I first feared 400 is to huge for me as WvW focused player.
But i am not shure annymore. 10 Points per WvW hour, about 100 were left from about 50% map completion and you can get a bit from PvE. I just don´t want to be forced into jumping puzzles and to often repeatet PvE content but playing the story once + some exploration wit hthe glider is nice and OK. Taking all together its not instant Elite, but i guess not to long too.
Doing it entirely in WvW (which should be possible) would take 40 hours on a new character, that seems like way too long for one elite spec. If you want multiple elites you could be facing hundreds of hours of farming points if it stays as is.

This thread is getting long, I’m hoping they reach a decision either way before we reach 3k posts.

When I bought Guild wars 2 I bought it for ONE reason, to play all the classes and when I first logged on I realised all my profession traits were gated behind a stupid leveling system!
Imagine my dismay when I couldn’t unlock any of my skills until I reached level 40, 60 and 80.
Note the sarcasm*

And at level 80 you have all three spec lines fully maxed out…
…Unless one of them is an elite spec at which point you are effectively sub level 80 while playing in a post 80 zone vs post 80 opposition.

Was the sarcasm really called for? By the time you levelled to 80 (even with tomes) you got all of the hero points needed to unlock every trait and utility from the level up chests. Quite different from having to do hero challenges or levelling up in WvW.

agreed.
Feels like Anet giving us a collecking kick in the balls, hyping up elite specialisations, then locking them behind a massive grind.
The absolutely worst decision they could have made on this matter.
Did they learn nothing from the trait lock debacle they did last year…..
agreed^
I dont quite understand Anet’s design philosophy :/
why do they like to hide the fun stuffs behind grind.
I don’t mind having grind for the Jungle masteries but still, they can at least consider letting Tyrian Mastery to be available for the already 80s so there’s a bit of perks to hit 80 and able to own that pact cmdr abilities (we alrdy defeated zhaitan so long ago) and if we are bored of grinding in the jungle, we have precursor crafting or fractals to digress… but nope, everything is locked away ~____~
abt elite spec, I felt that it can be designed better, i.e. completing story or running around the Jungle doing specific events to unlock the traits, stuffs like that ~

i don’t have problems with the elite specs but they way to get them are way to long
gw2 is for people who want to play without enormous time investment
this goes directly against the non grind nature off the game making us grind for days for one spec so pls ether nerf the amount required or change all champs to vets

I think it’s overblown to claim that you’re being asked to stump up 400 hero points simply to play the game
Agreed, it’s actually 325 to get your first grandmaster trait. 9 active traits = 9 active traits.
That said, it’s still ridiculous.

We have one more tool which to express our displeasure with the specialization grind this time.
Go to the metacritic site and give HoT a low score.
Metacritic scores are becoming increasingly important in the gaming industry, with several companies tying bonuses and etc to a good score. By telling ArenaNet very publicly about how the current system doesn’t work, we can be heard.

I think that’s a little extreme to do before the devs have replied with their plans on whether they’ll change things or not, especially 3 days after the expansions release. The devs need a little time to discuss things and do some tweaking after looking at the feedback in the forums.

Elite Specializations.
I was so looking forward to logging in on launch, to build my reaper in WvW only to find that the whole profession line is locked behind a massive wall.
I don’t do PVE content, even though i have tried it to see if the whole hero point acquisition was any more bearable, it wasn’t.400 hero points to actually play the game, Especially when your “proof of heroics” are RNG (i got 2 from one rank up, seriously?) , is completely ridiculous.
Atleast one of these things needs to happen.
1. Up the drops for proof of heroics and make them a staple amount rather than random, so we know when we’ll actually be able to play elite specs.
2. Lower the amount of hero points needed.
3. Reintroduce world xp consumables to laurel and/or badge vendors.
You shouldn’t expect to be fully evolved just after launch. Masteries are equivalent to other games leveling up for an expansion. They said its their new system of “progression”. You wouldn’t play wow or another mmo and expect to compete at top pvp without leveling first. Same logic.

