I have four alts I bought when gw2 was 10$ at one point. I was interested in upgrading a few to HoT but then I thought why should I upgrade those alts when I could buy the whole game for the same price and get a whole new account instead.

It’s been less or more than a year since HoT came out. I don’t want to pay full price for an upgrade when I could get more out of buying a whole account. Also I know it was on sale for 25$ which is super awesome and nice but still..

I hope I haven’t missed anything and there actually is a discount somewhere I’m not seeing.

  1. Wait for the next sale, which may or may not be happening during the holidays.
  2. Purchase from a third party vendor on the partners list. https://www.guildwars2.com/en/retailers/#UnitedStates-physical You might have to wait for a sale there, also.

Here’s why I would upgrade an existing ‘alt’ account (rather than buy a new one for the same price):

  • I have limited time and attention. I don’t think I could handle 3 accounts.
  • If I had two accounts, it’s possible I’ve put time into the 2nd and I wouldn’t want that “wasted” by starting a new one.

On the other hand, if all I wanted was things like login rewards and teleport-to-friend anchors (or mesmer backups), then, I might buy it outright.

If you get a fresh account, you don’t carry over the progress from the previous account. So think of the extra cost as a Continuance Fee or a New Game+ going into the expansion.

Otherwise, take Indigo’s advice if price is a concern. Scout for good (legitimate) deals, and you should find one at some point.

Many alts; handle it!
