Hello!

I was wondering why couldnt anet just make it so we can use the elite spec without giving up any of the 3 previous one? It is called elite specialization after all, but like this, its nothing special. Its supposed to make your character stronger, but it just offers a little bit of different playstyle to each class and nothing else. I cant speak of other classes, but for thief, daredevil gives a bit more mobility, but way less dps, than using critical strikes, trickery and shadow arts…
Maybe there could be 2 elite specs for each class, so we HAVE to make a choice, but still use 3 old spec+ elite spec. Or just simply let us use the elite.

Regards.

And that is what they are meant to do. To give you a different way to play your favourite class. If elite specializations really were stronger than the core specializations, who would ever use the latter?

I think they should have never called them ‘elite’ specializations in the first place. It gives the impression they these specializations are better than the old ones. Which they are not. Maybe some are better, but I haven’t checked them all out. As Sir Alric mentioned, they are just meant as a new way to play your class.

Elite is just a term A-net gave it. It’s not a correct term because, as yous aid it yourself, it does not have an ‘elite’ effect. Its different, and that’s it.

Funnily enough, if A-net had called the ‘Elite’ just ‘Specialisation’ and the core trait lines just that ‘Core traits’ (or something like that), nobody would have expected any overpowering mechanics.
Specialisations always come at the cost of something else, usually more generic skills.

Dunno. It ties up well with Elite skills, not in the sense of “better than the rest” but in the sense that you can only use one at a time. Elite specs will be mutually exclusive if Anet sticks to the concept and develops new ones some day.

Noone, since my suggestion was to allow us to use 3+1.. (Use 3 from the old ones AND the elite..)

Sorry but it doesn’t work that way. Just like the ELITE skills we have are in many case not any more powerful than utility skills and in many cases flat out worse, and many classes, given the chance, would happily trade their ELITE skill for a fourth utility skill.

and thats why that suggestion is really bad thing to introduce….

[but look at it this way – have you played gw1? there were elite skills – you didn’t have to use any to make a valid build but you could have only one at a time and if you actually slotted into one of 8 skills an elite skill… you were buildng your whole build around that skill – its the same with specialisations now – you don’t have to have alite specialisation – but if you slot one it becomes center of your build]

Look at it like this.

They are called Elite specializations because of what they unlock. Unlike the other specializations, you get new skills (regular and elite), new gear (helmets, shoulders, weapons), and of course the new traits and the ability to wield a new weapon.

All of that in one specialization. The others don’t offer any of that except for new traits.

So thus, since it is superior to other specializations in the sense that you get more from it, it is considered an Elite specialization. Thus in order to use it, you must sacrifice a lower class specialization and let the Elite take its place.

It’s not meant to be stronger, it just offers you more than a regular specialization does. And on that note, being able to equip it along with your already chosen specializations, giving you four specializations, would make you indeed stronger. Which is not the path that the Elite specialization is meant to take. It’s not there to make you more powerful, but instead, there to give you more options.

The term “Elite” in the guild wars franchise has always been synonymous with “Unique” in other games. The only thing elite implies is that you can only use 1 of them at a time.

In GW1, Elite skills were the defining skill for a build; but that didn’t always mean that they were “better” than any other skill. It’s elite for the sake of balance.

This is just bad naming. Like so many others said before, it’s NOT meant to make you stronger than without the Specialization.

And 3 + 1 is ridiculous. Who in their right mind would ever run without it then, if you could choose it along with 3 Core-Specializations? They are completely optional and this is how it’s meant to be by Anet.
