Either way Turethir, well thought out response, thank you for posting these ideas and I hope Anet reads your post.

Thank you (and also a big thanks to Preserver who quoted my post also) – and thank you for your insights, too! I like the idea of a ‘challenge mode’ for Hero Points. Shame there’s no Build Switcher yet, as it would be a lot easier to switch to tankier gear/specs quickly to take on these challenges, if soloing champs is something you like to do!

I really really really want a Build Switcher / saver.

Also; It has come to my attention that there is supposedly a WvW method for unlocking Hero Points. Some recipe for combining WvW rewards gives you a potion that, when consumed, completes one hero point in the new maps. This is not confirmed, but I thought it worth mentioning.

It was announced several days ago as an option at a merchant who sells Hero Points in WvW.

The problem is it requires 200 WvW ranks to complete per character + 7k BoH. Even on a very active EoTM, this will take a very long period of time to do; much longer than doing 100% MC in Tyria and 20 hero point challenges in Maguuma.

Just logged in to toss my two cents out.
The 400 hero point grind for elite specs is pretty ridiculous.
Having a job,a family, and other priorities means I don’t have a whole lot of time to play now days.
I don’t mind it requiring points to open, but that amount is just insane.Especially considering it will have to be done multiple times if you want to play more than one elite spec.
I simply don’t have the time to mess with that crap, and it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth for the whole expansion, which I was really looking forward to.
Lower the hero point cost….big time.seriously.

Sorry, I don’t see a problem with any of the issues mentioned in previous posts. I read as many as possible before eyeballs started bleeding.

If ANet makes any more changes, there soon will be another thread juxtaposed to this one of posts lamenting about how there’s ‘nothing to do’ after 2-3 weeks of the HoT release, if that.

I leveled my Revenant in literally the time it took to click on 60 tomes and the instant level 20 scroll. ~5 minutes, tops. So now I need to go farm some Hero Points to flesh out the rest of the elite spec; maybe ~10-15 hours of game time if I focus on it.

The brand new class, maxed out, casually, in less than 10-15 hours.

Way too trivial imo and I somewhat wish I never had any of the tomes to begin with. I can’t even imagine what this OP would be like if some poor soul, with a real life job no less, had to level a brand new class from 1 to 80, in a brand new expansion, with no easy mode leveling ‘tomes’…THE HORROR.

The issues I picked up on in this thread:

- Skills becoming available as you level up has been around for quite some time now. And although I admit when it was first released I didn’t much care for it, I like it now. Having all skills available after you hit a mob a few times seemed kind of silly.

-The Masteries are account bound, learn them once and all characters have access to them seems a bit, again, trivial to even a casual like me. But to each their own I guess.

-The story is fine for me, even before the recent change. Changing the terminology means nothing, ‘Gating’ will always be prevalent in digital gaming. PERIOD. GW2 had no grind or was completely an ‘open world’ previous to HoT? Really?

All games are about time invested; the vast majority of people in this post want their stuff NOW, or else they’ll demand a refund. Very interesting to me, but in a sad way.

My post is in support of ANet to counter some of these ‘interesting’ game-refunding claims, and to ask them to please not cave in too much. This coming from a loyal customer who has played since beta and spent hundreds of dollars on GW2. Others need not respond as I care very little as what you have to say and honestly wish ANet would eliminate these type of open forums in favor of a more concerted effort of personal customer support using email only. Leave these type of opinionated forums to the Fan-Based websites; PLEASE. The actual game related forums are fine, but even those get tiresome when not on topic.

I’ve mostly focused on earning hero points on my new Rev and 10ish hours in and I’m 1/4 of the way through the Elite spec. If you farmed EoTM it’ll take you 30-40 hours of good gameplay to earn the HP.

10-15 hours to earn it if I focussed would have been nice, but that isn’t the case.