No reason to get nasty. Hero points are really the only thing that I think is screwed up. I’m going stick with lobbying for now. Let’s hope anet fixes this almost as fast as they fixed perma-quickness rangers.

Well, this doesn’t mean that they intentionally didn’t decide to gate everything behind a huge grind-xp wall, and the fact that they didn’t mention at all the fact that elite specs would require 400 Hero Points.
It’s like the no character slots fiasco when pre-purchase was available, I’d fire the guys in charge of these decisions, they clearly have no clue whatsoever.
If instead it’s the CEO taking these decisions… well, gg I guess.
So, a review there is useful even in order to tell other people how much Anet cared about players with this profoundly stupid and shady behaviour (it’s stupid not to expect this amount of complaints regarding the elite specs).

Agreed. It’s not like giving them a low rating is going to get them to fix it faster, anyway. They are a company, not a single person who can be intimidated. There are procedures they have to go through and investors they have to answer to.
Unfortunately, procedure is probably the biggest thing in the way right now. That and the fact that it’s the weekend, though knowing how game companies work, a lot of them are probably working overtime right now.

I’m annoyed, too. But this could be a case of them just severely misjudging how hard it would be to unlock, but potentially ruining a games online score based on the first weekend of a release is a bit harsh. Anet could (should) change things and address the complaints, but the likelyhood of people changing or deleting their negative reviews after the issues have been rectified is low.

Masteries =/= specialisations.
Most people are fine with masteries being the end game thing to work towards but the elite specialisations take an age to unlock fully.

Do you get all new skills in wow when there is a new expansion? No, you level and at 91 you get a new skill, 92 another etc. This is the same, except no stupid inflation of dmg numbers, no old content being invalidated. It is BRIALLIANT, once you stop and think about it.

I played an hour of WoW once, didn’t like it.
That said, not many people are asking to get everything with no effort, the main ask is for the requirement or acquisition of hero points to be altered to be more achievable within a reasonable time.

To me, the problem is not one of principle, but one of severity. Let’s face it, if it was only 100 – 150 points, nobody would be complaining that much about it.
What gripes me is that when all this started happening, Colin throws up chafe saying, “Oh, but it only costs 60 HP to buy into the elite spec”, and, “Oh, but you get 10 points per challenge, so you only need to do 40 challenges”.
Yes it’s true, you only need 60 points to wield the weapon and be called the name, but he doesn’t tell you that you need at least another 15 points just to get the base minor trait that actually supports your new class? Is daredevil viable without the endurance boost? Is tempest viable or fun without the F1-overloads? Are you a necromancer without reaper shroud?
I feel like I bought a sandwich, and I’m getting charged for two slices of bread (truly a degenerate sandwich), and now I have to pay extra just to put something in it. I understand my tempest not getting access to shouts (utility skills) right away, but paying in, and not even getting the F1 skills, what makes you a tempest, is silly.
None of the other specializations work that way – your first points into the line buy your base skill. This is why on the elite spec, it has ANOTHER little polygon, this one with a warhorn, or whatever, inside. You’re paying 60HP just to wield a warhorn/greatsword/torch/whatever.
That’s silly, and is probably the least expected thing.
Similarly, 40 challenges is one thing, 40 challenges covering most of the maps, and blocked by multiple mastery gates, is another thing entirely. I saw a ton of people this weekend running all over the old world, just to pick up HPs. If that doesn’t demonstrate something is wrong with the numbers, nothing will.

