I would like to be able to do it by playing through half of maguuma or get the option at half the new story line, so it comes natural and actually feels like you are learning the new ways of fighting.. instead of just wandering the world endlessly and never get to play maguuma because I have to farm the whole map with my revenant first…

This should concern you, even if you have plenty of points. Because it’s plenty of points… for now.
What if they come out with new elite specs after these, as is the current plan? Will you have enough points then? Will there be enough points in the game to get everything unlocked on one character, even? The time to worry about this is now, before people lose their heads over this.

Am sure it will be hero points, we don’t know how many the elites will require. Have heard numbers from 150 to 250 from various players.
Here is a map of only Hero Point Challenges thruout the game. (I’ve got 15 toons to finish up on since only 1 of mine has map completion). So that is what I’m doing before HoT is released. Not doing hearts/POI’s

I hope 100 points max. 175 is a lot to have to unlock for each class or people with a lot of ults. That’s nearly needing current world completion at the moment to unlock all core stuff plus elite specizalation which is just insane. Considering it’s a major selling point on the game I hope they don’t lock it behind a crazy number.
I’m buying hot for herald personally. Not to do hero point farming in core game

I think that they said that you can unlock all standard specs and skills with just the HPs that you get from leveling to 80, plus 60 more. Each elite spec would just be a few more.

That’s the old version. It was 65 HP on top of turning 80, but they changed it so you’d get full unlocks just by getting to 80.
Now no one knows how many HP it will take to unlock the elite spec, or what esle you might have to do before you can spend the HP on it, though it seems the final HP to spend will be on skins, not skills/traits. A datamine said 175 points on top of being 80 (if you spent all your level 80 HP gains), which is a substantial portion of the HP available in Pact Tyria. So far no method for WvWers has been unveiled so yes, for now, the only way to be sure you have enough HP as of launch is to run around the maps getting them.
You do not, however, need to get anywhere near map completion. For example, Harathi has … 6? … hero challenges, two easy ones in the se corner, one easy one in the sw in a cave, and the last three along the north edge. You can ignore vast swaths of the map and not even get all waypoints in order to collect all six.
It does take some time. Even being an unfeeling lump and charging past all the NPC’s begging for aid, I can spend a few hours getting around 20 points in a few zones thanks to needing to run around unfogging and collecting wps on my less explored alts. But nothing like needing to fully do the map.
I have a number of alts I’d like to position for Elites, but at this point I’m focusing on the ones that I most likely will want to play. I already had world completion on Thief and Support Guardian, so Daredevil and DH are covered. I love Reaper so much I took one of my necros around, she’s covered. And Scrapper looks cool enough I’ve been trotting around on my engineer. Four more to work on after that, if time and energy permit …

In another thread I asked if we would get unlocks from things we already did (achieves, certain bosses, etc) and was told yes, they would count. I just 80ed my necro and since I did hero challenges I had an excess at the end that went poof. I am not sure if those will return or what.
I don’t believe, imo, its reasonable to believe the new elite specs will require up to 150 HP to fully unlock. Anet stated they will be adding new elite specs in the future, so 150 HP is just too much of a requirement, considering I didnt see any HP scatted around the new map on the last beta. Anyway, you can always save up even more HP, by simply not unlocking every skill and trait possible, only the ones you currently use. For example on my current ranger, I have 150 HP, and only 30% World completed, yet.
From chats with guildies, I was left with the impression, some people expect the new elites will require huge amount of HP, just for being elite specs. They may aswell require you the same amount of HP as the current specs to fully unlock.

What we know?
1) It’s gonna be Hero Points for sure
2) It’s gonna cost between 80 and 170 HP. The minimum value come from the minimum possible compare to our current spec and skills. The maximum value come from datamining.
3) You don’t need to do world completion, just Hero Challenge. It’s gonna take between 4 and 10 hours for someone to unlock a Elite Specialisation on a character with zero Hero Point left. But since most people usually have some HP left after they unlocked everything else, it probably gonna take less time than that.
4) It’s gonna need to be done on all your characters if you want all Elites.

