Q:

A few MMO’s have added a feature to their expansions, allowing new players to “boost” their characters to the level of the expansion so they can play with family and friends in the expansion content from day one.

Will this be a feature GW2 will have as well for Heart of Thorns?

If I don’t like it, I won’t do it.

Tomes of Knowledge gained from game play. If your account is brand new, there is no short cutting.

In my opinion, it’s not so much a short cut as it is playing in relevant content from day one.

The idea behind GW2 is that all content is relevant content (personal opinions might differ, but this is at least the design idea behind it).

I agree, Tome of Knowledge should suffice. I imagine a new player would want to level a character from the beginning, to get the whole story. Apart from that, leveling in Guild Wars, really doesn’t have to take as long as in, for example, World of Warcraft.
I started a mesmer about two weeks ago, and was able to level her up instantaneously to level 20, with the birthday gift (can’t recall the name of it). With only playing less than two hours a day, I’m now level 50, and can get her to 80 when she hits level 65 with tomes of knowledge.

and during all that time spent playing alone in content that your friends and family have already completed, they will have completed alot of expansion content without you – the point of a character boost is so friends and family can play together in content that none have done yet, and I think it would attract alot of new players to the game.

Actually, through all that time, I’ve done my personal story, exploration with my girl friend, lots of pvp and dungeons with guildies and friends. It’s actually been quite a social experience. Only thing I’ve done alone is my personal story and leveling my two professions.

WRT automatically levelling a char to L80, IMO you are missing out on an awful lot of perhaps important content. Working a char up to L80 can be considered a kind of training for the player as it gives them the opportunity to work out what is the best way for them to play the given profession. With help, you can get up to L80 quite quickly that is not to say it would take hours to do so but more likely days.

The insta-L20 books/scrolls, the experience gain writs, and Tomes of Knowledge/Mentoring are all Account Bound AFAIK. A sufficient number of Tomes of Knowledge to advance a character from L1 to L80 can probably be acquired for an account over the period of 2-3 months/8-12 weeks by my reckoning and since the original release of GW2 the L20 books/scrolls have been awarded to each char on their birthday (the annual anniversary of their creation as opposed to the annual anniversary of the account).

Option 1: Friends/family take advantage of down-scalling to help the new player level up and learn the game, which allows them to play together right from the start and will probably make levelling a bit quicker for the new player. (Especially if they use their 10 XP boosters.) (They can also use tomes from login rewards to speed it up.)

Option 2: The new player takes advantage of up-scalling to play WvW and PvP (‘end game’ content) at level 80 with friends/family, gaining XP faster in WvW and getting tomes from PvP. Importantly this would also include some of the HoT content since both game modes are getting new maps and mechanics in the expansion.

(Remember that new players can pre-purchase too, which will give them until the expansion comes out to level up. Since we don’t even have a release date yet it’s very likely they’ll have plenty of time to get one character to 80.)

Option 3: Neither of the above is an option. Friends/family are unwilling to play anything except HoT PvE content or to delay playing until the new player has caught up and will not be willing to play it again when they have. It’s unlikely this issue will be related to just this one instance – what if they want to do dungeons their friends have already done? Or want to experience the rest of PvE at some point in future? Therefore it would be beneficial for the new player to get used to playing solo and/or find other people to play with when their current friends are unwilling to participate.

Option 4: The new player is looking for a way to bypass existing PvE content because they have no interest in levelling/‘questing’ and don’t want to play WvW or PvP. In this case they should probably find another game. From what we’ve seen and heard HoT is not going to be dramatically different to what we’ve already got, so if they don’t enjoy what’s already there it’s unlikely they will enjoy HoT either and should save their money.

Also, Tomes are so freaking easy to get that you could probably get to 80 in a month or so with minimal effort (PvP tracks, Login Rewards, etc.)

If ‘family and friends’ are unwilling to enter a map with any character once having been there, they won’t find much on offer in GW2/HoT. It’s not that kind of game, where you ‘complete’ the content by visiting it once, truly.

I think the new player has more problems than leveling a character, if the ‘friends and family’ aren’t willing to share/help them level.

And few mmos aint it only 1 big one

Edit
And if your going to buy hot you may aswell do it now and get started leveling you will have the writs/tomes to level another char to 80 by the time hot launches that way anyway

As others have said, if your having this problem then this might not be the game for you. You can level an 80 with normal gameplay in very minimal playtime. If you really are brand new and want to level a char to 80 instantly, you could convert a ton of real world money to gold and craft to 80. That’s probably the biggest waste of real world money I’ve ever seen, but if you really want to get to 80 in an hour or two you could.

