Guild Wars 2

Hi there. I haven’t played GW2 in well over a year way before the expansion came out. So I was checking out the account summary for a price on the expansion. In both the “buy now” and “upgrade” hyperlinks link to the same page to buy the expansion plus the game. Is there really no way to buy just the expansion? Or am I just missing it? I tried googling for the answers but all the forum posts I saw were from months ago and were discussing preordering the game.

The core game is free to play, you are really only buying the expansion.
- a future note, this would be the future as well, so when expansion #2 drops, core +HOT would be free, and you would have to buy the new expansion. (aka. no upgrade option)

Great. I think it’s kind of funny that on the “upgrade” page it still says that you’re buying the expansion plus the core game even though it’s free to play. Well, that sucks but thanks for letting me know…
Seems like a way for the company to charge an inflated price just for an expansion.

It’s there so that new people who don’t have GW2 yet can see that they get the core game in the bundle too, so they aren’t left wondering whether they will still need to buy it seperately.

But it says right on the main page “Guild Wars 2 Play Free Now”…I think saying it comes with the core game is ADDING to the confusion because of the conflicting information.

Perhaps, but the paid Core game is different from the Play4Free game. Thus, those familiar with the Play4Free game would be assured that purchasing Heart of Thorns includes the paid Core game.