I like the optimism of 4-10 hours per toon to get 80-170 HP from maps you’ve never been to before..more realistic for non-rushers is a month or two of game time just spent doing HP per toon, repeat 20 times if you want to cover all your alts.
As for ‘play how you want’, that’s thoroughly flushed down the toilet now for wvw players, it’s become ‘grind like a Korean’.

As a new player with one character to 80 and another one in the works, all I can say is that I love the pve map, its casual, relaxing and fun. However I cant see myself wanting to do this 4-8 times over.
Something as simple as just getting all the waypoints everywhere is already getting a bit on the tedious side. Let alone completion, which I know is optional.
I am however hitting every challenge I see, or just about (a few cave maze ones I didn’t bother figuring out how to get to the challenge)
Something simple like having waypoint account based if they are intending us to farm up all these map hero challenges would be fantastic…hell I want that now, the only real advantage is that I can hop onto a newer character and join people wherever without going “give me a few hours I haven’t explored that area yet”, I don’t have every portal between maps memorized yet so some areas become a pain to just get to if I haven’t explored all the edges of the map next to it for example.
Anyway. I recall hearing youll be able to farm HP in WvW, which is fantasic, as that’s something I want to participate in but seems to be counter productive to someone trying to build an account up, at least ill get hero points when I’m sick of doing the pve map.

But that is total bullkitten.. I dont want grind all the points which each of my level 80 charackter (who by the way all have 0 hero points because I maxed everything, and dont tell me I should not have done that.. that would be a stupid argument).
and also story wise it is just stupid to implement it this way.. hey so you spend 100 hours to unlock all hero points with your 10 charackter? thats great! here have the elite spec unlocked right at the release of hot for grinding so much…
Unlocking it through the story would have made much more sense…
Thanks to Solaxo though for providing this map, this should be really helpful at least..

Well it sould not be easy to unlock. I am totaly fine with 100 HP per character on top of 80. And HP in WvW would be realy good.
When your main char gets troubles and needs to grind, then you can get upset but i don´t think this will happen and i hope its no easy unlock for alts. So 150 per char would still be no Problem. More might get to grindy.

It’s not optimistic, it’s what it took me. I have 8 characater with 150 pts remaining. I’ll do the remaining 20 if needed after the expansion.
If people have some problem, there is a gentlemen doing event for that and they are pretty much in the same time ratio as me. As a Guild Leader myself, I’ll take that idea to create a similar type of event for my guild.

It sounds like the amount for skills / traits will be low (50-70 like 1 trait line + 1 skill line now) but another 100+ for the cosmetic rewards. They want us playing these elite specs asap if we want to. (Like my boosted rev is going to be not going down mallyx and ventari lines until i finish the herald line if i can)

The thing is you cannot, so far as I know, skip along the circle of unlocks. So if they have any items interspersed with the skills and traits, you perforce must spend points on those before you can continue unlocking the mechanics. Thus even if you only need 70 points for all your traits and skills you won’t be able to buy them all if you only have 70 points because of required fluff in between.
I don’t mind that, I want the fluff, though I’m glad the big special item is at the end so it becomes a goal rather than an impediment to play. I just think people need to consider how many HP they actually need banked to get to all the useful stuff.

I think “Fluff” would be at the end of the line not interspersed; Arena Net wants us playing these elite specializations as soon as we want to (this includes the herald) so they won’t make it a “grind” to integrate them just one to get cosmetic rewards like the rest of the game (even ascended armor /weapons isn’t that bad now a days)

Yes, give us everything from start!!! Why do we need to level from level 1-80? Play how you want ‘pshht’ rubbish! I want all my 12 characters maxed out becouse it is tedious to do it again and again and again becouse the game is all about maxed out characters and when I have maxed out characters I will start whining that there is only 1h content for this game!!!
Seriously though in my opinion I don’t mind havng Elite specs being behind a little wall of HP, it gives us something to aim for, a reason to go back and play on the old maps. I have 12 characters and most of them have over 80-90% map compleation. I play this game becouse I enjoy it and I enjoy every content of is (Accept southsun survival) so I play all the maps again as long as I enjoy it. It does not take a year to get your hero points and if you actually don’t try to finnish everything in a week you can maby enjoy the old content again. When I play old maps again I usually find people from my guild to play with or some new friends, it realy makes the experience better. Also it one more month before release of the game, instead of being AFK in LA and whining on the forums or whatever you do, go out and earn yourself some HP.
I got alot of HP, I want a reason to use them.

