Yeah, I was afraid of this…

The only “problem” with this is that having to choose between Halloween stuff and working on unlocking elite specs is a bit of a bummer.

If you’re sPvPing you don’t have to unlock anything, you’ll have the full specs available without a speck of PvE.

It’s not much of a choice really if you want to do both. HoT will be here literally forever, but this year’s Halloween event will only last two weeks.

Play Mad King Says and everything else to your heart’s content first, I say.

I hope this doesn’t’ turn into another “OMG! You mean I have to play the game! I’m outraged!” thread.

I’m fine with this. Having to do a quest or overcome some sort of challenge to unlock the Elite Spec is what I would expect to happen. After it is unlocked, you can then use hero points to unlock utilities and traits.

I would have liked it if they had the elite specs tied to particular masteries, and you have to level up a certain mastery to unlock a particular Elite Spec. This would be 1000x better than anet just giving everyone everything, because then what would be the point of even playing this game.

I was confused as well. I bought HOT for the elites, not to go play in their new zones just to get to them (I want to hit the zones on my schedule, not somebody elses).

People have been doing hero challenges, and almost nothing else, for weeks now in case the number was higher than what we had on all our characters (this was especially frustrating to us altoholics). We were pretty much told we could play HOT content if we were 80s and there was not a qualifier to that. Everything says the main HOT content is elites —- points of interest, blog posts, BWEs. This means nobody will be playing elites right from day 1?

You can play the HoT content if you are 80 and there is no qualifier for that. Part of the HoT content is working to unlock the elite spec. ANet never once said you would have access to all elites the moment you login on day 1. They never even hinted that would be the case. The only thing they said was that you will need hero points to unlock new utilities and traits. You are going to actually have the play the game, get used to it or find another game that suits you better.

Weird.

I’ll roll with whatever decision they have (even if it means re-playing the same blah mastery quest nine times or more), but Traits 2.0 was supposed to teach a valuable lesson:

Do not lock character-defining build choices behind extensive, unwieldy content gates.

To be more serious, I dont mind having to unlock it. I have 19 toons and 2 accounts, and ill do it on every single one, i just really didnt expect it to be that way. They have been, for the most part, transparent on things coming in HoT so I just didnt see having to unlock it via quests or whatever happening since it was never mentioned or hinted at.
Again, I DONT mind doing whatever needs to be done, I was just hoping to hop into my elites and play the halloween content. ah well

I’ve been prudent with my hero point expenditures specifically so many of my characters can start off running. I won’t mind so much if they’re account-wide unlocks, either.

But, what I prefer might not happen, so I guess all my characters will be storming the gates, soon enough. :P

They said they haven’t shown us all the mastery lines the Hot will have. They could have a Mastery line that unlocks first skills, then traits, then skins. Since its account bound you’d do it once to unlock for all of your chars forever. For this they don’t need to add hero points to Maguuma, just enough Mastery points for everything.

Be careful what you ask for

Then make one.

Over a year ago, my charr thief was badly injured in the Dragonbrand. He survived, but lost a lot of his mobility, and could no longer use his old fighting style. A friend introduced him to a fern hound he’d been training to help him, and the two became fairly inseparable. The former thief adjusted his fighting style and learned to work in tandem with the fern hound, but his injuries still bother him more than he likes to let on. Thus, he’s often forced to stay behind and do research, rather than be on the front lines. That research has led him down some interesting paths, and he’s visited various places to learn more first hand, including the Priory. Nobody that really knows him will be surprised when they see him using a staff and druid magic.

See, backstory. Custom fit to the character, something ANet can’t do. You can do it, though.

IF they do that, it would have to be traits, then skills. Until you unlock that first minor trait, you can’t access the spec. And without that, the skills can’t be used at all, so there’s no point in them being unlocked.

The game needs more side-quests, so I’d prefer if there was something like that for each mastery.
Would be better than just having the specs appear out of nowhere or just be tied to another mastery XP-grind.

I don’t expect that’s going to happen though… Lore and world-building aren’t exactly the games’ strongest points…

The impression we always got from everything that was said were that we would have access to elites. Of course, people will say ‘they did not say we would not have to do xyz to get them’ to which I counter they never said the reverse. The impression was HOT would give us access to them (I forget the exact wording) and for the BWEs we had elites and revenants to play with.

My ideal situation is Elite Spec Masteries, so that you can unlock them once and done. But I suspect it’s a per character thing you have to do in order to unlock them individually.

This has basically always been the case. There was never a situation where you could create a character, tome them to 80 before leaving the starter zone and just be the elite spec.

Of course there is a way to get to 80. For at least the sylvari you can access your bank in the starter zone without even going to the main city (or having the game email you a golem). Since I store my tomes in the bank …

You 100% missed my point. Obviously you can tome to 80, though I’m not certain why you think Sylvari have this power in a unique way. Anyone who has the delux golem banker can do it.

What I was saying is that there was no situation in which doing that would include the ability to just BE the elite spec right then and there. That was never on the table, regardless of what people deluded themselves into believing.

I think we both have misunderstandings here. I was saying without the golem or going into your racial city at least the sylvari (probably asura too, I need to check the map) have crafting stations in the same zone that you start in.

The implication has ALWAYS been we would have access to the elites on day 1. The BWEs and POIs have spent lots of time showing off the elites so there was no reason to think there would be a delay between HOT launch and elites showing up. Read the posts here from before the final countdown blog and you will see that idea being pretty widespread and nobody said ‘umm, maybe we are wrong’. Whether the unlock would be automatic or with an undetermined number of HPs was the only real question.

Yes, every race has crafting stations in the starting zone, but I was talking about the beginning tutorial zone.

That implication was never made. Anyone who thought otherwise was deluding themselves into believing it. They wouldn’t have called them Elite Specs if there wasn’t going to be something you had to do to earn them. The only question there has ever been was whether you could earn them account wide, or if you had to unlock them per character.

You will also note any of those threads having people pointing out that they would not just get to have them. Perhaps you simply dismissed them and moved on, but they’re there.

I should point out that there is not necessarily a difference between having to earn/unlock something and having access to it on day one. If you can unlock it very quickly then you can have access to it on day one. That doesn’t mean you can just create a character and have access though.

If you consider playing the game grinding, then maybe consider quitting .
