Fishing
Nope. I wish people would stop asking
I wish people would ask more. Fishing is great.
You can fish now. Grab a speargun and dive in.
Not good enough.
Honestly, I could see fishing becoming a thing if Ascended Cooking ever becomes a thing. The problem here, of course, is that food buffs are already a nuisance – and, IMO, a mistake. Making them even more important would be a rather unfortunate choice on their part.
Perhaps if the only difference between ascended recipes and regular ones was a Agony Resistance buff….
I love sandbox MMOs and am really happy that model is finally getting a revival after a decade and a half of boring, formulaic Everquest clones.
That being said I don’t want to see these kinds of features added to GW2 – not because I don’t like them (I do), but because adding stuff like that so late into a game’s lifecycle will just introduce too many bugs, feel shoehorned in, and will take development resources away from what GW2 is good at. It’s simply not worth it to add sandbox features into a game that wasn’t designed to be a sandbox, I’d suggest playing ArcheAge or waiting for Black Desert if you absolutely must have these features.
gw2 : runescape
yes gw2 really lacks small things like this to make journey in a beautiful world like gw2 more fun.
its not all about combat, you know.
Fishing feels like a small thing that could make a lot of people happy. Not sure how difficult it would be to implement, but it’s something I hope is on a to-do list somewhere in ANet.
Fishing could be a lot of fun if they did it right. Like make it a sport with a fishing guild
that had weekly contest or a weekend contest with leader boards, rare fish and dailies
would nice. They could add recipes for gear and fishing poles.
I’d like to point out there mention of a lack of water in HoT areas… Seeing that I think it would be a mistake to at it in this expansion
Not saying it would be a bad idea, just not right now. However it would probably be like the current gathering tools. In which case I’d need a fused fishing rod.

You mean… besides the huge lake that is bigger than Divinity’s Reach?
Fishing wouldnt be a big deal, fishing spots and receipies. They could make it like r/l where you have to sit in one spot for hours.

You mean the one that most likely will not be part of the maps included in HoT? This is the first area of HoT: http://imgur.com/wWLdpTX and I’m pretty sure all of HoT’s other maps will be to the south of that.
I have seen fishing implemented well, and I have seen fishing implemented poorly. What I have never seen is fishing implemented excitingly. It is a funish pastime. What this game doesn’t really need is funish pastimes. It needs actually fun, engaging and entertaining things to do. Fishing doesn’t really fulfill that niche.

I do too. It would be nice if we got props boats outfits nets and new cooking recipes etc.
I think fishing could be implemented as a new mastery thing , unrelated to cooking , just for the sport of it. It would increase immersion a bit if done properly , ( fishing in orr with 20 undeads near you is a bit awkward). I can imagine collections and fishing rod skins sold on the tp with gems. Wouldn’t be that bad i guess.
meeeh, dont care
With the current state of actual endgame content in the game I think the developers can spend their time better than this.
Fishing in any game = fishing bots
Just the WvW

UO was the first, EverQuest, WoW… probably a bunch more, ESO…
What made it so great? I guess the same thing that makes real fishing “great.” It is mind numbing and boring. It is something to do when you don’t have clearly defined objectives, and something to do between clearly defined objectives to cool down between them.

Actually that’s false, been fishing for years in WoW never heard or seen a fishing bot once because of how they designed it.
That’s also a false argument against fishing, saying that anything shouldn’t be added to a game just because someone down the road might actually find a way to exploit it is like saying that nothing should ever be added because someone somewhere might exploit it. It’s not a strong argument sorry.
No, we’re not RuneScape.

LOTRO has fishing and it is pointless (unless you cook a lot with fish and most don’t) and boring.
Rift has fishing and it at least gives you more in the way of rewards, like artifacts. So, it’s much less boring than LOTRO’s imo. But it gets boring after awhile, too.
I’m sure there are other games than these. Pretty sure Archeage has fishing, but that game has major, major issues.
I sure hope down the road Anet introduces fishing, the world they built is perfect for it. A world like Tyria I can imagine all kinds of goodies from those depths.
Lore, crafting materials, minis, artifacts, collections, unique skins, monsters from the deep? So many ways they could go about it.

The only thing that really lured me into playing ESO was all the side-activities like fishing and stuff, and then I swiftly aborted the game when I discovered the rest of the game had no real immersion whatsoever…
I’d like to see fishing. shouldn’t be to hard right? fishing rods could have tiers like pickaxes, logging axes and harvesting sickles, and harvest ‘nodes’ that appear as bubbles on the water’s surface
i too think we need alot of non crafting skills so that i can do something with my time in this game other than combat, it would be great to have fishing, or hunting, or construction that lets you build your own player owned hosue…..or herblore where u make anti dragon potions and then go into the new pve/ pvp area to the far north where other players can attack u while u try and fight the king black dra…..wait what were we talking about, but yea FISHING SKILL!

