Seriously. I don’t think we’ve reached Dead Sea levels of eye-searing, fish-killing, meat-preserving crusty brine yet.

I just counted – there are currently four threads on the front page of this board talking about something other than how immensely pants-bruised people are over the expansion pricing, and this despite a huge E3 showing by ArenaNet and something like eleven hundred blog articles on guild halls, a feature people have been demanding info on since forever ago. This is up from two non-pricing threads the last time I counted.

I get it. You guys are cheesed. Even the gaming news sites have all picked up on how incredibly rustled your collective jimmies are. I fail to see why this brouhaha is such a thing – if you figure fifty bucks, or a hundred bucks, or whatever, is too much to ask? Then don’t pay it. Funnily enough, this conclusion is what all the news site articles I read which bothered to venture an opinion came to as well. The stink is ridiculous, it reflects poorly on “the friendliest, most welcoming MMO playerbase in gaming”, and frankly there’s other crap to talk about.

Either ArenaNet fixes it and they sell preorders, they don’t fix it and don’t sell preorders and thus learn their lesson, or they don’t fix it, they do sell preorders, and clearly it’s not as big a deal as you guys are all making it out to be. Especially when you all know this was Marketing’s brilliant idea and has absolutely nothing to do with the actual dev-side folks you’re all threatening repeatedly.

I’m not telling you to buy or not buy Heart of Thorns. I’m not telling you that you’re entitled greedy jerks, or conversely that you’re being an idiot ArenaNet fanboy too stupid to know better. I don’t care – what you do with your money is on you, what I do with mine is on me, and there’s no reason for either of us to have any opinion on what the other decides.

What I’m saying is that you folks have made the MechWarrior Online forums – a collection of bittervets, salt miners, crusty codgers, and dev-hating megatrolls which cannot be equaled this side of League of Legends – look like a reasonable and respectful community.

I honestly did not think that was possible.

You’re embarrassing the Torment out of yourselves, folks. The ludicrous angstsplosion in this house is a complete and utter turn-off, and if I were an ArenaNet developer I wouldn’t want to talk to a bunch of ragecanoes either.

Settle down. The world is not ending. The sky is not falling. ArenaNet is not the Devil. Keep calm and talk about guild halls already, would ya?

Are you seriously suggesting that people
A. Stop telling anet they are upset
B. Excuse anet for shady business practices and
C. Be happy with everything that is wrong with this preorder fiasco and ignore the issue?

You may as well ask people to be happy with being stabbed in the liver.

I think there’s a few reasons for this:

  • firstly, there is no single issue. and as long as all discussion of the problem gets thrown in a single merged thread, people will keep making threads to try and get their point across.
  • secondly, Arenanet has yet to do much more than say that they’re reading the posts. other than that, we’ve heard nothing on this topic since it popped up, and the more Anet ignores – or is seen to ignore – the problem, the more noise people feel they’ll have to make to get noticed.
  • thirdly, you’ve got a wondefully volatile mix of trolls, overly-passionate people, genuinely concerned players, and the folk who can’t stand being disagreed with.
    * the genuinely concerned players are simply trying to state their opinions, and occasionally discuss them, while also trying to make sure these opinions aren’t misrepresented by the others.
    * the overly-passionate people also do this, but go to much greater lengths to do so, and are happy to try and derail other people’s threads to do it.
    * there are the folk who can’t stand being disagreed with, who can’t just argue their point – they have to be right.
    * and the occasional troll, who’s probably doing what they can to obscure or misrepresent the concerned player’s message, antagonise the overly passionate and disagree heavily with everyone.

the occasional message from Anet saying “we realise the some players object to …” would help reassure people that their message is getting across, and would help reduce the amount of posts, but their current silence is only making this particular issue worse.

and don’t get me wrong – some of the stuff the devs have been throwing out recently is amazing. but if the marketing/management folk at Anet want to keep screwing their fanbase, then the content’s irrelevant to me – it’s on the other side of a purchase – one that the marketing/management side is not selling to me.

Short answer: Yes.

In fact, it is already happening; the salt levels of this forum increase with every day that goes by without a significant response from EAnet.

Isn’t going to get anybody anywhere, even en masse. People are perfectly entitled to their opinions, and the forums exist for the purposes of discussion and feedback.

We have long, long, long since passed the point of ‘discussion and feedback’.

They know they screwed up. Telling them nine hundred thousand more times is not going to improve their response time. I’m fairly certain the actual game devs are fighting Marketing as hard as they can on this one, but trust me – Marketing gets more say than they do in matters like this. NCSoft is not going to be backing codemonkeys over money people, even when things have exploded in their faces like this.

And in the meantime, there are folks in my guild who are almost horrified at the amount of incendiary horse hooey being flung around in here.

