Me being me, the moment I heard about the revenant, I was designing and discarding all sorts of possibilities for character appearance and backstory.
What sorts of designs and ideas have you come up with for your Revenant?

In my case, two ideas stuck, and so, when the revenant comes out, I’ll be making two characters.

Left-hand charr is “Asynda the Harlot,” an ex flame legion pleasure slave, who allows spirits to possess her body for various purposes. (kind of like Aidane from the Summoner King series if anybody is familiar)
Right hand charr is “Kione Abysmfall,” ex Blood Legion soldier after she went insane and lost her mind to the mists.

Interesting, but you might want to reconsider the Harlot part of the name. It may be an old term but it’s meaning is known and if reported by someone, you will likely either get a forced name change or a suspension.

I don’t have a name for my Revenant yet, but she’ll be a female Charr.

As part of the Charr’s involvement in the battle against Mordremoth, the Black Citadel deployed a load of warbands to take part in the battle. Her warband was one of these, and at some point during the HoT arc, she unlocks her powers as a Revenant. (Not quite sure how, considering we don’t even know how the Revenant comes to be.)

Haha well, initially I wanted to call her Asynda the Whor* but I figured they’d make me change it.
I’m hoping people will care less about Harlot.
If not, I can just thesaurus-search less obvious names for that profession. Fingers crossed though XD

Floosy is always a good one. Or you could go upper class and call her Escort, which some people might not even catch the real meaning of. Or scifi and call her Companion, which might be too long, but if not might again fly under some people’s radar.

Why do you want your Gladium to be a prostitute?

I’ll be making mine Human Male, I have the basic physical design, but I’m not sure about the appearance yet. His name will be Scythe, last name tbd.

I really hope Revenants don’t get staff, because I simply cannot afford the scythe skin.

i was going to go for a skimpy human male, but there are way too few skimpy male armors (i don’t even know why i want it, TBH. just thought it would fit the refenant), and i dislike all of them. just give me a cuircass with no sleeves, kitten it.

but i don’t have a norn character, and as much as i dislike the female norn voice, i like her customization options (especially now that there are enough warrior-like faces instead of pretty doll faces) and i love norn cultural armor. so when i saw “revenants throw hammers around”, i was sold on the idea.

i just wish i had a character slot to play doll with one so i can decide on a look (i don’t have a single norn). if someone would send me 100g, i’d convert it into gems and get one ASAP

A friend and myself decided to make Sylvari. Partially because HoT seems like a good time to be playing one for lore reasons, but also because out of 9 characters, both she and I only have 1 Sylvari (3 charr, 3 Asura, 2 Norn, 1 Sylvari for my part.).

I already designed mine (and helped with her’s.). His name will be Rohan (keeping the “title”/nickname to myself.). Born when the Nightmare Court was in it’s early stages his dream was tainted by the Nightmare, leaving him with feelings of confusion and distrust. Very soon after leaving his pod he simply wandered off, seeking out the locations of the various atrocities he’d seen in the dream. In each place he visited he found the light in the darkness; flowers where corpses had rotted, ponds and streams where the land had been rent, festivals held where horrors had once taken place. He learned to appreciate the little things in life, and how good can come from even the darkest acts. He also has some memories from Sylvari I’d made in the past and either deleted because Beta, or because I wasn’t terribly fond of them. (A Sylvari Ranger named Tauburn who died fighting Risen, and a Sylvari Necromancer who was once a Nightmare Court “Recruit” but managed to escape part way through the torture.).

Well for role play purposes, the story of a Charr prostitute slave might not work. If they are like the big land mammals, they likely go into heat and then at most, once a year. If they have long lived dependent cubs, it may only be once every 2 or 3 years. Since the males see the females as sexually attractive at that time, they may be completely uninterested in female Charrs at other times. By making a female Charr with a prostitute back history, your likely applying human sex roles to them, not Charr sex roles.