I understand your point, but the simple fact is, that you can’t earn HP by any form beyond 80 but doing the hero challenges, and i think it’s kittened up to expect a WvW player or someone who likes running dungeons allot more, to go and do all these hero challenges. Think beyond yourself for just one second and plz realise that to some people this will be a grind, while others unlock it with their natural gameplay. This is not good.
To be a fair system you need to be able to progress at the same rate, nobody is asking for instant acces. Altough you will probally have it, while some poor WvW player will have to grind PvE for it. If you want to lock it behind something make it so we can only start that progress at HoT, so everyone gets a clean start.

I can understand that but what we… Or alteast I don’t know is how much HP it will cost and how much HP there will be in the new WvW maps.
I didn’t want to Explore WvW maps to get 100% map compleaton and ofcourse WvW players shouldn’t have to do 100% PvE to get Elite Spec I agree. But what I am worried about over all this whining is that it may lead to that there is nothing to aim for, Elite spec will be unlocked the instant you enter Maguuma.
But then it also feels like that Anet never meant WvW to be something to be on the side like PvP, it feels like they ment WvW to be PvE… Becouse I would want WvW to be just like PvP, another game mode where everyone is level 80 and have everything from start, just like PvP but it is not. The point with HP and Specializations is that when we get more spec’s we have to unlock them with HP and in the end all the HP in WvW will not be enough and WvW players will probably need to go to PvE to farm HP anyway. If not… the whole HP thing is just rubbish.
As for dungeon players… Well c’mon, what am I then? Chat player? For the most I do is chat in Guild chat. We need to have hero points too for chatting! Dungeon is PvE thats all I say.
So anyway. Instead of insisting that you get everything for free, ask for Anet to make WvW seperate from PvE, no more Farming EotM to level to 80, no more worries that you wont afford a specialization, no more forced to farm ascended gear outside of WvW and more.

No, you need a system that works for everyone, no offense but giving people who do world completing an edge to people who don’t is not acceptable. I know people who have 1-2 hours a day max, and they are very worried that they will have to spend it doing world completion. Also they need to anounce how it will work, so people have time to prepare, right now this is still a rumor, we need to know.

So just to check “people who play more shouldn’t have an advantage” is your position? How on earth can you structure a game like that except putting caps on progress you can make in a day?
Its a fact of gaming and life that doing more gets you more. Obviously some people will fall a bit behind but they still can progress at their own rate.

Edit: I forgot to quote :P
Why not? By doing Hero Points is playing the content of the game, if Anet where to give everything to everyone just from going from point A to point B there would be no point with hero points. I am sorry to tell you this but there is a reason for hero points and those are for atleast PvE players to play the PvE content.
I myself “only” plays around 1-2h a day, some days can be more. I have played for 3 years and I still enjoy the game, I still have a lot to do, I still have time to do things in the game, I don’t think Anet will shut of the servers anytime soon so there is time and who am I racing against? Why would I care if someone has the “edge” over me? I can understand that some people finds it booring to do it again and again and again with millions of alt characters but still, they wont go away.
(I am ofcourse speaking of only PvE as I have said I agree with the WvW problem but I would want a different solution for that)

No it’s not, my position is that people should be able to do what they want to do->the new content, without having to grind hero points in the old content first, HoT needs to have it’s own way of getting heropoints and right now the new map hasn’t shown that yet, only mastery points. This needs to be uncoupled from world exploration in some way.
These people in my guild don’t want special treatment, they want to be able to play the elite spec after unlocking it, but they do not want to spend time in the normal zones while everyone is playing heart of thornes. If you want elite specs to have progress, sure, make it last until halfway the expansion till you unlock everything, but that progress ABSOLUTELY has to be able to be made playing heart of thornes.
There is not a single positive thing about forcing players to do old content while new content has just come out.