Heh, suppose I was just trying to tell people that their blood pressure could use some reduction. All this crazed insanity cannot be healthy for you folks. Maybe give the Poopocalypse a rest and switch to relatively calm and peaceful “This is why I have yet to purchase the Heart of Thorns expansion, ArenaNet. Trust me man, when a dozen major gaming news sites are running coverage of your player base exploding their jeans in sheer dung-flinging nerdrage, you can rest assured the company knows they screwed the pooch.

Now, whether or not you guys are going to get the ArenaNet team groveling on their knees for forgiveness and offering veteran players half-priced expansions with another five free charslots…well, that’s not how business works. You may well get your sixth free slot, but c’mon. Marketing doesn’t let people admit they made a pricing/content mistake. Remember – to a marketing guy, “mistakes” are things which are made only once, by companies which are then about to fold.

Keep your expectations realistic, your objections reasonable in both wording and scope, and your feces in the toilet, and we may yet all get through this poo-rricane without smelling like crap.

My only question is, and whoever can answer this just send me a pm; If I buy HoT since it comes with the core GW2, are HoT & the GW2 core seperate? Is it a download/code sent through an email or is it going to be a CD that I need mailed to me? Is HoT itself just an upgrade that I can add to my current GW2 or do I have to make a completely seperate/new account in order to play it when it is released?

The short answer to the title of this thread is YES. But that salt should be thrown at the corporate side of Anet and not at the devs and forum staff. They little people like us.

Be careful what you wish for, Anet might just give it to you “HoT”

I’d like to emphasize the not throwing poop at each other’s decisions in regards to whether or not they purchase the game. Some are grateful, some are not. It makes it ten times worse when we are pulling each other down for not making the same choice. Have a nice friendly debate with facts, but don’t expect to sway any opinions by putting someone on the chopping block because they don’t feel the same way. The posts put up to thank Anet have been torn up and down and it wasn’t even addressed to the haters. So sad and embarrassing when something like that gets hijacked. I feel like we need to do the Care-bear Stare or something because nothing else is working!

Your list here is missing a lot of the reasons why people are ticked. Watch some videos. Read these forums. Toss out the ones that are just blind rage and vitriol. Look at the ones that are reasonably stating why they think ArenaNet could have handled this better. There are actually things that were handled poorly on ArenaNet’s end. It’s starting to be a trend. In a lot of ways this is a culmination of a lot of different factors.

Decency? Ditch the rose tinted glasses.

The vast majority of all those “Thanks Anet” posts, yours included, were thinly-veiled attempts to directly attack the players, or devalue their arguments. And then you play the victim card as soon as you receive negativity for your attacks. At least the complainers and boycotters have a problem with Anet’s poor decision making, not those that pre-purchased, unless they were directly provoked and/or insulted.

Would a protest march of a 100 be as effective as 10,000?
The more Anet see in the forums they can bet there are multiples of that unhappy who don’t write here. The question then is can Anet afford to gamble on losing a lot of players?

I use forums to give my opinions but I mostly avoid discussing over

First I never wrote a “Thanks Anet” post. Second, I’m not attacking anyone. Have I engaged in friendly debate? Yes.

Also, I am not a victim and never have claimed to be. I can hold my own and have no qualms stating what I see as a reasonable argument. You are welcome to your feelings and views on Anet. I don’t share them, but I also don’t expect you to change yours. If you felt I was trying to offend you, then please accept my apology because I never meant to. I thought a lot about my view on this before I started posting anything on the subject. Do I wear rose-color glasses? No. There are plenty of things I’ve had a problem with as far as Anet decision making goes, this just happens to be one that doesn’t bother me because I feel I’ve thought through it reasonably. You may not agree, and that’s fine.

Also, you may read the negative posts differently because you agree, but there have been some aggressive and hateful people out there without a doubt who fall into the realm of harassing developers as they don’t know who to direct their anger at.

Of course, we’re used to being entitled kittencanoes. When Arenanet gives us quality content for free, we complain about its flavor. When they give us the expansion we’ve asked for, which contains loads of features we’ve been demanding (aka, a prime example of them actually listening to us), we harass them for not pricing it at bargain-bin levels, nevermind that we haven’t been paying a sub for this game and have enjoyed an incredible money value for the past three years.

I would be highly amused if Arenanet ever drops the term “friendliest, most welcoming MMO playerbase in gaming” again. I bloody wouldn’t. Not after this ordeal. And they’d have to be patron saints to not recite that line through their teeth from this point on. This may well be a marketing fiasco, but, even more so, it’s a community fiasco.

Don’t worry, when this fiasco is over we will still be the “friendliest, most welcoming MMO playerbase in the gaming.”