Actually with down scaling there is plenty of old content that is worth doing. In fact, im usually in low level zones daily for huge epic world bosses. The issue of being a max level and going to a starting zone just DESTROYING everything isn’t felt in gw2 as it is in WoW since that’s what I assume you’re referring to. I suspect this is why they are adding the map bonuses for sought after crafting materials.

Yeah, I’m not sure the best experience is for a brand-new player to start off in the highest/most difficult zone. That might turn more people off than the scenario posited above.

This game rewards high-level characters playing in low-level zones, so there isn’t a barrier to family and friends playing with someone new. =)

If you’re not willing to go to a lower level area to play with your friend/help them out then you are not their friend. Especially considering in GW2 you still get decent rewards playing in lower level areas

If it’s a brand new player to the game, the very last thing they need to be doing is becoming an instant 80 and going to what is supposed to be the area for veteran players. They won’t know how to play. They won’t know their skills. They won’t know about combo fields. They won’t know the traits they need. They wont know where to buy tools, crafting, gear, how to get to places. They won’t know ANYTHING. The people with them will have to babysit them in what’s supposed to be the hardest maps in PvE as they won’t know what to do.

It’s one thing for a veteran player to take a brand new profession and use tomes to get an instant 80 as they’ve been playing and know all the background stuff already. All they need is the fine points on their new char. New players should level by going out in the vanilla maps and learn the basics before they go to the max level areas.

Be careful what you ask for

Not only that^, but veteran players can work on their Pact Masteries, and earn the new Map Rewards in Pact Tyria. It’s not like there is no reason to visit the maps that someone new will be leveling in. I think the OP may have the wrong idea about how GW2 works.

Has he even asked said ‘family and friends’ if they are willing to play with him/her as he/she levels??? Or is all this just an assumption?

It is unclear if this will be a feature of the expansion. There is no official statement yet.

However, from what they stated in the past, I think it would be very unlikely.

So if a new player wants to play the expansion content from day one I suggest he/she buys the expansion (pre purchase) 1-2 months before release date and then he/she can play the game and have as a result a character at level 80 when the expansion releases.

As we do not have a release date yet, it is still more than enough time to do so now.

P.S. If someone / a new player wants to play the revenant class from day one in the expansion he/she has to collect “Tomes of Knowledge” before, to “fast level” a new character.

Just because World of Warcraft offered a “new player boost” for their WoD expansion — a service, by the way, that they also sell for $60.00 USD in their store — does not mean it’s the best course of action for a game like Guild Wars 2 with a static level cap and a fairly complicated learning curve for new players.

if i had to guess, he probably wants a way to insta put all of his alt toons at 80, if the motivation is for himself. Some people dont like to put effort into making 80 on mutiple toons, so my guess is he wants a lazymans way to insta 80, even if it costs real money. on the other hand, if his motivation is based on and for, his friends sake, (which I bet will be what he says…) then it is a valid question, but already answered as with all the posts before this one.

If a new player did this(not say ANet will or will not add this option) they will have no level 80 gear, none of the map unlocked, basically they would not be able to play the new content at all, as they would have no coin to buy level 80 gear, and would spend more time.dead than alive as they would not have a clue how the game play works. This would be a useless option for new players Imo. And before anyone says there friends and family could buy them the gear needed, we are talking about quite a bit of gold to kit someone out. Last time I looked it would cost the best part of 50-60 gold for everything. That’s a fair bit of gold to just “give away”.

Yea but they arent called monthlies anymore its daily logins since I can start it in januari and end it in march without having to redo the days I did previous months they arent tied to months at all.

you still must play 28 days to get the final reward, which is 1 month. call it what you want, you dont get it unless you play a months worth of time. so it is a monthly type reward.

Your right its a monthly 3 years out of 4 during 1 month febuary all the other months its a daily login reward since you can start a second run at it before month ends

and during all that time spent playing alone in content that your friends and family have already completed, they will have completed alot of expansion content without you – the point of a character boost is so friends and family can play together in content that none have done yet, and I think it would attract alot of new players to the game.

“I think it would attract alot of new players to the game.” – sure push new players right into maguuma to fight mordrem trolls, -husks and -terragriffs etc. instead of some skelk to learn the game

If you really wanted to play with your friends and family, you could have them help you buy all the crafts to 400. That should get you near level 80 (especially if you start at level 15, which is where the experience curve becomes “slower”). From there it’s a few dungeon runs and you’re good to go.
