Hello, I bought GW2 when it first came out so I got the 5 character slots it came with.

My friend just got the game free which comes with 2 character slots, and I’ve been trying to figure out if buying HoT gives them the 5 slots, or if they have to pay $75 to get one more extra slots, giving them only 3 character slots? Or will it automatically upgrade and give them 6 slots?

And also if anyone knows the deal with inventory slots as well? I have 5 because I bought the base game, and they only have 3.

Can someone help clear this up for me?

They unlock all 5 Character slots and the appropriate amount of inventory slots,

Purchasing Heart of Thorns will give the 5 slots total, purchasing the Deluxe or better edition will give 6 slots, total.

Character inventory slots will be identical to paid editions.

Thanks! That’s sort of unfair for people who already have the base game then huh… I was thinking about getting HoT but I’d basically be paying for the base game a second time. :c

Not really; you’d be paying for the expansion, just like you would with any other game.

No you’re not. The base game was down to $10 anyway on three occasions. Game prices do come down over time. And free to play players have huge restrictions. You still have to buy HoT to get the base game.

This is what WoW does. Once you buy WoW, you only have to buy the current expansion to get access to all expansions. EQ does this too. Why? Because it removes barriers from entry to new players which games actually need to survive.

All MMOs suffer from natural attrition. Without removing those barriers to entry, you soon find no game to play.

If you follow the MMO business at all, you’d realize this is how it moves forward. It’s not any more unfair than the price of any game going down to next to nothing….and that happens all the time.

I think the OP was probably asking a loaded question, as evidenced by their reply further down.

I just came back to GW after 3 years trying to find a suitable MMO replacement. You can only image the items I had waiting on the broker! I’ve noticed without HoT my game is severely limited (I do have the paid original however). Is there any speculation on when the price may come down? I would love the deluxe ver. for extra slots + diamonds but the price is crazy. Essentially the price of 3 PC games as one expansion. Good grief. Diamonds vs cost of black lion items are also incredibly expensive. I guess I’m just used to paying for cosmetics only.

What non-cosmetic or convenience item are you looking at buying from the Gem Store that you feel is ‘incredibly expensive’?

You can purchase Heart of Thorns from any of the authorized retailers at a discount, often. You can purchase the Deluxe Edition from said retailers, which includes the additional character slot. You can only purchase the Ultimate Edition from ArenaNet directly because of the included Gems, and I doubt the price will change any time soon, if ever.
