Explain the Mastery system in basic terms
You have to grind XP to level up the mastery you want, then you can use your points to unlock it.

Can someone explain WHERE you have to grind this exp? I assume it’s Silverwastes 2.0 for the Maguma masteries but can you do the Tyria stuff in WvW or do you have to go to Tyrian maps and do PVE stuff all over again to get it?
Yeah I know you have to get the xp, but actually clicking and levelling up the points..Its not very clear or I’m just not getting it.
This is a terrible system. You have to effectively level up THEN use mastery points. It should just be based on mastery points.
Miranda Zero – Ele / Twitch Zero – Mes / Chargrin Soulboom – Engi
Aliera Zero – Guardian / Reaver Zero – Necro
Regretting buying this game. It’s Just an exercise in frustration and is nothing like the core game. Tired of trying to solo events since no one else is doing them. Done for the weekend.

Was confused at first as well, the whole system feels like a rough draft.
The Mastery System (roughly) explained:
Your Mastery Points are located by pressing H and going to the Masteries tab; located at the very bottom of your hero panel.
Masteries are a completely separate system than Hero Points (formerly Skill Points).
Mastery Points are obtained as a sort of ‘prize’ for completing Combat or Puzzle challenges across Maguuma.
Mastery Points may be spent the same as Hero Points (formerly Skill Poiints).
Mastery Points are used to unlock various abilities largely utilitarian ONLY in Heart of Thorns content.
The utilitarian abilities unlocked by these are as follows (5 total major branches):
- Gliding
- Itzel Lore
- Exalted Lore
- Nuhoch Lore
- Central Tyria
Mastery Points are usually found scattered across the maps of Maguuma and acquired by communing with a location like you would for a Hero Point (formerly Skill Point) as you did in old Tyria.
Mastery Points can also be acquired in WvW, but I haven’t had as much an opportunity to do them there that I can talk about it clearly yet.
EXPERIENCE is slightly different than it formerly worked. For EVE Online players leveling Masteries will be entirely familiar. For everyone else, this is probably a new experience for you.
To Level a Mastery a player must select an skill they wish to focus their Experience Points into. You can gain experience by doing Dynamic Events all across Maguuma. They level fairly quickly. Once your level has been completed you must SPEND your Mastery Points to actually acquire it. This is done in case you decide that at this moment it is good to have the thing you leveled up ready, but you don’t actually want that ability right now. Typically, you should be running around with a lot of Mastery Points and just need to level up a bit. In the beginning it tends to go the other way around: you’ll have a lot of things leveled up, but just not enough Mastery Points to do anything.
Hero Points are slightly more complicated now. Some Challenge Areas (for lack of a better term) sometimes affords Hero Points instead.
So that’s it.
