So, um. The main arguement for why nights in GW2 can’t be darker is that players would have problems seeing stuff. Okay, but… Could the nights in Verdant Brink be at least a bit darker than they are now? I’m using dark shaders from graphic mods and the nights still are way too bright.

Too dark? Huh? But… Have you guys ever been to Dry Top? Have you ever encountered a sandstorm? You can barely see anything, which is a good thing – it’s the map mechanic and it’s meant to be immersive and infulence the gameplay. And uh well, it totally does. Not only it changes the map event gameplay but also the way you approach enemies or traverse through the sandy fields. It’s a good thing. It’s a very good thing. Why not do the same in Verdant Brink with the night / day mechanic? Please, those nights maybe are darker than the others in Tyria but urgh, they’re still not dark enough.

How do you guys feel about the nights in Verdant Brink? Are they dark enough for you or am I the only one thinking stuff needs to be darker?

// oh, one more thing. Can we have more vine pierced corpses in Verdant Brink? I was really counting on seeing those and I haven’t found any. :C

I kinda agree with OP.

I played for over a year unil notice gw2 have a day/night cycle, and I only noticed that when I watched a timelapse on youtube.

Still, by what I could see on gameplays of the last beta, the HoT night does indeedly looks darker than any other area of the game, and I found it amazing. But, I think I ain’t against the idea of it becoming even more darker and fearful.

PS: I remember the first time I entered a mini-dungeon in lornar pass if I ain’t wrong, and it is everything so dark that I was afraid of even walking too fast and end up falling, or finding a champion enemy. It was one of my best experiences into this game, and it really drawed me in the game.

What if it’s the Exalted? It would totally fit the Mursaat god theme.

If it’s that big of a deal for you just turn down your gamma setting. You can make your whole screen black if you want.

I would never want it as dark EQ, everquest nights were pitch black and impossible.

But it could stand to be darker.

Funny thing. The lack of visibility during sandstorm is definitely one of my least liked features of that zone.

Good, I hate not seeing anything too, really. But it adds immersion, it makes it feel like you are in an actual sandstorm.

Darker nights shouldn’t be an issue – Simply implement a “lamp slot”.

The lamp would be connected to the belt (Think Zelda: A Link between worlds) and could be toggled to create an illuminated Area around your character. That way you can always turn it on whenever you need light.

Also you can add skins to customize the look (=Profit) if you want to please the masses.

There’s no argument against that idea actually. It pleases both fronts (“we want darkness”/“we won’t”) and it’s already doable ingame (Using a flamethrower/balth backpiece/whatever).

Maybe a bar in the graphic options to darken the nights up to the level of Snowblind fractal would be nice… and, of course, glowing eyes, moving shadows, and night sounds (owls, wolves ecc) XD

Definitely agree with this sentiment. You can hardly notice the difference between day and night. I recognize that some people prefer it that way because they don’t want to deal with difficulty seeing at night, but can’t their be a simple option for that? “Enable Dark Nights” in the graphics option menu.
Nights don’t have to be pitch black. We’re not talking about obsidian sanctum dark room levels of vision here. Just dark enough to actually notice.

Part of the reason I have Royal Ascalonian weapons is to tell what time of day it is in certain zones. Glowing? Night time. Normal? Day.

Who needs lamp? My dual FDS light up all the darkness for me just fine. I laugh at Weyandt every time he mocks be because he turned the light off. I can still see all the rocks.

I agree that night time should definitely be more obvious. Although i really dislike the sandstorm. I find it really unpleasant and uncomfortable on the eyes. Just having a darker map is completely different though.

That’s what I said :p It’s possible to work around darkness already, they should just drop the “people won’t be able to see” argument and give a general way to work with it ^^

I just want an underground map that is a network of caverns that have a few lit rooms connected by long stretches of tunnels that are near pitch black. So you’d better bring your torches or Fiery Dragon Swords to see where you are going. Maybe catacombs under Divinity’s Reach, a Destroyer infested former Asura colony, or a deep sea cavern with glow in the dark coral and water pools. It would have a real Silent Hill survival aspect to it.

Agreed! …and that should be the slogan for HoT.

This game is too pretty. We should lock the devs in a room and make them watch Game of Thrones marathons until they understand what war looks like.

…and it doesn’t look like a Tigger Backpack.

…it does look like fire, darkness and burning mordrem at the stake! We could have mordrem campfires, and use their severed arms for torches as we wander into the VERY dark jungles.

Honestly, torches are one of the best things this game has going for it. An environmental weapon/torch that non-torch classes can carry and throw on the floor for some lightning, would make dungeon crawling epic.

…and that could be one less space in people’s inventory, and we know how much Anet loves that.

The human gods are false gods, there is only one god, the god of light, and we pray to him, for the night is dark, and full of terrors…

The only way to play the engineer is to exploit it.
Playing the engineer “as intended” is simply not viable.

People actually have a problem getting around in the sandstorm? I mean, what? You have visibility out as far as you ever need for combat. How in the world does that “affect how you approach enemies”?

I mean, darker nights would be cool, and that very concept of it only being in the distance could be applied to them like it is in FFXIV , but still, don’t claim it’s something it’s not.

Its not a problem of getting around or being able to see (at least for me). Its a problem of it being unpleasant on the eyes. I find myself instinctively squinting at the screen during a sandstorm. I suppose thats immersive in a way. Just thats one weather type i would rather not have be so immersive.

I like that idea for darker nights. It doesnt totally ruin visibility and it keeps things very clear close range. While also making it really obvious that its night time.

I think mechanics like this work better in short bursts, but not as map-wide implementations that act as a mechanic for a whole zone.

I love the darkness in that JP in the mists. It’s awesome. Would I want a map to function similarly like that every time it was night? No thanks.

While nights are indeed not any dark, I have to point at an important difference between the sandstorm and a dark night. Dark game areas don’t go well with real lights, like the sun or lamps in your room.

I played Everquest back in the day and they had really dark nights. You needed a light source to see, especially if you were trying to navigate underground.

I think the darkness can add something to the game but it can also be incredibly frustrating if it’s overdone. It’s important to find the right balance.

Yeah I totally agree, I would enjoy something in between Dry Top cave darkness and normal Tyrian night. I really enjoy total darkness mechanics like those in Borderlands JP or caves in Dry Top. Having more dark caves would be totally okay but if nights were that dark… UGHH. Let’s not go there… :P

The only place I notice night in any way is Ascalon.

The game doesn’t have visible day/night cycle and any dynamic weather (or well, even static rain/wind outside of very, very, very few locations), but strives to be “Living World”.

I know it’s a story work, but weather effects would help a lot and make places less stagnant after first run.