Actually Artificier profession lets you make potions. Though I feel they are underutilized because you really don’t need them for the majority of the game’s content. But they exist!!
Also I’m all for fishing, it was definitely a fun thing to do in WoW, I think a great game includes both high stress activities (ex: combat, fractals, raids etc) and low stress activities (ex: exploring, crafting, gathering etc). By stress here I mean how much you actual brain power and focus you need to do an activity.
GW2 definitely includes both but I feel they could expand on their low stress activities even more and something like fishing is indeed a welcomed addition.
With all that said, they actually do seem to be moving in this direction by the inclusion of Adventures with HoT as they gave an example of the shooting gallery as something that was talked about as a mini-game before the game’s release but never actually implemented.
They could pretty easily have different kinds of rare fish be part of a collection. Different kinds of rods and lures and fishing hats could be obtained through rewards, crafting, drops. They could even introduce special tonics or hold weekly/monthly fishing tourneys to see who catches the biggest fish or something of the like. The possibilities!
Whenever i see these kinds of request it makes me wonder what the big deal is about fishing in a game. How do you see this, sit by a lake and throw our a rod and wait? Why would I even want to do that?
I don’t know 1 game in which you can fight underwater and fish. It doesn’t work together.
As said in a previous post. You can fish every time.
Go underwater and grab the fish yourself.

I’ve seen tons of games, both on and offline that had fishing. I think it can be implemented in a way as to be fun. However, the standard skill and enter when you get a chat message that is implemented in the majority of MMOs probably won’t do here.
The most memorable fishing experience I had was in FFXI, after they changed fishing to make it harder for fishing bots: you had to actually wear the fish/monster you had hooked out before you could catch it. It took some skill to reel a fish in but I don’t think it ever completely stopped the bots… Not to mention you had a rather embarassing change to fish up notorious monsters in certain places… kitten that squid that ruined so many ferry rides for poor level 20s…
The most interesting offline fishing mechanic would be Okami, but obviously, you’re not going to draw a fishing line to a fish in GW2.
There is plenty of other games that implement fishing as a minor activity that lead to certain special things, in the case of GW2, I guess the product other than fish could be collections that lead to better fishing items/unique skins or perhaps fishing up items that unlock a collection that has less to do with fishing and more to do with treasure hunting.
It could be a threshold to adventure for someone that just temporarily didn’t know what to do in the game or was waiting for friends in a town. You don’t necessarily need to go out into dangerous places to fish, it’s a laid back activity you can easily pick up and put down, a pretty powerful tool if done well, even if not all people are going to understand it’s allure.
what is the reason of fishing when you can kill the fish yourself.
i corrected my previous post.
I think it’d be fun.
Could add another layer to the whole ‘explore’ vibe of the game too. Find some obscure oasis on top of a mountain where you can fish some rare tuna. I dunno…
Fishing is less about mechanics or crafting and more about appreciating the world and doing passive calming activities while enjoying the view at least for me.
I’ve been critical of the game I have and I admit that but there’s one thing that I’ve always said and that’s it’s a beautiful world to play in, non-combat activities like farming, housing, fishing allow you to stop and appreciate the world for more than 30 seconds just to get a clip for your youtube channel.
I’d also like to point out that every time this subject comes up it explodes on the front page. There’s alot of people who love this idea.
Hit ‘F’ to catch a fish?
Count me in.

Not that I like fishing in WoW, for reasons I’ve stated more than once, but WoW has both fishing and underwater combat. You can’t fight the fish, you have to stand above the water and equip a fishing pole, preferably at fish pool nodes. But you most definitely can fight underwater in WoW, they even have a whole underwater zone full of things that attack you.
The main problem with fishing is having to hover one hand over the mouse waiting for a random moment when it’s time to hook the fish. Sure that combats bots, but it brings the rest of your game play and socializing to a screeching halt. Getting timed buffs as you do in WoW only makes it worse, because you need to cast as often as you can or you’re wasting your bait. So no taking time to type to your guildies for the five or ten minutes of the buff!
Blech.
This is what I mean by props btw, there’s some sortof like parasols in the background of this video that are close to what I mean by props when I’ve asked for props to be included with fishing. I think it would be awesome if they’d go all out with it complete with outfits etc.
Well I am glad to see I’m not alone in wanting fishing in gw2 it could be great. So I hope
ArenaNet is reading this and taking a good hard look at fishing.
