Coming Back for HoT - Gear?
Gear hasn’t changed since you left. You get a set of exotic soldier’s gear and exotic is the same best-in-stats gear that it was before. (Well, there’s ascended, but that’s not needed outside of the highest level of fractals and possibly in raids and for some GvG groups.)
You can buy exotics on the TP. It’s also available (in non-salvageable varieties) from karma vendors in Orr or WvW token vendors in your home BL. Or you can craft it.
You can also use the L80 Boost on a character that is already L80 and receive the items, if you so desire. There is a YouTube video about the L80 Boost on the Guild Wars 2 channel, and information on the Wiki (link above).
Good luck.
The equipment you get from the level 80 boost is level 80 exotics, which is technically the 2nd best in the game, with ascended (pink text) being the best. But you don’t need ascended for the vast majority of things – it’s only actually required for Fractals and Raids.
And unlike ascended (which is a very rare drop or has to be crafted by the account using it and is quite expensive) exotics are widely and cheaply available.
The cheapest option is to buy them from the Trading Post with gold. You can also craft it yourself, buy it from Karma vendors in Orr, from WvW vendors with badges of honour, or from the dungeon vendor with dungeon tokens.
And all level 80 exotics are equally good so you can mix and match pieces from different places if you want to.
If you specifically want the set from the level 80 boost and you don’t want another level 80 character you could also use it on your existing character – that will give you the equipment but then the boost will be used up and you won’t be able to get another one.

A great start with armor is the “temple armor”, especially if you have loads of Karma just sitting around doing nothing. 252,000 Karma for a full set. Choose your stats:
I would go with the Orr karma temple gear suggestion. Just following the karma train around for a while and doing your PvE dailies should be sufficient to get you enough karma to gear out your guardian in a week or so. Better yet, you aren’t stuck with soldier stats but you can pick which temple to get which piece from.
I’m sorry, i cant for the life of me recall what Orr is. Thank you all for your suggestions otherwise. I forgot how good the GW2 forums were. Where can i get this karma gear? Do i just need to google search to find it? Again i really appreciate the advice!
Edit: Also how do i get the gear insert tokens that the free gear comes with?
Orr is the set of level 80 maps in the south end of the map, where all the Risen roam.
Click the link from DoctorDing to see which temple has which armor. Be aware that the Temple can’t be under Risen control, it needs to be open to have the karma vendor active. So you might have to join an event chain if you can’t find a map with your desired temple open.
I’m not sure what you mean by gear insert tokens. Runes (armor) and Sigils (weapons)? Salvage them off loot or buy them on the TP (look under Upgrades there). Some cost many gold, most are just a few silver depending on how meta they are this season.
Thank you for the reply. I will look there and yes i guess i mean runes and sigils. What ever the items are that give many more stats to the piece of armor or weapon.
Karma gear is one option, the other is to spend around 20 gold on the market ( a sum easily made in a few days by selling materials ). Take your time to browse the market and pick the cheapest pieces but keep in mind what stats you are going for. For example if your class has easy access to critical chance boosts you can go with more health/armor, high ferocity, average critical stat and still do good damage while being more tanky.
The game is very forgiving with gear. I beat the HoT storyline wearing Vigils Honor armor – simple yellow ‘rare’ set of armor. And as other people pointed out there are sets better than this one available relatively easily at level 80.