My first few days of HoT, went as follows:

Tried to unlock pack mastery (with my 20k aps) only to find I had to grind my little kitten off in OLD Tyria to get auto loot. Tried the labyrinth and was informed it was bugged and thus gave no XPs for the tyria line.

Decided to try unlocking as much of my elite as I could, and then noticed I cannot unlock much more that the weapon. More would require me to do the jungle, and thus defeats the purpose of trying to get auto loot unlocked.

Went back to SW with a birthday booster on with my old build I have played for over 2 years now and spent all day farming XP’s.

Maybe in a few days I will tell you what I think of expansion, till then I’ll be

LFG SW 50% 4/4.

This is one of the most close minded posts I have ever seen: “Sorry, I don’t see a problem with any of the issues mentioned in previous posts. I read as many as possible before eyeballs started bleeding.”
How do you not see a single problem other players are facing, are you blind or is your reading comprehension minimal?
-Many of the problems stem from WVW and PVP players essentially having to either go to the PVE zone to unlock their elite specs, OR K-train in Eotm for them, which takes an absurd amount of time. And to do that on upwards of 8+ characters!? Where is the logic in that. The masteries should be the progression for you mainly open world PVERs, but please allow other game modes reasonable ways to achieve the elite specs.

-I have been content with being 80 and having my specs unlocked for ages, without complaining once about “no end game content.” So what on earth makes you think players like me are suddenly going to complain that there is no end game, I want a different way to play, and quite frankly I want it sooner than later because I have played old builds for ages and it would be refreshing to play something new rather than grind grind grind in a ktrain (because the new pve zone is absolutely toxic and frustrating to me) to unlock the specs for the modes I enjoy, wvw, fractals, dungeons, pvp (I know its already unlocked there, but we pvpers do occasionally play other game modes contrary to popular belief.)

You should actually do this before coming to post about how simple it will be. I know I’ve been playing since HoT came out and I have unlocked my minor. That’s it.

Before more people keep on defending Anet, Gaile included, lets keep in mind it is the same crew that though unlocking level 36 adept skills behind killing a level 50 champ was a-ok. Or at 36 go complete a level 45 map exploration.

Considering how brutally out of touch devs can, and have shown to, be, maybe accepting the en masse complaint would be better than say ’it’s fine, the expansion has only just come out’.

It’s not like we don’t have the personal story + the masteries + exploring the whole maps + building guild halls to keep us busy.

I’m not going to bash anyone’s opinion or am I going to bash HoT, I will say that Elite Specs should not have been locked in the first place.

I didn’t research much of HoT, I wanted a lot of it to be a surprise, and that’s my fault.
I used tomes and such to level 4 professions , I did this so that I could play the new specs.

While I don’t want to rush through the content, I certainly don’t want to grind days just for points.

There has to be some alternative to this.

A few are, yes. In the jungle there are a few that are gated, a few that are behind champions that are tough to kill solo/with a friend.

But there are other hero points that are easier to get or can be awarded through WvW but it takes longer than many feel is comfortable for it.

I don’t understand the 400 HP claim either, it’s a false question, the new hero challenges will reward you with 10 HP, which means you only need to do 40 Challenges, which isn’t that much either.

And this is assuming that you didn’t have any points to spare. cause if you did you can only do as few as 20 Hero Challenges to master the elite.

That is enough to feel like a reaper and enjoy playing it. You absolutely don’t need 400 HP to enjoy playing a reaper.

You might want to consider changing the word, “you,” to, “I,” as you cannot really speak for what someone else enjoys.

When you make your character he doesn’t pop out level 80 with all skills, he is sub-optimal.

Then you progress in the game to build your character.

Expansion is no different.

Hope this helps.

When you first create a character he is level one in a level one area facing level one foes. Training an elite spec means playing your character at essentially sub level 80 while in a post 80 zone facing post 80 opponents. Its not progressing your character, its regressing him and then working your way back up to where you were before.