You also mistake my point. It’s not, oh but i want everything to be directly available. My point is that you should not be forced to do old content when an expansion just released, just to get enough points to get your elite spec. Make it a grind, sure, but start the grind, when HoT releases, and start with all people at the same starting point.
The way it looks right now punishes new players, doesn’t give people with 5 times map exploration anything to progress towards on the other hand, and even makes is so new players have to get all the hero points all over the world, NOT PLAYING HoT. This cannot be the goal, since most of these new players right now have been drawn in for specificly HoT.
In short: sure have it be a grind, but have it be the same grind for someone who plays from day one, and a new F2P account that just bought HoT, and start it when hot releases.

I don’t understand why you think you need Elite Specializations to play in Heart of Thorns areas. I am pretty sure some players aren’t enamored with the Elite Specialization coming for their main profession of choice. Are you saying they won’t be able to play HoT, whether they have the Hero Points to unlock it, or not?
If your guildies want to play Heart of Thorns, they can go there right at release day. Just like everyone else (that purchased). If they want Elites unlocked the 5 minutes beforehand, I guess they can make a choice to pick up a few HPs each day while waiting for release…or not…just like everyone else. No one is forced to wait until ‘new content’ has come out to pick up Hero Points.
Whichever, it’s still a choice.
Oh, and as to your edit about ‘new players’: Those new players have to get to L80 before stepping foot in HoT. ‘New players’ should not have access to a pile of scrolls to insta-80, so they would need to level up in maps, anyway. Why should they ignore all the previous PvE maps they have never played to go play the ‘new’ PvE map? It’s all PvE, no?

There is no new content atm, just get them now.. “I don’t want to” can be used against EVERYTHING and has no worth.

It would be nice once HoT releases they reset all of our characters points. that would help me greatly.
I’m actually holding off on filling in mission hero points on my 80s… so that after HoT hits I’ll have the double motivation of getting the HPs and getting easy XP towards the core masteries. I kinda want auto-loot.

and those nice little map event reward bonuses. Some arent much, but some maps are silver doubloons, T6, lodestones and things like that.

you are making stupid assumptions,
1 that everyone reads the forums, and knows how this will work (allot of people will be disappointed when they find out to late)
2 that the way this will work is even clear already
3 that you have somehow earned the right to have these at day one while others don’t, even when some of them may have played more hours then you in a different gametype
4 that i am claiming elite specs are needed, they are flavor tough, and many people will want to play them, even at the cost of missing the new content, but it will cause frustration.
5 That having to do 1 type of content to get a skills and traits is somehow ok
psst you still have a month to get the points.

I know this, you know this, at least 80% of the community has no clue about this, this is why they need to release a blogpost informing how this will work.
This is not a matter of me not wanting to do it, as it currently stands i have enough skillpoints on most of my main characters. I would like some progress to however, and not to be given everything at launch. But the same progress for me as for my brand new GW2 playing friend, i do not want to be ahead of them just because i have world completion characters and he doesn’t.
People arguing that this is ok imo all already have these skillpoints and are unwilling to even for one second put themselves in the shoes of more recent players. It’s selfish and it disgusts me. I would like the elite specs to contain some form of progress, for me and for my friends, starting all from 0 with HoT

If your new friend is dying to play the new spec save some points while leveling – you have enough JUST from getting to 80 to get 3 whole specs unlocked I think (at least – my spare Mesmers with very little world completion have everything).
Tell them not to worry and that if they really want to play Chrono (cause who wouldn’t) suggest they stay their hand on pumping up those Chaos traits.
Everyone will get by in time and I’m sure there will be options to gain hero points in HoT (I believe even we don’t have enough for everything even with world completion so there will be more inside the exp).

I think it would be reasonable for A-Net to just tell us what will be needed to unlock elites, unless they are still working that out. It’s not like that is some kind of ‘spoiler’ that will impact anyone’s fun. On the contrary, it would be a lot more fun to be ready on launch day. I have 17 lv. 80 toons, and some have barely any map completion due to spending all their time in WvW. PvE players would be the ones whining if the unlocks were dependent on WvW content. I want to play elite specs in WvW, but I don’t really think I should need to grind PvE content to do it, any more than I think that a PvE player should be forced into WvW.