Be careful what you wish for, Anet might just give it to you “HoT”

I gave you the short version of it, but yes, OP did ask for decency without stating it directly but the intent was implied.

Seriously. I don’t think we’ve reached Dead Sea levels of eye-searing, fish-killing, meat-preserving crusty brine yet.

snip

I just counted – there are currently four threads on the front page of this board talking about something other than how immensely pants-bruised people are over the expansion pricing, and this despite a huge E3 showing by ArenaNet and something like eleven hundred blog articles on guild halls, a feature people have been demanding info

Oh, I see. Comparing the community to the worst trolls he could think of was all in the name of decency.

My bad.

Opinions aren’t ‘like it is’. They’re opinions. You might feel strongly about it, but if you use it to insult other people, expect to be called on it.

Didn’t you ask for people to be nicer to each other in another thread? How do you reconcile that with this behaviour (OP’s)? Because they look like polar opposites to me.

Edit: This one.

I reconcile it with the fact that he’s not attacking a specific individual. He’s calling out the community on bad behavior. And even if I’m included I agree with the assessment.

Edit: Also I agree, he could have said it nicer but I think this was more memorable

So as long as you agree with his point he can say whatever? I strongly disagree. Generalised mudslinging is not something to laud.

No, he can say whatever whether I agree with him or not. I didn’t see it as a personal attack or even generalized mudslinging, rather everyone has gone bat-kitten-crazy and it’s driving me crazy, calm the hell down. Two different people can read the same thing, one viewing it as an attack and take offense, the other just takes it as verbal diarrhea with a valid point in there. That’s the problem with reading something on the internet, you can’t see the intent behind the words often times, you have to read between the lines if they aren’t talented at putting a point up quickly and directly.

First you argue that you can’t see intent, then you suggest that you need to read between the lines.

Your argument falls apart when you use one measuring stick for people you agree with, and another for people you disagree with.

My reply was not nearly as strongly worded as his, but you label it incendiary, yet defend his post with your interpretation of what he might have meant, disregarding the actual inflammatory language he used.

If you are unable to concede that, we better stop here. No point in debating an issue if you’re going to insist on double standards.

Yours was incendiary when you labeled him personally as a troll. And I think this is a huge misunderstanding indeed and you are misconstruing my words. So yes. I think we are at a stopping point.

Just as a point of fact – I’d intended this thread as a faint, feeble attempt at saying to the community in general: “Do you guys have any idea how ridiculous you all look?”

Yeah, I was frank and didn’t really pull my punches much, but trust me, man – this was not me being insulting. You’d have known if I was really trying to razz people. The last time I did, I got infracted halfway off the board. Heh…this place doesn’t forgive nearly as much trash talk as MWO does. Mostly, I figure that being polite, formal, and attempting to gently alert people to the fact that this place is starting to kinda resemble a rabid monkey pit was going to end up with two replies asking me “what’s your point?” before it falls off the page, and if I really went nuts it’d get me infracted again and possibly banned.

This was me trying to strike enough of a balance to not get modslapped while still managing to crack through the armor of indignation so rampant around here. Seems to have almost worked – thread’s still here, no nasty PMs from the mod staff. Though it is mostly two folks so not quite the perfect balance. Oh well! Lessons for next time.

Wait until Anet reveals that the xpac contains 1 zone with 5 maps, 2 living stories, revnant, guild halls, and 1 new boss to kill.

Then not only will the naysayers of HoT be salty but the pre purchasers will be salty too!

Not even sure what you mean, really?

I mean, I get it. You’re cheesed off and you’re wondering why I’m calling people out on being hooligans instead of talking about guild halls, which is fair. In answer, I will state that I amn, in fact, talking about guild halls – with my guild. Which has its own personal forum and other communications tools and does not generally spend any time in this forum as this forum is prone to…well, stuff exactly like this latest idiocy, if rarely quite so widespread.

I don’t really need to talk about guild halls here, since none of you folks are in my guild or, divines willing, ever will be, but after seeing several solid days of pretty much nothing except people being screeching ragemonsters over this pricing issue…well, I was bored enough during some downtime at work to see what I’d get if I wrote something up informing ‘The Community’ that they were being just a twitch overdone about this mess. I mean yeah, it’s the Internet, instant nuclear conflagrations of anger are the norm, but this has gotten kinda ridiculous.

Frankly, the thread’s gone much better than I figured it would. Only a few pointless snark-offs and no marauding flame ogres. Not bad at all, especially by current forum standards. I will admit to being (very) mildly impressed – seems there’s more rationality left here than I’d figured after all. I stand corrected and admit my fault.

looks like the next overused word in the gw2 community is “salty”

It’s coming in a close third behind “Entitled” and “White Knight”!

…don’t forget “Toxic”