40 jungle challenges is doing every challenge on all 4 maps, some can’t be done without levelling masteries or unless you have a big enough group/there are people nearby on the map.

The process of finding where to go for the challenges, being able to do the ones gated and being able to kill the enemies takes a fair chunk of time.

Let’s look at the package we are paying for here. PvE-wise.

Raid(s)
Endgame for the most dedicated and skilled.
It is what was advertised as far as I know.

Mastery System
Endgame grind for your account rather than your characters.
More or less what was advertised.

Elite Specialisations
Big end game grind to unlock basic mechanics? It wasn’t advertised this way nor was it really needed to be a big grind.

The Heart of Maguuma
New zone where you have to farm by doing all the old stuff before you can do any new stuff.

The one thing I’d like people to think about is: “What are new things I am getting when I buy HoT? What cool new toys I have?” The fact is that you get very little in the first place and then most features require heavy grind or are geared towards top players.

There is little to no reason to gate the specs. I don’t see why an opportunity to use new, but essentially base mechanics, should be seen as any sort of accomplishment. We are not talking about wanting things that really are a sign of your investment into the game – gold or materials collected, ascended armor or legendary weapons equipped, skins or achievements unlocked. We are talking about the ability to swing your weapon.

Locking the elite specialisations behind a quite stupid amount of HPs is absolutely stupid.

The elite specialisations were a major selling point of the expansion, and hyped to hell by Anet. To have people come in and want to try them, and see they are locked behind an absurdly large grind for such a feature, is just going to put people off.

You have endgame grind in masteries (which are double gated as it is) and you dont need it with core class features such as elites which change how you can play a class.

I cant think of a way that Anet could have destroyed enthusiasm for the expansion more than this absurd decision.

With three core specs active you have more traits active than when you initially begin training an elite spec. I didn’t say that it wasn’t the player’s choice to equip the elite spec line, but he is, by definition, choosing to regress his power level. Six traits is greater than one, or two, or three, etc. Eventually he will restore his power level by reaching a point where the entire elite spec is unlocked and his total number of active traits is where it was before. At that point he even has increased potential variety…but he had to regress his character first.

I don’t understand the 400 HP claim either, it’s a false question, the new hero challenges will reward you with 10 HP, which means you only need to do 40 Challenges, which isn’t that much either.

This, but it’s more than just the time involved. Requiring a group to complete challenges for skill progression is just bad design. It’s already getting difficult to find people to help with killing the champs at the hero points. Just last night, I was attempting one, and another player happened along. I asked him/her for help, and the reply I got was, “Sorry, already done it.”

So to all the people who say it’s “just fine,” sorry, it isn’t. Not everyone had the chance to ride the zerg wave and complete all those challenges.

Honestly, I am enjoying the game a lot…..apart from the 400 hero point requirement.
The character I am most excited about elite specing doesn’t even have Tyria 100%ed and while I am perfectly fine with the story, raids, cosmetics or literally anything else being time gated, the reason
I wouldn’t have minded is because I would be doing it with a class I enjoyed and was looking forward to.

Because of this change I literally haven’t played the new map since I want to play that map with my elite spec so im just grinding wvw (which I usually enjoy but now playing simply to get those tokens….and is taking forever =/)

Please anet, find a way to make elite specs available before we play magumma

Hero points are going to be my bane. I normally like to take my time to learn a new spec or set of skills, but if half a loaf is all I get? How am I going to do that if I need a group just to get 10 hero points at a time when I need 200+?

Granted I belong to a large guild but I hate to keep pestering folks for help when they have already gone past where I am and moved on to getting ready for the Guild Hall run. I can’t even compete with them on that since I am nowhere near capable with half a loaf of skills or masteries.

Gliding? Bouncing? I am the original clutz…every time I try to jump I fall on my face. I’ve got 1/2 of the gliding skill learned…but, using it lands me on the bottom of the gorge dead….could not find any updrafts to even help myself with this new skill.

