Q: How many mastery points will there be in relation to Masteries?
Masteries are a very exciting concept for GW2. Instead of a traditional approach to just increase a character’s stats, Masteries will create character progression by giving a character more actions and abilities it can do. The versatility of this system is what makes it exciting. However, in order to use a mastery, you need to unlock it with mastery points, which are scattered all over the world behind various forms of content. No matter how much time you spend playing the game, doing PvE and completing events, you will not gain the ability to glide without first investing a mastery point into gliding.
Given this, there is an important question that needs to be answered.
How many mastery points will there be in relation to Masteries?
Let’s say it takes 100 Mastery points to gain and master every single mastery in the game. From this, we have 3 options.
While the exact numbers may not be finalized, this is a question about design rather than numbers. Does Anet want players to have easy access to progression by doing the content they enjoy, does Anet want players to have to play every form of PvE content to progress in PvE, or does Anet want people to specialize in what they can do, and never fully achieve 100% progression?

I think you will have to play every form of pve content in the same way as you have to play all the pve/Wvwpve content for 100% world completion.
I really hope there is a surplus, just to let everyone gain points doing the things they enjoy. Plus it will give people who do everything a slight edge when they release new masteries.
The impression I get from this, is that each play type that I enjoy will only have a very tiny pool of mastery to collect.
Bad design IMO.

Its good that you can get that impression from purely speculative information based on nothing mate

99.9% of stuff on forum is speculation if they dont back it up with a link to were a anet staff said the thing mate ( left out 0.1% since some people are just lazy to link sources )
Im wondering if I will be able to max diffrent masterys on diffrent professions like i can do with wvw points.

I’m pretty sure this is a “no.” I don’t remember when, but maybe 1-2 weeks ago I remember a dev saying that all masteries would be account bound. So once you unlock gliding, you have it unlocked for your entire account.
I assume they do that this way you don’t need to “grind” the mastery on every lvl 80 you have. Remember it takes more than just assigning a point to the mastery line, you also need to get a lot of exp (they still don’t know how much in comparison to gaining a skill point now) to gain a mastery that you’ve unlocked with points.
I also remember them saying you master it once and its open on the account to avoid doing the same thing over.

What they said was that mastery points are account bound but I’m still hoping that what you spent the points on will be character-bound.
If skill points are any indication, there will be more mastery points than needed.
I wonder, as far a alts go if you can earn a mastery point for doing the same thing on a different character. Can I zone complete three times on three characters for three points, or once I earn that point is it considered complete for my whole account?
If mastery points are pooled for the account, but the activities to get them are per character, that’ll leave plenty of room to do the content you like to unlock masteries as long as you have alts.
