OK I have the message to earn my glider basics to continue with the story “Establishing a Foothold”
Great
So Is there an official guideline by the producers to teach us that or are we left to guess?

I have hunted you tube/internet and what I get is everybody making videos that have guys already with wings on running real quick to all kinds of areas then you do the quest here, then you do the quest here, then here and then you can glide ….. jumps off a mountain. Somehow the areas they show are never the areas where I am getting the official message to learn gliding! before I can go on
So I run and jump and fall like a rock and die.

Nobody tells you where you are supposed to get the wings and what you are actually supposed to do from when you have finished the two parts in Heart of Thorns that are before “Establishing a Foothold”.

So I don’t know, must be a lot of good guessers in this game or is that why so many people advised against this game? I always enjoyed it and now came back after I was stuck for a long time with the Dark Soul games.

So yes, so advice would be great if somebody knows whether the producers actually took the time to write some instructions/guide or if somebody seriously made a you tube to teach ( and not talks with a bored rapid voice to just get internet points up)

You just have to gain some experience to unlock the ability to buy the basic gliding mastery. You already have 1 mastery point from finishing the first part of the story, and it only takes about 256 thousand experience to unlock. Its not that hard, but it is definitely the most annoying mastery to unlock imo because gliding makes getting around the new maps so much easier.

That said, if you aren’t a huge lore person, start LWS3 story (from the story journal) before the HoT story. The LWS3 maps are much more friendly to getting around without a glider than verdant brink is.

If you have played the dark souls games they give even less information then this game so how cant you find it?
You need to gain exp in verdant brink map by doing what ever.
Then train gliding basic by useing 1 green mastery point under masteries “heart of maguma”

^True, but Ember Bay and Bitterfrost Frontier are easy to gain XP in (compared to Verdant Brink, so many feel), and really require little Gliding.

@OP: When in doubt, the Wiki (accessed via the link above, or in-game by typing /Wiki in chat) provides the answers to many game dilemmas.

Good luck.

Reading the mastery that they show to you helps. It’s written there in the game:

Mastering jungle movement will unlock the ability to hang glide to previously unreachable locations. When you train the Gliding Mastery, you’ll have the option to soar freely through the treetops, escape the dangers that await you on the jungle floor, use the air to your advantage in combat against certain foes, and save yourself from accidental death by slipping.

Admittedly the mastery system itself is confusing at first but you do not need gliding to get one level of xp. Just do the events you can get to and gliding will unlock more.

This exact problem was what put me off HoT. All I had to do was earn a bit of XP to get gliding but I could not follow the zerg, because they could glide and mushroom-jump their way around and most of the mobs were too strong for me alone. I just died and died and died. I ended up finding some tigers and killing them over and over for a tiny bit of XP each time. Tedium squared and not a great start to an exciting new expansion.

The story line is there to offer us a bit of guidance and hand-holding so I thought it was a very lazy piece of design to simply be told “Come back when you have earned gliding”. That story step could have been “Report to Commander XYZ for further training”, providing a set of repeatable tasks for us.

My wife has still not earned gliding. She just avoids the HoT maps completely. I’d be very interested to know how many other HoT-enabled accounts are out there that have not yet earned gliding.

You can actually get to a lot of the jungle floor in VB without gliding. It may be a route that makes you want to put your fist through something (hence why the map was not popular) but it is still doable. There are a bunch of events that take place near the entry point though, so if you do not feel like exploring just stay in that area until you have basic gliding.

The last level of gliding is 12 points. Some people who have it have complained it puts up barriers to travel they would not have without it so I do not worry about ‘only’ having the level before it.

Yes, it’s confusing at first. I just completed Gliding basics, so this is what I recommend.

Go to a vendor that sells gathering equipment and get some orichaculm level stuff. You can get xp from gathering in the HoT zones, but mithril sickles/axes/picks tends to ruin resources.

Most PvE builds are all offense, so switch your build to something with a bit of defense and heals, whatever that means for your toon. Do small changes, like using a different weapon or refreshing your memory on the defensive class mechanics. For Guardian I started using Mace/Focus instead of my leveling Sword/torch. But each class is different, so you may need to do a bit of research.

Go to Verdant Brink. Wander south to the Pact Rally points. Join in their defense. Die a lot until you get the hang of how dangerous the region is. Escort NPCs carrying supplies for the rally points. In general follow other players around as much as possible and help with the events.

Hope this helps.

BF is only 1 of 3 LWS3 maps, and OP said he just came back, which means E3 is the active one right now, which would place him in BF anyway unless he paid for E1 and 2.

When I pass by the areas in VB that a group of us accessed via jumping/revive orbs and teleport to friend the first week HOT was out, I laugh. With gliding and other masteries its so much easier to get to those areas, but at the time, it was 6 lost people going “WTF, is that slime on that rock face…why did I fall???” “Do Events? Nope, let’s explore instead, gotta get elite Spec!”

Memories…anyway, during the initial VB daylight events, there’s the laranthir event chain just down the hill from the starting WP, everything in this chain is accessible without gliding or any other mastery, and this chain will give you the experience you need for basic gliding.

Are people literally complaining that you have to play first 1 (one) hour (sixty minutes) to get enough XP for the basic gliding and mushroom jumping? In the worst case it takes two hours. If you don’t want to work for your character play a Moba or a shooter. (I assume the that’s why those games are so popular now.)

Pretty sure this is a troll. OP never responded to both this thread and another thread he made complaining about getting gliding mastery level 2. If he figured out how to get gliding mastery level 1 there’s absolutely no reason he should be confused about getting level 2.

Not so sure about the troll part. Having seen OP’s posting history, this person seems to be the kind of player who can’t navigate the UI very well or extract the information it readily provides players. To be sure, this is an issue not at all unique to the OP – reading tooltips and other sources of UI information seems to be lost on a huge portion of the playerbase in almost any MMO I’ve played.

But…. it seems OP made a thread after this one complaining about the poison fields around the forts in the Silverwastes meta is killing them before OP can reach the HoT story instance marker at Red Rock. How exactly is this person gliding before doing HoT story?

OP has to be a troll then. Last week he was stuck on the story because he couldn’t navigate VB well enough to earn the gliding mastery (fair enough complaint imo even if he was a bit melodramatic). However, 6 days after that was posted he complains about being stuck in Camp Resolve and can’t even get to VB? Timeline doesn’t add up