I feel totally left out on this because of the horrible gating (time and difficulties not withstanding).

I like the new conent. Masteries seems like a fun concept and the maps are super pretty and fun to explore.

BUT

With that being said, I feel like I would be enjoying the content a lot more if I didn’t feel the pressure to unlock my elite spec. Elite specs were what I was looking forward to most in this expansion, and because of that I feel like I have to rush through all the new content I could have been enjoying at my own pace because I want it so badly. That’s my one negative about this expansion-by keeping elite specs locked through so many hero points, I can’t explore and enjoy things at my own place because I’m so pressured to rush and get it. It’s really a shame.

I was running around auric basin with friends to find a hero point at that new city and when we had to basically run around and explore the place to find it I thought “Wow, this place is beautiful and I can’t wait to explore it further.”

I wish I could think that throughout my entire time in the new area. Instead, all I can think about in the back of my head is CHONOMANCER CHRONOMANCER CHRONOMANCER QQ NAO. I just feel like all the new content in HoT would be much more fun for me if I didn’t have to worry about it, and I think some people might feel the same.

This is not a threat of permanent quitting, simply what I’m doing right now.

I’ve been exited about this expansion ever since the first video was released regarding elite specs. For me it was finally an opportunity to spice things up and get some new abilities and ways of playing. I was one of the first to pre-purchase HoT. I bought the $100 one because I believed that strongly that this was going to be a truly awesome gaming experience based on what they said it would be and my own experiences already playing the game.

Now a couple days into the release and I’ve never been this frustrated with a game as I am with this one (system that denies our basic new specs until most content is exhausted).

A previous post of mine explains my reasoning for why I’ve now decided that for the time being I simply can’t play a game I love….only 2 days after expansion release.
————————————————————————————

We were all led to assume from when videos were first released about elites that it was a core enticement to buy the game. Who could have imagined this nutty elite gate which makes you play through the content of hot b4 you can unlock the elite for Hot.

In betas we were given immediate access to elites and no access to test the hero point system.

We weren’t told how hero points would work until only few days before and even then most were expecting something close to what we already had. Not walls within walls.

The lack of information on this essential selling point of the game was withheld and now many many people are feeling betrayed , and that this isn’t what they thought they were buying.

As many of you have seen, very many people right now are pretty kittened about the amount of HP required to unlock elite specs, and rightfully so. This is indeed an incredulous number that anet really just poofed into the game for no/terrible reasons and then tried to justify it.
The main focus of this is to the people who say “look at all these whiners that want everything unlocked on day one, play the game nerds” ect ect ect…
No, we do not want everything unlocked on day one. We want unlocking things to be fun, and involve actual content. the current system of masteries gating hero points gating elite specs is all about repetetive grinding, which is no fun
I think I speak for all of the angry people when I say that I don’t care if it’s not a day one unlock. I care about the means of unlocking. I think everybody can agree that elite specs would be much more enjoyable to unlock if instead of grinding HP, it unlocked as you progressed through the HoT story. I would MUCH rather unlock my elite through 30 hours of engaging story content that was interesting, than 20 hours of mind numbing, head bashing grinding.
We do not want day one unlocks, we want content, and fun ways of unlocking content.

I think it’s overblown to claim that you’re being asked to stump up 400 hero points simply to play the game, even if you’re primarily in a PvP environment. And I don’t think they should be a day-one unlock.

Otherwise, though, they really do need to come up with a better way to handle hero points for WvWers and more ways to get hero points. There’s a 2600-post thread on the subject that’s been merged into a giant megathread for the express purpose of easy reading. It’s up to you what you want to do in the meantime, but there’s a good chance that this will be changed.

The ways to fix both HoT mastery grinding and HP problems in one fell swoop from me here.

Make it so you can level the HoT masteries while in the non-HoT areas. There, we’ve fixed the problem because we can go back to doing anything in open world to level them up, simply because we have more maps to use.

