I boosted a character to 80 today, and got enough hero points for all trees except for the new one. Do I have to get the old skill points in old content before doing heart of thorns?

Does heart of thorns content provide hero points?

More than enough. Each HoT hero point is worth 10.

You can get all of them from HoT to max them or a combination of the two. You’ll be something like 30 short if you got all of the old hero points.

Roughly half of HoT’s hero points can be done solo.

There are 3 ways to get Hero Points:

1. Leveling up – You already got all of these when you hit level 80
2. Hero Points on Core Tyria Maps – These give 1 HP each
3. Hero Points on Heart of Thorns Maps – These give 10 HP each, but many require a group of people.

To unlock your elite specialization you will need to do 2, 3, or a mix of 2 and 3, but all combined there are many more than enough.

You will need 250 HP to fully unlock the elite spec which is just 25 hero challenges in HoT

Just play HoT and ask in the map for HP trains. You’ll have your full elite spec in a day.

Yeah it’s possible to do only HoT HP, got my revenant full elite within one evening only in HoT maps after he got lvl 80.

I did another Rev a couple weeks ago and got the elite spec completely unlocked in about two hours.