The common denominator is not “I don’t want to play to unlock this,” its “I don’t want to grind masteries for 20+ hours and burn through new PvE content to enjoy the rest of the game with new elite specs,” such as dungeons, fractals, wvw, etc.
Only because playing the content has somehow become ‘grind’. I’ve spent my time taking part in events, earning rewards and my masteries level as a result. Is that not how it’s meant to work? If I was going to get everything maxed as soon as the game went live, or in the 20+ hours quoted, I’d have seen it as an epic waste of money as imo a game is there to be played over a long period of time. I don’t care that I’ve not maxed my Reaper traits and all masteries in one day, means there’s more stuff for me to do tomorrow. No one’s putting a gun to anyone’s head and saying ‘sit there for however long it takes and don’t move until these things are maxed’. If you’re bored of working on traits, do some Halloween, do some fractals, do some WvW. It’s not like there’s a shortage of stuff to do in game (or out of it and trust me, there is an outside world!).
World completion the first time? Sure you can call it “play the game” to get the experience. Forcing it to apply to all the alts you have in order to unlock elite spec? Yes, that’s forcing us to “grind” instead of “enjoy” the game.

I disagree – it’s first and foremost a product, and we’re first and foremost consumers. The idea that we’re a community of equals or that deliberating something will ‘force’ or ‘encourage’ change is naive.
The only way to vote in this situation is with our feet. In this case, a bad metacritic score is reasonable. If only I could, metacritic appears to be down. Is it because of a swarm of angry users?

Do you?
Between the levels of 90 and 100 (i.e. the new expansion levels), I got exactly one new skill, none of which were playstyle defining, though, I was a rogue.
Pretty much the only equivalent to this were warriors and hunters, whose protection DPS (Warriors), or petless option (Hunters) were locked behind level 100 talents, and having leveled a hunter as well, it absolutely sucked to be stuck with a pet for 50 hours when I picked hunter in order to play an archer like the night elf basic unit.
Typically, such thematic changes are built into the spec itself and unlocked within an hour of making the character, and very rarely are they thematic shifts on the level of the elite specialisations. i.e. You don’t have to level to 100 as a marksmanship hunter in order to unlock holy paladin.
Incidentally, that’s actually the reason that I stopped playing DDO, the game became balanced around true reincarnated characters, and they had a weird thing in which in order to be an offensive cleric and not have your spells resisted by high end enemies you’d have to level to 20… as a wizard.

Mastery system = character progression (Really like this system)
Elite specialization = different playstyle for the profession….. not more powerful(not really elite at all) Why the enormous cost? Please change this Anet These elite traitlines and utilities should cost the same as regular traitlines and utilities

The thing I don’t like is, Colin’s big defense was that it’d only cost 60 HP to get into the elite spec, and at worst, 40 hero challenges to get fully loaded.
The 60 HP is to just to let you handle the new weapon and get the new weapon skills. You arguably need an extra 15, as one other poster said, just to get what I would consider a baseline reaper, tempest, etc. I mean, seriously – what’s a tempest without the F1 overloads? An elementalist with a warhorn.
40 challenges spread out across most of the maps, with mastery gates in between them – that’s a little disingenuous.

With any other MMO on the market, when a new expansion is released you have to spend many hours leveling through the new zones in order to gain access to your classes’ new abilities.
It’s the same kitten thing, except leveling has been subbed out for hero challenges.
Why people take such issue with having to do a bit of content in the new zones to finish unlocking their elite spec is beyond me.

I’m taking time away, since the game is more frustrating than fun. The meta critic score is only 5.6 out of 10 at the moment, so I don’t think ANET needs more downvoting. If they don’t have an idea of how badly HoT has been received, they’re willfully ignorant.
I’m expecting more silence until they’ve had meetings and set a plan to fix this mess.
If we don’t hear anything from them by early in the week, it’s time to find a new game.
But I’m pretty sure they know a lot of people are unhappy.

Why people take such issue with having to do a bit of content in the new zones to finish unlocking their elite spec is beyond me.
Since when does GW2 require players to grind for hours just to be able to access a new way to play? I thought it was all about options – with gold, skins, achievements, legendary gear being the long term goal. Not the base mechanics themselves. It’s comparable to grinding a whole new profession. Elite specs are essentially new professions, I don’t know why people allowed themselves to be tricked into thinking otherwise.