For the HP problem, drop the cost of Elite specializations to 325 and change all Hero Challenge group events to regular events that scale up depending on how many players are there. We’ve just fixed the problems with the system.

Reduce Hero points to 60 for maxing elite specs. You will be forced to do it anyway – the same way you did with sPvP ranks. All you are now gathering in these merged thread is feedback about how poorly implemented concept it is.

I have a serious question though. Why ANET feels it is cool to design a game that simply revolves around the idea of a “train” – be it karma train or xp train? On top of that now one can’t even explore the map in peace and enjoy the scenery that you took a lot of time to draw up and implement. Mobs respawn faster than troll threads. Gotta keep moving with the train or get screwed, kitten scenery.

In summary, reduce hero points requirement to 60 (max), reduce mob respawn rate, do away with stupid mastery levels, let people enjoy the game that you kittening built for people to play and enjoy instead of running circles in a choo choo train.

“If there is anyone here whom I have not offended, I am sorry.”

It occured to me that this is almost exactly what Bungie did with Destiny. That game’s content was far from being even acceptable in its variety and volume, so their had to employ some really, really bad and antiquated systems to stretch the grind out.

People are so kitten spoiled can’t see the kitten forest through the trees.

This game is a lot of fun….chill out, sit back, and enjoy it for what it is, not for what you want it to be.

Was that on an existing character with map completion? Cause starting a new character (like the Rev) is a chore.

I’m playing a reaper myself and all you need is 60 HP to unlock the elite specialization (you get an exotic greatsword plus the associated skin) and another 15 HP to unlock the first minor trait that allows you to go into reaper shroud. That means a total of 75 HP gives you 10 new abilities to play with.

That is enough to feel like a reaper and enjoy playing it. You absolutely don’t need 400 HP to enjoy playing a reaper. Sure, you won’t be the most effective reaper possible due to lack of reaper-traits and utility skills but at least you get a sense of progression once you unlock everything else step by step

Also I suggest trying to change your own behaviour instead of asking arenanet to cater to your self-imposed restrictions (“I don’t want to do PVE content”)

good luck & have fun

So one of your three trait lines has 1 minor trait unlocked? You are gimping yourself something fierce right there. And ANet’s stated mission at the beginning was to create a “play as you want” experience. For some that means avoiding PvE like the plague.

I bought the expansion for the revenant, the guild hall and the specializations. I expected fully to have a massive grind for the masteries, but since we can level them up by doing things we like i wasn’t bothered by it. I fully expect to take me 5+ monthe to get a legendary weapon (if i get it at all). I was expecting the map to be a mess (and something close to hell for me since i’m pretty bad at jumping puzzles). There’s more than enough time gating in HoT.
However i was fully expecting to be able to enjoy HoT in the new specialization, i was not expecting an abomination like i’m seeing ingame. 400 heropoints for specializations, who thought that up? who in their right mind considers this absurd amount in unlocking specializations? This just sucks any enjoyment in playing the game, it’s absolutely ridiculous.

I first feared 400 is to huge for me as WvW focused player.
But i am not shure annymore. 10 Points per WvW hour, about 100 were left from about 50% map completion and you can get a bit from PvE. I just don´t want to be forced into jumping puzzles and to often repeatet PvE content but playing the story once + some exploration wit hthe glider is nice and OK. Taking all together its not instant Elite, but i guess not to long too.
I will see how it works out. Its to early for the full picture. Its basically good not to hand off elites like halloween candies. Its important that the players feel its not to far for their main character. There Anet shocked the community .. but as said i am not shure if its realy so huge. At least for the first elite.

agreed.

Feels like Anet giving us a collecking kick in the balls, hyping up elite specialisations, then locking them behind a massive grind.

The absolutely worst decision they could have made on this matter.

Did they learn nothing from the trait lock debacle they did last year…..