“Charr on occasion mate for life, but most relationships are more casual than that. Families are recognized but adult charr have very little contact with their parents or offspring, but sometimes keep tabs on each other for events which could reflect back on the family’s reputation. As soon a cub is weaned, around being a year old, they enter a fahrar of one of their parents’ legion. "

This at least covers how long they hold onto the cubs for, and there is a short story on the wiki which gives at least some insight to their relationships. There’s also some NPC’s in the Citadel where one Charr hits on another, or speaks of them in context related to relationships/mating. From this I think it’s fair to say that they probably don’t go into heat and are just very casual about their partners, some more so than others.

That said given the Flame Legion views woman as only good for cooking and offspring, it’s not strictly out of the question they might have some….“communal” females picked from the attractive ones who couldn’t cook worth a kitten .

Alternatively if they did go into heat perhaps they set aside some particularly attractive females as “rewards” for the Soldiers/Officers who have done particularly well in the last few months.

I’m planning on rolling a male asura. No name yet but as a character he studied the very nature of the eternal alchemy and how specific individuals influenced it, and why.

In his studies it was interesting to him that he was able to contact; and latter channel; the powers of the Margonite entity Mallyx and not an un-named hero known to have defeated him in combat.

There were in fact a multitude of nameless heroes, all human, specifically during the events of the Flame-seeker prophecies and the Nightfall of Elona. However his own research turns up that history seems to have forgotten everything about these heroes other than what they did. Even more astounding is that their companions often ARE named. The best place to find these answers? The Mists.

This of course drove him to study everything he could about the mists and the powers, souls, and denizens resided within them. He knew of the Mistlock Observatory but that was more focused on the events in the past. He wanted to know the people. Who where they? Why where they like that? And how… how could he harness that power for himself.

I think the revenant has some excelent RP capabilities for any GW1 fans to bring in why the original characters seemed to have been left out of history

Learning that hammer on Revenant will be a power option, I decided at least one revenant will be a norn with Braham’s armor and Icebreaker hammer from Hall of Monuments. I’ve already taken the liberty of reserving the name The Wintersmith for this wonderful creation.

I’ll likely make a second revenant which will be a human male with the generic revenant armor set, a dashing young face and clean shave (can’t stand all the Orlando Bloom facial hairs that people like to take). Figure he can be my GW1 ritualist’s descendant.

Any more depth to the roleplay doesn’t really exist.

I’m going to make a silvari revenant with a toxic/plant/infected kind of look to him. Similar to this armor look and coloring but swap the helm out for arahs heavy. The dye/armor gives a fun feel of being part of the jungle opposed to just in it. Can’t wait for revenant to come out, already making an ascended set just for him ha ha.

Why do you want your Gladium to be a prostitute?

She’s spent her whole life trapped in a Flame legion harem. Now that she’s out, that’s the only role she understands for a woman. Indoctrination from childhood is hard to escape.

By making a female Charr with a prostitute back history, your likely applying human sex roles to them, not Charr sex roles.

A prostitute isn’t a sex role in the Free Legions, but in Flame Legion the women are all essentially sex slaves. In fact, the Flame Legion has the most human sex roles of any group in Tyria—at least how they’ve been through most of human history.

If you plucked a slave woman out of the 1,000’s and brought her to 2015—it would take a long time for her to understand female equality concepts. And that’s essentially the case with this character—but to an even greater degree—because in a lot of ways Tyria is more gender-equal than the modern world. Free Legions charr would be completely baffled by Asynda’s behavior—which is why I’d have her servicing in Lion’s Arch, and not in Ascalon.
So long as I develop Asynda’s mental state, background, & character properly, I think it fits in fine with roleplay.

I think I see what you’re saying, however the human terms sex slave or prostitute have human meanings which I doubt carry over to Charr culture. The Charr might not even have a word or a cultural definition for a female who mates outside a legally binding ceremony (a harlot) and calling her that has connotations that may be invalid when applied to Charr culture. It may be something that no female Charr would ever apply to herself and may think of as a ridiculous concept that females who mate without a ceremony first have a name for that.

