In the HoT trailer, you see an engineer with a hammer, who does a smash with it.

I see the Engineer as a character who has ranged options in every build.
That is what I like about that profession.

A hammer however, sounds like melee.

It doesnt have to be. It could have ranged spells on that weapon. Some weapons on other classes, that you would see as more of a melee weapon, have ranged options too.
So what do you think. Will the Elite spec engineer with the hammer, have ranged spells on that weapon too?

Have they released any info, that would give a bit of a picture about what we can expect?

they want you to be able to play the professions diffrently making a all range engineer ( if not useing kits) a melee guy would accomplish that.

It’s not as if the melee engineer would lose access to ranged options: grenade kit, elixir gun, mortar kit, etc.

It’s not a 2 hand mace, its a hammer(withing game rules, not realisticness)

but engineer could use a melee option, or it could be like Rev and have a long range hammer lol

ANet want to change a little some classes making it able to do something that was unable to do before.
Actually the best example is the Dragonhunter, that make the guardian play a full new role. Chronomancer don’t really add a new role but give better support to allies and conditions to enemies. Tempest make the ele able to spam it’s boon all around the world and granting more support to the allies (it already give it with firefield and waterfiald, but that specializzation focus also on auras to give boons to allies). The reaper don’t really add anything to the necromancer… but it’s cool XD And 3/4 of it’s weapons deal ranged damage, making the GS a really good choice to do a melee class that can stay in the mid of a fight dealing AoE damage.

Now you have a class that have All ranged weapons. What’s the easiest way to add something totally new to the class? Add a Melee weapon!

Then, you can stay happy: the hammer will have some ranged attacks, something like the CC skills on guardian and warrior hammer. What about a engi Hammer skill X that crush the hammer on the ground and shoot you with missiles become coming melee to break your a** ?

And at last you can still use all your kits: grenades, mortar, flamethrower, elixirgun, to be shure to have enough ranged options to strike your enemy.

maybe its both…sorta like the revenant spear. Imo that wouldnt be stupid to have
