to buy HoT with an additional slot and no other bells and whistles. That is how you know it is a money grab. There isn’t even an option that is $60 for HoT and character slot, because it looks bad for it to be more expensive, so they just leave it without one.
It’s not like character slots cost ANet anything to produce.

Wouldn’t it be fair if ANet just provide 5 new character slots for old and new player alike? You pay $50, you all shall get 5 more slots. If you don’t have any now, you’ll get 5. If you have 5, you get 5 more. The contents of the original GW2 and HoT are all inclusive. Let’s just make it simple. You’re basically paying for the slots.

What makes getting a character slot fair, value.
New players have received a value added nod in the way of a free copy of the game. By the way super smart and awesome the community needs to grow.
Some people say well you got to play all this time, true but I paid for that. I paid for the disk, I paid in time and I paid by promoting the game to others.
Some people will have you believe that you should just grind out the gems, again while that is possible, I like alot of people don’t play this game all day, To grind out the 800 gems take me week at an hour here and a hour there.
This costs me valuable time when I could be doing other things and while I enjoy the game I do not enjoy gold just so I can do what someone who just starts the game can do right away. If I value my time by the base wage I could make 11 something an hour every hour I am forced to play extra when I did not have to de-values the game.
I only as for equality if you value add for new players there should be a value add for existing players. It doesn’t need to be equivilant, a whole game versus a character slot is far from the same. I am not greedy I work hard for my money, I hate the new generation of consumers attitude, conformance through acceptance.
1. People who gripe but have nothing constructive to say please just don’t say anything as you hurt the cause
2. People complain about complain shoudn’t, your enither trolling or you think you are helping ANet, your not, your making more Rage, and in the end if we all get up and just leave never say anything ANet would never know what went wrong. How will they improve they cannot.
Voice your opinion in a firm but constructive manner. ANet you need to be faster at addressing issues like this, this wait time is getting on par with the Sony hack situation it make me and I am sure other feel like we don’t matter enough to take time to address things quickly.
In the end regardless of right and wrong Anet you hurt people feeling by not being fair and then being closed mouthed. Please even if you give nothing you should address and apologize.