The charr wouldn’t call her a Harlot, I know. At best they’d call her strange, crazy, or a really stupid money scammer, and at worst they’d call her a flame sympathizer or a heretic.
However, the concept of a prostitute DOES exist in other Tyrian cultures, and in the melting pot of Lion’s Arch, I’m sure every citizen comes to understand its meaning. Asynda doesn’t call herself “Harlot,” and wouldn’t introduce herself as such in an RP scenario—she just calls herself “Asynda.”
However, the people of Lion’s Arch may well refer to her as ‘Harlot,’ especially those for whom the term has meaning. Regardless, Free Legions charr will be confused by and scornful of her—but that confusion and cultural incongruity are specific reasons WHY I chose to make Asynda what she is. She’s meant to be isolated from her own people.
My ex-soldier Revenant, Kione, will be written to experience that confusion and lack of understanding when she encounters Asynda—but as sharers of the same power, they will be forced to help each other in spite of backgrounds so different they can’t understand each other.

That would, in my mind at least, be less accurate than Harlot. Yes, her experiences have restricted her worldview, but she’s free of the Flame Legion—more free than she ever has been. Unfree wouldn’t accurately describe her situation—which is both free, and restricted. And it’s too nonspecific. For the same reasons, Unbound wouldn’t work, because just as she isn’t truly enslaved, she isn’t truly free either. And her role is too passive for her to be ‘Heretical.’
I don’t think there is a descriptor that could possibly portray what & who she is with such depth—and that is true of every character name. ‘Harlot’ describes what she does—it’s just a fact. Finding out why she does it, and who she is, requires delving deeper—that’s true of every character.
If Asynda’s name were in terms the typical charr could understand, it would be along the lines of: “Asynda-the-weird-gladium-who-tries-to-make-people-give-her-money-to-hook-up.” And, well, there’s the name length limit to consider :P

Ultimately, if some RPers see ‘Harlot,’ and assume I’m a doofus who doesn’t understand charr lore, that’s fine by me. Most charr would see Asynda and consider her a doofus too XD

While I haven’t heard anything about prostitution among the Charr, they do have sex with strangers/people they’ve just met for enjoyment purposes.

and theres no evidence that Charr function like animals, having a heat period, in fact, theres more evidence to suggest the opposite. Just because they have fur and a tail, doesn’t automatically rubber-band them into the “animal” category.

Considering particular story events take place at designated points in time, certain Charr dialogue with each other suggests they’re willing to have sex all year round, and the fact the entire female Charr work force doesn’t take a few months off during the point every year to have cubs. Considering how they’re culture is structured, its highly unlikely for the same reason, as it would significantly diminish the amount of ground troops they have for battles. If they did have a heat period, and had to take a particular point of every year off for heat/birthing, their society would be structured differently to allow that.

Sorry for derailing thread, but this is a speculation that comes up a lot, and people just look at all the evidence suggesting against the idea of heat periods, disregard it, and go back to the idea of “Fur + tail = animal = animal sex logistics confirmed”, when its likely a lot more complex than that, fortunately.

Ultimately, if some RPers see ‘Harlot,’ and assume I’m a doofus who doesn’t understand charr lore, that’s fine by me. Most charr would see Asynda and consider her a doofus too XD

I think they’re more likely to look at it and think “Ah! Erotic Roleplayer! run away!”. Unless its one of those bordello guilds, which I think theres a few of now. Asynda would fit right in.

and Asynda sounds like a totally all right Charr name. Although a lot of people think “If an NPC doesn’t have the name already, it doesn’t count.”, ‘Asynda’ follows all of the naming conventions for female Charr, and it even sounds Charr. and its nice when people create their own names for characters that are believable. It alleviates from the onslaught of “Rytlock, Bonfaaz and Kalla” which feels like everybody and their mother has a Charr character named like that.

Gotta love Wintersmith, really. Terry Pratchett did a great job – and it wasn’t too bad of a parody of The Snow Queen to boot. I’ve always sort of felt human or norn would fit best for Revenant – they’re already largely spiritual, while the Mists exist for everyone I’m almost certain that being able to channel the magics of the Mists could belie the thought that they need to be somewhat religious – for the other races it’d be like selling ice to an eskimo.