It is possible GW2 is meant to be a grindfest now. It is possible they no longer care about casual players.
Time will tell.

I am so frustrated by this kitten expansion!!!! All I want to do is play my effing elite spec that was hyped for MONTHS!! Since the initial announcement of the stupid expansion they’ve been hyping it, remember they announced the Druid at PAX South? I do, because I WAS THERE! I won tickets from ArenaNet, even.
Like the hero points are not only gated by masteries, they’re also gated by world events i.e. Dragon Stand.

People can change their scores later, if ArenaNet actually fixes those issues.
Besides, companies usually worry more about the critics’ score than the user score. And the “official” critics for MMORPGs give everything the same score, just look how Wildstar, a massive and complete failure, got almost the same score as FF: A Realm Reborn, which is one of the most successful modern MMORPGs.
Using Metacritic to complain about the grindfest with the specializations is a nice, temporary way of pressuring ArenaNet into changing it. It’s better for everyone involved than just asking for a refund, too.

The thing is Anet, players will always find a way. When you create something that a large chunk of your playerbase find distasteful, they’ll always find the optimal way to grind it out even if it isn’t what devs imagined how players would play their content.
Right now due to the elite spec grind, WvW players are coming together, all 3 servers agreeing to do nothing but ktrain for the next week just so people could unlock their elite specs. WvW players have voiced strongly against grinding PvE, and hundreds of WvW ranks aren’t exactly easy to achieve without full on ktraining. So instead of playing the new beautifully designed desert borderlands, people are forced to ktrain just so they have a chance at unlocking and playing their elite specs.
Due to the Masteries grind, people are grinding CoF1 to gain exceptional Central Tyria mastery points. The exp is so crazy that it renders exping elsewhere pointless for central tyria masteries.
Now my question to you Anet devs, is this how you imagined your players would play the new expansion content? Did you want people in WvW to avoid the new borderlands and do nothing but ktrain for a solid week? What exactly does that accomplish? Why can’t WvW players get to play the elite specs they paid for, why do they have to grind for it while sPvP gets them right away? Did you want people to grind CoF repeatedly for masteries?
Nobody I’ve talked to wanted to do either of the above. They’re boring activities. But people do them because it’ll allow them to enjoy the game better. The sooner WvW players get to unlock elite specs for all their characters, the sooner they can get back to fighting and doing massive world vs world combat. For PvE players, the Masteries grind probably wouldn’t be as bad if the exp rewards from doing bosses & events scale better to the amount of exp required to level up Masteries.

Elites were the aspect of HoT that I was most excited for. I like taking my time with mapping and doing story stuff, especially with Halloween here for a short time and my preferences towards Fractals. I play all nine of my classes and I’ve really been enjoying Revenant. For the most part I’ve enjoyed the new stuff. But having to do each Hero Point in HoT at least 20 times (depending on how much I’ve mapped on each character) on NINE characters has cast a dark shadow of frustration on my ability to swallow the nerf to dungeon running and cost to buy the expansion. For the last 3 days I’ve just been doing the first steps for Finite Result, some Halloween stuff, and I used a Teleport to Friend to unlock Gilded Hollow with my guild. Why? Because I feel utterly terrified of getting into a grind for specializations. I hate feeling like I’m built incomplete so I’m likely not even to use specializations until they’re fully unlocked. Outside of PvP, the specializations don’t even exists yet besides a few I’ve seen doing Fractals and a handful I’ve noticed in the labyrinth.
Change it. Please change it.

so fazit after the first weekend, i pretty much blocked it for HoT cause i was excited about the expansion. i played around 20 hours and planned to unlock the tempest for my main and maybe start working on either scrapper or chronomancer.
boy was i wrong. I am now at mastery lvl 5 with gliding I,II, shroom jumping and exalted I. I cant continue the story until i grind out another mastery but was only able to get about 1/3 lvl in 2 hours in the new maps cause i was not able to find any populated events.
For heropoints i managed to unlock only the first 4-5 skills of tempest even though i focused mainly on the hero challenges and sought out any one i could find on the first 3 maps.
Well, tbh this sucks this week i will maybe have ~8 hours of time i can play this game, but i dont really feel like it because this will get me nowwhere.
On top of that i am enjoying wvw the most and that is a ghosttown with everyone grinding pve for the specs.
The new wvw map is a fail too because its just too big and twisted. it might be fun with with 150+ people from every side on it but thats just not gonna happen with the current population.

