Decided to buy HoT after all. Played through first two parts of my storyline and am attempting part three, “Establishing a foothold”. Looking around on line, I can see I need to have a dialogue with the “pale reaver”. He should have a green star over his head shouldn’t he? He doesn’t and I cannot progress.

From what I understand, this part unlock gliding. Which I can’t do at this moment.

What am I missing?

Cheers.

Why can’t you unlock gliding? Go do a few events, use some buffs and you’ll have gliding in pretty much no time.

Go to your hero panel, make sure the main screen is on equipment, look to the left tabs, the very bottom one is masteries. Click masteries – click Maguma masteries – click gliding. I believe you get 1 mastery point (green for Maguma) for doing the first chapter of the Maguma story.

If basic gliding is not trained, hit the check mark next to it to train. If the yellow bar for basic gliding is full, apply your green mastery point in the empty circle on the right of basic gliding.

From there you need to train in something else and gather mastery points to spend once the mastery is trained.

Maguma is green, Tyria is red. Throughout your hero panel in achievements you’ll see activities you can do to receive one of these two points to use in the trained masteries. When in the new Maguma maps experience counts for green masteries, anywhere else experience counts towards red masteries.

The pale reaver you need to talk to is right next to that first waypoint (Shipwreck Point) as you come into the zone. It is sort of hard to see him, but he is standing next to the scout that you can talk to for opening up the map. I remember looking around in various places for him the first time.

You need to go to masteries in your hero panel. You need to spend mastery points on gliding. Then you’ll be able to progress.

@Flatley: I was confused by this at first, too…and I, too, had trouble figuring out how to get XP in the zone — I couldn’t see how to get safely past the any foes without gliding and it seemed I needed to do that to get gliding.

Once you do unlock gliding, it gets a lot more fun IMO.

Thanks all – understand now. The bit that escaped me was that I needed to participate in events in order to gain exp. to complete the first glider stage.

I thought HoT was going to be too tough for me but it does seem to be doable – albeit more challenging.

First time in Verdant Brink: “OMG, how do I get anywhere? Why is everything killing me!? I hate this place!”
A week later: “I’ll just run though here, drop down, glide…easy peasy.”
10 days later on entry to Auric Basin: “OMG, how do I get anywhere? Why is everything killing me!? I hate this place!”
A week later: “I’ll just bounce on this mushroom, run though here, drop down, glide…look at that view!” (fusses around getting the perfect screen shot)
