Having done a lot of DS lately, I’m wondering if there is a reason why squad 2 always gets saddled with the pods in most maps. Since you’re all just running around to make a full circle, why not have everybody attack both targets while they’re there and then split like always into two groups once both collectors and pods are down?

Is there some kind of benefit to doing it the other way instead that I’m missing here?

If the main circling group stop to do the pods as well as the preservers, there’s a chance they won’t make it back to the first pod before the preserver respawns and restores it. Having the first group deal with the preservers and the second group deal with the pods is more a reliable way of doing it.

You could split up the zerg to kill the pods (my guild sometimes does that for the final pod in order to allow the boss group to engage earlier), but even something as simple as that requires a level of coordination/discipline that most pugs don’t have. Usually a split zerg = reset.

The positioning of preserver spawn also influences the effective danger of circling that route. North for example always feels easier to circle because you can quickly reach the next preserver. The only downside is that if the third one takes long it’s a long run back to the first.