I’m sad I bought into the hype last minute and bought the expansion. I’ve been playing most of my free time, and after running around Auric Basin, unable to really get anywhere because I don’t have millions of experience to get around, I’m just giving up for now. I just keep asking myself “to what end?” I don’t think I’m going to want to play after this massive grind in seemingly empty zones. It’s just not worth it and doesn’t feel rewarding, at all.

I looked a moment ago at that Metacritic link and the current score has dropped to 3.9. That’s pretty sad because for years I felt that GW2 was the best MMO available as it had so much available without the typical grind.

We need to keep filling this topic and let Anet know this just will not do… For Alt-o-holics (which I’m sure a lot of us are) this is just kittened. The amount of mapping we need to do even on characters we barely ever play (but do want the elite spec for) is crazy. I don’t mind things being gated behind masteries and ofc we shouldn’t just be handed the elite spec, but the play time required on all my alts for it just seems to much.
Maybe they should add an item to the gemstore at a reasonably affordable price to unlock the skill points (the item is already in game for WvW, shouldn’t be too hard)?
Or maybe they should make the Hero Points Accountbound, making the massive grind a one-time thing?

Harder content for those who like it is fine, but don’t gate the Elite Specs behind it!
GW2 is known as THE casual MMO, why mess with the one thing distinguishing it from the rest by implementing grind? Hell not just grind, gated grind…

Do you get all new skills in wow when there is a new expansion? No, you level and at 91 you get a new skill, 92 another etc. This is the same, except no stupid inflation of dmg numbers, no old content being invalidated. It is BRIALLIANT, once you stop and think about it.
I@m not playing wow. I’m playing GW2, and for a reason, it was supposed to be different, not worse.

Glad I found this thread. Avoided pre-purchasing incase of a scenario like this. Only interested in playing with new specs, not interested in grinding out for 4-5 months just to play a different build lmao. Will buy once this is fixed.

Glad at least one got away unscathed and has been saved. Good luck on your life’s path, brother/sister!

If I had known that I’d get Silverwastes x4³ in the end, only even more demotivating I’d have saved my money…
Every Charakter needs to do the same boring stuff if he wants his elite. —> 400pts
You have to grind events for your masteries, which you can only do IN Maguuma, to even advance though the maps if you want 100 percent. Every map ha its own currency you’ll have to grind for stuff just like SW… I don’t like the way GW2 is going. Whoever loved SW – I didn’t even complete the achievements there. I found it boring, like Drytop.
There were days where a JP that you can’t complete only were 10 missing AP… now it may be THE mastery point you’re missing to advance. (at least for Maguuma). Now you’ll HAVE to do content you don’t like while you had the choice to do it or leave it before. The whole system is something I never wanted to see in GW2…
Not to mention the dungeon nerfs.
If that’s the policy for future content, then I’m sorry but I’ll be gone by then.

This has soured all of HOT for me. Sure, there are other things in it but as long as they are associated with this kittied up cat they will never be as enjoyable as they could be.
As many have said, we were sold on “buy this and you get to play the professions ….. whenever we actually release”. Well, we trusted you anet and gave you our money. Then you basically took that trust and said ‘kitten you kittens, thanks for the dough’.
Guess what? Most people in a game came there from another game …

I can see how the next expansion with new specs will be, in order to force you to play the new content it will require a 1000 HPs and the new HPs in that area will give 50 HPs!

Still no response? I went to farm more points for a few hours, too. Devs are active in the forums, this must really be causing them issues.