Mind you it’s not canon and has little lore value, it’s just something I’d figure makes sense on a cultural level. I might even make a sylvari revenant too, depending on how much diversity I enjoy on the class – so I certainly do not intend to follow my own line of logic. I guess I’m just curious where you drew the conclusion that female norn/charr would fit the best?

Like many Sylvari, the young Etheus was prone to love and love passionately. The death of his Amaranth, however, drove him to the brink of Nightmare. He could sense his corruption, and he knew what was coming. And so he beseeched the Mother to allow him into the Dream to rebuild Amaranth from the fragments of her memories left in the Dream. She did not grant his request.

Unsatisfied with her answer, Etheus stepped through the nearest portal to the Mists, where he fought in the Mist War – alone and intending to die in battle. Time and time again, he was attacked, but through stealth, cunning, and knives, his attackers fell. He traveled further and further from the exit portal, and, by some strange turn of luck, he discovered a way to break out of the war-torn zone and explore new areas of the Mists.

Eventually, he came to realize that the Priory’s interpretation of the Mists was correct. It was an amalgamation of intertwined planes – including the Tyria that we know. And, by necessity, the Dream was but one of these. This knowledge drove him to explore the Mists, surviving horror after horror until he reached his destination.

His time in the Mists changed him. So many opposing ambient magics turned his verdant skin to a dark grey. Each trip to a different plane sent magic through his veins, causing them to pulsate with an unearthly silver glow. He wasn’t a Sylvari anymore in the strictest sense, though he could still hear Mordremoth’s call.

He viewed his transformation as the price of his reward, for he had already convinced himself of his success. And, indeed, when he finally arrived in the Dream, he did succeed. He was able to restructure Amaranth’s memories into a cohesive mind, and after that, it was only a matter of time before she would be reborn in the Grove.

Etheus knew that his success was incomplete however. The Amaranth he restored would be a shadow of her former self in some ways. He hadn’t rebuilt her perfectly. He could only guess at what shapes her personality would take on. This was an acceptable loss to him. It is better that his love live at all than to remain as nothing more than a set of guiding memories in the Dream.

The voice of Mordremoth laughed in his mind, and he knew that he damaged the Dream – and greatly. It wasn’t a surprise. He wasn’t exactly careful when he severed hundreds of connections to remove and combine the proper memories.

Corruption manifested itself as the shadow of a dragon. Etheus killed it, as he did many such horrors in the Mists, but its corruption lingered. The Sylvari would suffer for his actions. And frankly, he didn’t care.

With his task done, he left from the same way he came, steamrolling through the Mists with the powers he developed along the way. He was something else now. With the essence of the Mists themselves coursing through his body and the voices of legendary heroes in his mind, he felt unstoppable – and perhaps he was.

Here’s my upcoming Revenant.
All skins owned and 60 Tomes of Knowledge (plus level 20 birthday scroll) waiting for his arrival on Tyria.
Soon™…

I’m not really sold on the gloves, shoulders, or helmet, so those might change. But Phalanx Warplate, Vigil Tassets, and Paws of Koda are definitely staying.
Chances are, I might just keep using the Revenant Blindfold at level 80. I also want to see what the other two cosmetic choices are for starting Revenants. If it solves my shoulder and glove issue at the same time, I’ll just make a 2 second alt and delete them after it registers in my wardrobe.

(colors definitely aren’t final either, I just don’t have the patience to preview dyes like that. It’ll be black and purple most likely, but not in that awful arrangement)

The rest of that month, and part of the next one will be a fluttery mess. Then the next new thing will happen and everyone will get over it.

Of course, the fact that they’re Gem Store items might reduce their use slightly. Unlike the spinal blades that everyone has because you could just make them on a whim.

That’s a good point, I hadn’t even thought of. Maybe there will be hoods for heavy armor, that would be cool.

nothing odd about this. this thread is showing, everyone and their mom will have these silly wings when they come out, and they’re by far the most obstrusive back piece (or equipment) they ever added. i dread the norn mesmers having these wings.
